Is that photographer serious? 'Oh, models are perfect and never need retouching (which is nonsense anyway, they often do), but these will have to be retouched because of imperfections.' I thought that was the point; that beauty wasn't based on perfection? It's a glaring example of just why larger women will always struggle to be recognised as beautiful or iconic, and not ''be allowed to be happy with the size they are", as Dawn said so beautifully herself.
And the photographer is seriously misinformed. War today for only 3 years? What planet is he living on? Hasn't he ever heard of a place called Afghanistan?
If our ancestors were alive today they would seriously curse us. For they worked all their lives with the vain hope of one day having enough food and comfort as we do today, and here we are, in possession of more than they could have dreamed possible, and we are still not happy.
"Thats what man are admired for?" What a douche. Im a pro photographer and i feel so embaressed for him, you cant say that when your shooting. Its unprofessional and rude. You ask any man and he will want a curvy woman. Women tend to starve themselves and worry and fuss because they want the approoval of other women. Women get boob jobs for the approoval of men.
I really don't like that photographer, "She looks quite attractive with all that make up on". Why does he have to edit the photos because there are some bulges her and there? I hate airbrushing, I want to see real women in their own skin, not a skin that was painted for them.
Wow that photographer sounds so out of touch. As if the bodies of women in early days were not visible, at least in the forms of their voluptuous dresses. The women at that time showed health, enough wealth and prosperity to be very well fed and have leisure. This of course was highly prized and aesthetisized. It was the opposite. Then, poor people starved and working people were bone thin and had bad diets. That has reversed now.
& did you get the backward way in which he implied that the men were so starved for sex that they were only too glad to bed their 'lazy' tent-women when they got back from decades of war? Ugh.
Dawn French is a beautiful woman no matter what size she is.. part of why she's attractive is she sees herself that way.. she sees herself as the sex kitten and I think men see her that way too!! and then top that off with her talent and she's a knock out :-)
WOW, the dick photographer just made Dawn's point for her, didn't he? Open mouth, insert foot. This whole film is Dawn saying how being big shouldn't necessarily be considered an imperfection, and he still couldn't let it go. Also, he was spouting CRAP about big women in Reuben's age. Big women used to be a status symbol--they were wealthy enough to eat well and not exert themselves with physical labor. Skinny women were a symbol of either working class life or a sickly, weak constitution
Totally agree, that he has the nerve to talk about the women in the way that he does amazes me "these women aren't very nice, are they?" Complete and utter asshole! And another thing: he ain't exactly a sex bomb himself, so where does he get off... Hope he got a lot of crap comments about him after they showed this the first time...
During the time of Rubens, women's heaviness was a sign of wealth because most people couldn't get enough to eat. A heavy woman was something to aspire to be or have in your life. It meant you had money, happiness, health and status.
Now the opposite is believed. Since most of us now live in a world of plenty, being model thin has become the ideal; mostly because it is unattainable by most women. Unfortunately, thinness now equals happiness.
I really admire Dawn French for making this, she's awesome, but the "feminist" voice-over woman who blames feminism, or, uh hm, "Feminist discourse" or whatever for the beauty standards women are held to is taking the easy way, I think--it's harder to look at the real problem of sexism aimed at fat women by MEN, (like the lame guy photographer in this piece) & feminism has NEVER claimed fat women were victims of their bodies (c'mon, look at Andrea Dworkin, bell hooks, & other fat feminist women)
I think the point she was making about victimhood is that there needs to be some sort of notion of power about the fad body; not just any account of the pain that the system causes to people who differ from its standards but the very value of being different. She's not very clear or articulate though; that mention of feminist discourse (she was refering to the history of feminist theory and concerns, probably) was very offhand and very confusing.
The photographer speaking is a fucking MORON. They sat around making tapestries. My fat ass they did, While the men were at war who does he suppose was feeding the families, farming, running the houses, cooking, minding the livestock?! Unless you're talking aristocracy, they women were NOT sitting around makiing tapestries. Women are chubby because its natural. And men who like it are realistic and not shallow bastards with no idea of what is natural, healthy or realistic.
No, sorry if i sound like an asshole , but being fat is not the bodies natural state ( being model-thin isnt either by the way).
