What I am aware of is the fact that the northern region of that island and its people have always been seperate and distinct from the south for thousands of years. 'One Ireland one people' has never existed and never will, it is a myth. As for 'free state', that is all relative when you consider the desire of many in NI for freedom from the marauding hands of the south.
