  • This is one of my favorite lifts to preform

  • jesus christ dude did my eyes mis inform me or did you have 225 on there?

  • @ForceBehindTheThrone : That would be something, but alas, I believe the first plate is a 35 pound bumper and the second is simply a 10 pounder, making the total a not-extremely-whopping 135 for the barbell.

  • @Bodytribe1 w/e dude you still got a solid 60 lbs on me, and thats just doing side press, either i havent taken the time to learn the bent press or dont have the stones for it, im still deciding

  • NICE lifting but on the bent press stop putting your free hand on the floor, place the palm of the free hand on the opposite thigh. In competition that would be a no lift. Plus your not getting any stronger doing that, may i also say that its braking the rules. Feet only on the floor.

  • Its habit, using the hand to search for the kettlebell (whether it is there or not).

  • @oddlift Arthur Saxon too mentions this in his Textbook of Weightlifting and says that by moving your hand to the floor you're changing your balance and setting yourself up to lose control of heavier weights.

  • Hi Chip, this is Gary from the fitness forum, thanks for the link. Great lifts. :-)

  • wish i had the ball to try some of that haha

    but man that was awesome

  • Thank you sir.

  • I watched that whole video hoping he would screw up and knock himself out with that barbell. I'm deeply disapointed.

  • Someday maybe I'll post the bloopers reel. I'm not above getting knocked out if it brings people happiness.

  • Cool, I can't even bench press that anymore.

  • What's amazing about the bent press is that an expert bent presser can lift overhead more with one hand by that method than in a two handed push press

  • Hey what's the name of the song, it's pretty cool

I love old school lifts, I am trying to incorporating them with my routine but only with dumbells, my gym doesn't have the equipment or space required to do them

  • The song is by Sasha, called Rabbitweed, of the Sonic Mutations compilation.

A good heavy bent press with a DB ain't a bad thing, and you'd have more room for it.

  • That's what I am doing at the moment, Turkish Getups with 25 lb dumbell to get the form down turned into a windmill, 1 set of 5 reps per side

  • this is how a buddy of mine broke his wrist i would be very careful when performing these "lifts" impressive btw

  • The Bent Press has become my new movement crush. If only more people knew of the sheer awesomeness of the old time iron man lifts. Awesome video, definitely going on my fav list.

  • Guys, Awesome. Keep up the good work! Nice bent presses at the start.

    Emby

  • Such an amazing feat of unorthodox strength!

  • that is the shit man... how much is that like 210lbs?

  • I wish you put up a weight display.

    Impressive video!

  • 100kg Turkish get ups into Bent Presses? Awesome!

  • not quite 100Kg (I wish), and those are windmills, not bent presses, although the look quite similar.

  • So, if I posted a video of myself trying a right-handed bent press with an empty olympic barbell, would you critique me on my form?

  • yes. anytime.

  • Thanks I've uploaded a new vid of me today doing a bent press.

  • I have never seen training like this! I love it...do you have any idea were I can find websites or books on the techniques for these lifts?

  • Get power to the people by pavel tsatsouline. Teaches you the bent press in there and will blow away conventional 'western' training methods

  • Pavel helped open the doors for a great many folks, but now there are some resources that are far deeper. With the re-release of Arthur Saxon's book, the Todd's Physical Culture collection in Austin, and online or print resources like Atomic Athletic and Milo, you can learn any of the old lifts.

  • awesome training. this is how i want to be training like. how do you learn how to do a bent press? did anyone taught you how to do it? or do u just look at pictures, references and videos, and just do it?

  • Both. Through years of training and practice, certain movements start to make sense. So reading the old texts as well as training with some great mentors over the years both play a role.

  • That is a BEAUTIFUL two hands anyhow! It reminds me of my favorite bent presser Aurthur Saxon (Henning).

  • thank you sir. Arthur Saxon (who some old publications quote as having the first name originally of Otto, although I'm having a hard time verifying that) still has several hundreds pounds on me. But that always leaves something to strive for!

  • I've heard about the Otto name too. But I can't remember if it was a brother's name or his... plus I've never bent pressed a bar before yet, only kettlebells and dumbells at home. Your video is my new inspiration to develop some technique at it. You're awesome, bro!

  • There's a trick to a barbell bent press (or turkish get up or windmill). Don't let it twist. Unlike a DB or KB, which usually twists with the rotation of our wrist during the movement, a barbell better not turn(much), or you'll never stop the spin. So the rotation must come completely at the shoulder joint, not the wrist and forearm.

Arthur's brothers were, I believe, Kurt and Hermann. Strong as well, but what a shadow they must have lived under.

  • What can i say.... Hardcore to the bone ;)

    You are a dinosaur ;)

  • Dude you are the man.

  • how the hell did u do that? that looked so heavy anyway, but to balance it all too???

  • nice exercises and really good strength. and cool music as well. how much do you weigh?

  • Thanks for the kind words. I weigh about 178-180.

  • Isn't it that in the bent press you are supposed to corkscrew the weight(barbell) while watching it?

  • Nope. Weight stays in the same place, the BODY corkscrews under it.

  • wow... Just how much are you using in the last bent presses? 2 plates? 225 pounds??

  • I wish. The first plate is a 35# bumper and the second is either a 10 or 15. I think. I can't remember which day this was, but my TGU max is 145. Might have been after this video.

  • Your actually doing whats called a "screw press", and not a Bent Press, not to be a jerk, because the Screw Press is not easy, but there is a real distinction between the two presses.

  • Screw press was another name for the bent press. In fact Arthur Saxon, who made bent press history with the world record that still stands, will sometimes switch the names interchangeably during his writings.

  • From an article by A. Covert, circa 1911:

BENT PRESS. This lift is also know as the "body-press" or "screw-press."

  • try two hand anyhow with a dumbell.

  • I have, and with a sandbag, cat and small child, although the last one didn't work too well, and the parents looked at me a bit odd.

I find cleaning a KB the easiest.

  • I prefer to snatch the bar then grab a dumbell, because you have to lean low to reach it.

  • So ya snatch the bar into place overhead and then windmill it down for the DB? I think we have that on another video on my channel.

  • I guess I could use two hands to snatch it then switch to one arm- but thats too easy.

I could make it harder by turning the dumbbell into a hyper kid- then I have to chase him with the bar overhead.

  • no, I meant one arm snatch.

  • just want to say that when I snatch I dont squat down or whatever else they do- I just keep my posture and dont move a foot.

being 260 and and able to do a 270lb squat all the way to the floor I dont have balance problems.

  • That, technically, isn't really a snatch. The purpose of a snatch is to create explosive hip extension combined with shoulder elevation so the arms, the weakest link in the chain, work the least.

Not sure what the relevance of a 270 pound deep squat is to balance, by the way. I know 500 pond deep squatters who could still use work on balance.

  • Not stand on one foot balance- move like when push comes to shove balance. Not a snatch? Well, then I guess its an arm raise with some back effort incolved. Heck- I whatevr I do its hard(TO ME ANYWAY).

  • Whoa...I've got to learn the bent press...how much was on that bar with the TGU? Those were crazy.

  • I believe it was 135 (a 35 and a 10 pound bumper on each side).

  • I'm not sure if the Turkish would approve, but them get ups were almost labeled 'pinned downs.'

  • LOVED your TGU technique. Thanks for sharing. Happy training and good luck!