The bodies natural state is being strong and fit, not fat not thin, just fit.
I bet you no caveman was fat because they eated what they needed and thats all, its when we started having food available all the time with no effort that we got fat.
But yeah, the photographer is an asshole, heavy people can be beautiful.
No caveman was fat because most of the time they were starving and trying to find food supply. Starving isn't being fit, and they didn't live very long did they.
And the older you get the more fat your body will naturally put on even if you kept the same diet and exercise.
They most certainly did starve and quite often. Food was not in great supply and if it was they wouldn't have been running around hunting for it all the time, putting their lives at risk.
They would have been comfortably sitting there eating at their leisure. But they didn't have that option.
If you want to idealize cavemen life and think it was great because they were thin than perhaps you should reconsider how hard it was to get food and also consider that they died long before the age of 30.
Thats natural, have you ever seen a fat lion? a fat tiger? no right? because their in equilibrium with their surroundings.
What do you wanted them to do? put the food in refrigerators? it natural to hunt for food, thats what animals do, thats what we did before we built cities and started storing food.
And they died at that age because its when they stopped being able to survive.
Is that worse than living to become a useless person that cant even breath, eat or go to the bathroom by himself?
If a lion or a tiger had an endless supply of food you'd bet your dollar they'd keep eating. In fact animals will keep eating if they have access to food. Not to mention that animals have a different kind of fat than humans have and it operates differently (fact)
Not only that your assumptions of fat are very general and biased. Way to put on stereotypes of fat people as useless and can't breath. Talk about projecting hate and based on nothing but prejudice not truth.
first of all i didnt said that fat people were useless and couldnt breath, i said that dying at an age when you stop being able to survive by yourself is not any sadder than living so long that you become so old that youre useless and cant even breath by yourself.
But talking about that, when youre fat you do become kinda usless, you cant even run without losing your breath (talking from experience, i used to be fat)
Contrary to popular belief, some people are naturally larger or smaller. Granted there is a huge difference between being built bigger, and being obese. No one should be obese. But just look at skeleton sizes and it proves my point. There are hundreds of contributing factors to being larger or smaller. Food and activity are just a drop in the bucket. PS. "they eated"? Where'd you learn your English? Perhaps from the cavemen you seem to know so much about.
1.-You can be naturally larger or smaller but that doesn't change the fact that people get fat from eating too much so your comment is pretty much pointless.
2.- FIne, i made a grammatical mistake, so? english is not my primary language so a mistake every once in a while is expected, lets see you argue with someone in spanish without making any mistakes.
Ooh, touchy touchy. I'm sorry I hurt your precious feelings.*cough* *not* No, it does not change the fact that SOME people get fat from eating too much, but what's that got to do with it? If you'll care to re-read, what I said is that not everyone is as "fit" as your caveman because of a whole slew of stuff that does not include JUST eating and exercise. Just because a person is large doesn't mean that they are a fat over-eating slob who doesn't try. Some are. But not all, as you seem to imply
so if i dont down back down from my argument immediatly im mad?
and the fact that you think im mad makes you happy?
You are dumb for assuming the first part and i think its pretty sad that something so trivial makes you happy but o well, to each its own.
about the diseases you said, how many of the fat people around us have those diseases? maybe 5%, 10% at the most, the fact is most people around us are fat because they dont take care of themselves not because they have a syndrome.
The fact that you are mad about the most ridiculous comments makes me laugh at you, yes. And it's not about backing down. If you really can delude yourself that people can ONLY get fat from eating too much, by all means, continue to comment about it. But in America, when you repeatedly try to deny something like that... "And I'm not getting mad!" it's a sure sign that you really are, and you've got nothing else to do but whine about it like a little kid.
did you even read my comment? i said that there are people that are fat from diseases, but theyre a very small minority, most people are fat because of lack of exercise or overating or both, thats a fact.
and why does the fact that i said im not mad makes it so im mad? im just discussing a point, does that mean im mad?
btw i didnt put an exclamation mark when i said that i wasnt mad, so your either delusional and trying to convince yourself im mad or you really refuse to read my comments.
@davidgzmn12345 "maybe 5%, 10% at the most, the fact is most people around us are fat because they dont take care of themselves not because they have a syndrome."
