@48219msdetroit I haven't cut a heart shape cake from scratch but I guess you would cut out a heart shape template first and then use it to cut out the cake(?)
Hi, absolutely beautiful. How do you get the icing so tucked in? do you stretch the icing? (planning on making my first one in a week) Any recipes to make the flowers?
@reallinguist I dont really stretch the fondant - maybe just a little but you can hide the bottom with a ribbon wrapped around. I didn't make the flower paste recipe - it'd pre bought. Sorry for the late reply and hope you cake went great ; )
hi babe!ur flawless artistic n creativity can even cover those mistakes!so no worries thumbs up for all ur cake creations!I've been a fan of yours! And I've just found out that u r pregnant, congratulations!
I'm trying to make my Mum a three tiered cake for her 50th birthday, for some reason I've taken on the task. Online I've been reading that you have to use dowling to support the layers. Did you do this? If you did, can you maybe explain it to me simply???? Also did you have any problems lifting one cake onto the other.
Sorry for all the questions.....it's just that you seem to have this tiered thing pretty much sorted :) thank you
@shivvlethedivvle Hi yes I do use dowels to keep the cake from falling into itself. There's a few videos on here that show how to do this - try searching for 'how to stack a cake my way' by tonedna here on youtube. Or you can go to the wilton website which shows how to do it to. Hope that helps ; )
Just wondering - what recipe do you use for your fondant? Mine is not very stretchy even when I follow the gelatin recipe to the book!
Also, do you know if you had to add cascading flowers onto a cake, can you simply poke the wires into the cake (wires covered with paper florist tape)?
@lannter I use store bought fondant -Pettenice Icing (by Bakels). I've heard that adding tylose powder stretches it but I think it also dries it up too so not sure if that would help you. I dont do much cascading flowers but from the books I've seen I think most of the time they trim the bunched up wires in the floral tape & then insert it into a small smooth down triangle pyramid of fondant which acts as a support once glued to the cake with royal icing. I you can insert the taped wires aswell
I have already done the fondant with mashmallows (the fondant with sugar is very hard to make!!) and i'm making little roses to put them around the hearts in the bottom, I'm doing it little by little because I dont want to be discovered :P haha!
oh! is fantastic, I was just looking for heart shaped cake to get ideas and tips, i'll try to make something similar in my 5th aniversary with my sweet love ^^
thanks!
By the way, i dont have a heart shaped baking pan, have you done it in a round pan and then made the shape cutting with a knive??? anyway even if I had a heart shaped pan i would have to re-size the hearts for the 2nd and the 3rd "floor" of the construction.
I wait for your answer and sorry about my english. ^.^
Hi this is a beautiful cake! My birthday is this weekend and I really want to have frangipani flowers on my fondant cake. Did you use a special cutter to make the flower or did you just use a regular leaf cutter?
The frangipani cutter I use looks like a teardrop with a little curve at the smaller end. It's better to use the one that just looks like a teardrop without the curve. I guess you could also use a leaf cutter if it looks like a teardrop. It takes a little practice ; )
I have found the recipe - Thankyou! Although it is all in pounds and ounces. What measurements do you use, grams? If so can you please let me know what your measurements are that you use?
I used a swiss meringue recipe and then covered the cake with fondant and didn't have good results it almost seems as if the meringue was too "wet". Do you refrigarate the cake after you cover it with buttercream? How do you know how much buttercream to put on the cake?
Sometimes my SMB seems too wet aswell but after I fill the cake inbetween the cake layers of the tiers & crumb coat the sides & top (not too thick) I place it in the fridge for a couple of hours. This firms up the SMB before I place the fondant layer on. I guess how much SMB to use I dont have exact measurements ; )
This is a beautiful cake! Although, I am trying to figure out what you used for the yellow in the center of the flower. Is that some kind of edible water color?
This is a beautiful cake. Altho, I am trying to figure out what you used for the yellow in the center of the flower? Is that some kind of edible watercolor??
Thank you! I used yellow food dye mixed with a little cake decorators essence for it to evaporate quickly. I tried mixing the dye with icing sugar to make a powder that I could dust on like ebible yellow chalk dust (since I didnt have any at the time) but it didn't work.
Hey Marsha! We have all just recovered from the flu as it is winter here! My baby just got her first teeth coming through this week aswell so a lot of sleepless nights right now. Hope you & your girls are all doing well ; )
Thank you! I just did some in the pink colour & used them in my first flower spray with ivy leaves & filler flowers. Will have to post that one soon too as I love pink!
could you explain how you smooth fondant with the big fondant ball? i've never heard of that before. i love the design and the dragees on the back just finishes it off nicely. beautiful flowers!
I use the ball of fondant in my hand & kind of buff the surface of the fondant in a circular motion to even out all the bumps. I do it until I'm happy with the surface. It's great if you have really uneven surfaces to smooth out as the ball of fondant can be shaped to fit whatever the surface is like. I use this method on my Wonder woman cake too which would be hard to smooth using the flat fondant smoothers that are available.
and may i know if you put central dowel too for this 3-tier cake? thanks :-)

Would you be able to share your Swiss Meringue Buttercream Recipe?

I have found the recipe - Thankyou! Although it is all in pounds and ounces. What measurements do you use, grams? If so can you please let me know what your measurements are that you use?

I just measure my egg whites in grams, then double & triple that amount for the sugar & butter. Eg 100grams egg white. 200g sugar, 300g butter.
