Sometimes Kirby will grab the bat for me too. It is because you didn't apply enough pressure to the joystick for it to register "up" but you probably already know that. With that start you have to build consistency from your errors. For example, if you do everything correctly but the u-tilt does not connect, you must try doing it faster the next retry. If you don't turn around, then you need to apply a tiny bit more pressure left next time, and again, if you grab the bat you should push up more.