Hate to rain on your parade, but nobody's actually done clear censuses recently to verify what percentage of people actually have the aforementioned syndromes, and few physicians actually do the tests correctly because, like you, they believe that fat people become fat due to their own self-neglect.
@davidgzmn12345 The last statistic people did for hypothyroidism was back in the 1960's, and then it was about 30% of the fat people checked, not 5 or 10%. And even that isn't reliable because, to this day, we still know relatively little about these syndromes.
So to say that these syndromes are rare isn't quite a myth, but it's still false because the data isn't there to back it up. You also need to factor in eating disorders and addictive foods, and this gives you a much different picture.
@davidgzmn12345 Recent studies have shown that certain foods with sugars, fats and salts, like fast food, are highly addictive to those receptive to it, on par with cocaine addiction. There are also eating disorders which the victim binges without purging. Emotional eating, comfort eating, whatever you want to call it, it plays a role in causing obesity. There has even been evidence that not having a certain type of intestinal bacteria can play a part in weight gain.
@davidgzmn12345 Yes, but my point was to counter your claim that these diseases are "rare," when nobody has enough data to make such a claim. The last few examples I gave were just to bolster my final post.
Also, how does "not having certain types of intestinal bacteria" allude to eating too much?
@davidgzmn12345 Whoa, that's new. Nobody ever admits being wrong on the internet so readily. That, my friend, is a clear sign of intelligence and maturity on your part and I thank you for being so civil.
@davidgzmn12345 I'm saying that the stereotype that "Fatties absorb everything like sponges and sit around the house" is exactly that- a stereotype. And it's a stereotype that's slowly fading into myth, a myth perpetuated by folks who either have stock in the diet industry, or who, when you get down to the nitty gritty of it, just find fat bodies repulsive and need a good excuse to be assholes.
By the way, thanks for making my day, too. Because that really is the dumbest comment I've ever seen on youtube, and I've seen some doozies. I think I'm gonna be laughing to myself for at least a week.
No. Saying that the ONLY possible way that someone could get fat is by eating too much with no exercise is dumb. It's just not true. Like I freely said, it IS true that lots of people are obese because of that. But you were saying that every single person who is fat got that way from being a gluttonous couch potato. And I was merely pointing out that the narrow-mindedness of that comment clearly shows either your lack of intellect or your complete bigotry and refusal to accept scientific fact.
Ps. I agree with Vamplis. You're trying to idealize what was probably a really rough life. If you think being a caveman was such a great way of life, maybe you should go start a colony. Then you would never be on the internet getting mad over the stupidest things. Although I admit, it really is hilarious watching you get so mad and defensive. It makes me smile inside. Hasta luego, mi amigo. :D
I guess it's just an American thing, or something. No use explaining. But if you'll notice, I was referring to two specific things:
"If your fat you either
a) over eat
b)under exercise
c)most probably both
there are no other ways to be fat." And
"Saying that people are fat because they eat too much and dont exercise is dumb?"
So you did say it. And you were wrong. And I was just pointing out that, at least here, generalizing like that makes you, in the words of my friend, a complete douchebag.
Whilst I do agree that big women are beautiful, I think that Dawn gets away with being the size she is because she is extremely pretty and funny. Most women would not look that good at her weight.
The photographer says that Reubenesque woman were large due to their lack of excercise. Well I happen to know plenty of rack-thin teenage girls that don't get that much excercise, but DO have fast metabolisms... hence this, I DO excercise regularly and eat healthily and I'm a UK size 12-14/Australian size 14-16. Hope I've made sense...
Dawn French is amazing and has an uncanny knack for being chubby AND attractive at the same time.

I admire women when they are good or do something that is hard to do. Being fat is kinda the oposite.. it shows that they dont really give a fuck and thats not a woman for me.
I agree, Dick of the highest order. Bigger women are very beautiful, and if you look if Vouge you will see teeny tiny women, but if you look at mens magazines most of the models are a size 10, 12, even 14 sometimes, its something Dawn has seemed to have forgotten, that skinny models do it for other women.
I think that thing they always say about the camera adding weight is just BS. I mean if it does that to people the same principle would apply to any object being photographed, hence the woman wouldn't look bigger cos everything else would too.
so he's saying women were fat cuz the men were away & they had nothing to do but eat? what a prat! there have allways been big women, there allways will be the only difference is back then nobody gave 2 shit, now omg ur heavier then that skinny bitch walking down the runway ergo u must be a fat lazy bint. now im a hypocrit cuz i view myself as fat (im size 10-12), but when i think of df i never think of her as fat perhaps cuz shes got shit loads more confidence then me n is happy god bless her!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
while a person can be as heavy as they choose, it does say something about their worldview. im attracted to the motivation, strength and drive behind a woman/man who has the stuff to keep their ass nice and tight. It's easier to ba fat so therefore more rare and less attractive. like green eyes in china.
but then there are people who have the motivation and strength, but are still "large". I have a friend who runs miles daily and has done marathons and biathlons, but she still has a large bottom and middle. and on the other hand, my cousin is very thin [kate moss thin] and can't get fat no matter how much she eats. i'm not saying it's all to be blamed on genetics and metabolism, but that's definitely part of it.
Me too. I hate how thin [no tits, flat ass, boney]= perfection. but so much damage has been done, that it'll take centuries to revert back to full woman being the peak of beauty and perfection.
That photographer has just made me want to eat 4 cream cakes in a row. Tits and ass don't come from exercise, you need cream cakes or silicone and silicone don't feel right. I'm off to do tapestry in my tent now.
I'm loving this program. I fight with scales all the time. Now I'm going to think twice (or more!), before worrying about watching my weight every time I eat something I like!
At the beginning I resented that potographer's talk, too. Perfectly illustrating the point, though - isn't this how people see and think of it unless they challenge their views?
He really struggles a bit: "The one of Dawn, I think, is great, she looks really att-, you know, really quite attractive. I mean, not that she isn't..." Come to think of it... maybe he really just expresses himself rather clumsily and does not want to sound derogatory at all. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
what is he on about? they're big women, not 'very large'. in my eyes that photo did not need airbrushing. he wants to show how bigger women look yet is on about retouching. absolute hypocritsy.
Exactly!! And isn't the whole point of the photo's to show differences and to challenge what we perceive as perfection? For someone who obviously doesn't like "big" women he is a rather large tit himself!
I think the media does not like women to even have a ''few pounds too many'' I am not talking about obese.. but don't we all have a right to be individual.. as long as the weight is not endangering our health with a couple of extra pounds.. after all being an anorexic model is normal either but advertising promotes the wish to look perfect especially in teenage girls.. and then Anorexia is just as big a problem as obesity.
This was transferred from British Television to Pal VHS converted to VHS to Region Free DVD...yes, there is a wonky part in the middle...nothing can be done about it, sorry.
that photographer is a straight fag.

davidgzmn12345 2 years ago
The fact that you are mad about the most ridiculous comments makes me laugh at you, yes. And it's not about backing down. If you really can delude yourself that people can ONLY get fat from eating too much, by all means, continue to comment about it. But in America, when you repeatedly try to deny something like that... "And I'm not getting mad!" it's a sure sign that you really are, and you've got nothing else to do but whine about it like a little kid.
sokrplyr2 2 years ago
did you even read my comment? i said that there are people that are fat from diseases, but theyre a very small minority, most people are fat because of lack of exercise or overating or both, thats a fact.
and why does the fact that i said im not mad makes it so im mad? im just discussing a point, does that mean im mad?
btw i didnt put an exclamation mark when i said that i wasnt mad, so your either delusional and trying to convince yourself im mad or you really refuse to read my comments.

Dipstikk 1 year ago
@davidgzmn12345 The last statistic people did for hypothyroidism was back in the 1960's, and then it was about 30% of the fat people checked, not 5 or 10%. And even that isn't reliable because, to this day, we still know relatively little about these syndromes.
So to say that these syndromes are rare isn't quite a myth, but it's still false because the data isn't there to back it up. You also need to factor in eating disorders and addictive foods, and this gives you a much different picture.
Dipstikk 1 year ago
@davidgzmn12345 Recent studies have shown that certain foods with sugars, fats and salts, like fast food, are highly addictive to those receptive to it, on par with cocaine addiction. There are also eating disorders which the victim binges without purging. Emotional eating, comfort eating, whatever you want to call it, it plays a role in causing obesity. There has even been evidence that not having a certain type of intestinal bacteria can play a part in weight gain.
Dipstikk 1 year ago
@Dipstikk ok, this was a really old argument, but if you want an answer, ill give it to you.
All of the reasons you mentioned for being fat are related to people eating too much, you just gave me different examples of WHY people eat too much.
about hypothyroidism, yeah, its a disease that makes you fat no matter what you eat, so im obviously not referring to that.
davidgzmn12345 1 year ago
@davidgzmn12345 Yes, but my point was to counter your claim that these diseases are "rare," when nobody has enough data to make such a claim. The last few examples I gave were just to bolster my final post.
Also, how does "not having certain types of intestinal bacteria" allude to eating too much?
Dipstikk 1 year ago
@Dipstikk Oh, sorry, missed that part. I was unaware of that cause. So, yeah, your right on that one.
davidgzmn12345 1 year ago 2
@davidgzmn12345 Whoa, that's new. Nobody ever admits being wrong on the internet so readily. That, my friend, is a clear sign of intelligence and maturity on your part and I thank you for being so civil.
Dipstikk 1 year ago 2
@davidgzmn12345 I'm saying that the stereotype that "Fatties absorb everything like sponges and sit around the house" is exactly that- a stereotype. And it's a stereotype that's slowly fading into myth, a myth perpetuated by folks who either have stock in the diet industry, or who, when you get down to the nitty gritty of it, just find fat bodies repulsive and need a good excuse to be assholes.
Dipstikk 1 year ago
By the way, thanks for making my day, too. Because that really is the dumbest comment I've ever seen on youtube, and I've seen some doozies. I think I'm gonna be laughing to myself for at least a week.
sokrplyr2 2 years ago
Saying that fat people are fat because they eat too much and dont exercise is dumb?
i guess that means that saying that people drown because they are unable to breath underwater is also dumb right?
davidgzmn12345 2 years ago
No. Saying that the ONLY possible way that someone could get fat is by eating too much with no exercise is dumb. It's just not true. Like I freely said, it IS true that lots of people are obese because of that. But you were saying that every single person who is fat got that way from being a gluttonous couch potato. And I was merely pointing out that the narrow-mindedness of that comment clearly shows either your lack of intellect or your complete bigotry and refusal to accept scientific fact.
sokrplyr2 2 years ago
sokrplyr2 2 years ago
Im not idealizing a cavemans life, and im not getting mad.
And i dont think its a great way of life, i would´nt want to live that way.
Btw, that spanish bit is badly written, it would be "hasta luego, amigo mio" =P
davidgzmn12345 2 years ago
I guess it's just an American thing, or something. No use explaining. But if you'll notice, I was referring to two specific things:
"If your fat you either
a) over eat
b)under exercise
c)most probably both
there are no other ways to be fat." And
"Saying that people are fat because they eat too much and dont exercise is dumb?"
So you did say it. And you were wrong. And I was just pointing out that, at least here, generalizing like that makes you, in the words of my friend, a complete douchebag.

I like large women, nothing with it at all, but at the end of the day, depends on the women, no two women are alike
Pauluk33 2 years ago

Janusha 3 years ago
Hah, that photographer doesn't seem to know the context in which he will be placed. But nonetheless, I do kind of like that Reubens photoshoot.
thatdrattedcat 3 years ago 4
I agree, Dick of the highest order. Bigger women are very beautiful, and if you look if Vouge you will see teeny tiny women, but if you look at mens magazines most of the models are a size 10, 12, even 14 sometimes, its something Dawn has seemed to have forgotten, that skinny models do it for other women.
MissStyk 3 years ago 2
that photographer is so stupid he doesn't even know he got set up good. the camera is on buddy!
mightycowhero 3 years ago
I think that thing they always say about the camera adding weight is just BS. I mean if it does that to people the same principle would apply to any object being photographed, hence the woman wouldn't look bigger cos everything else would too.
nikki2300dk 3 years ago 5
omg i never thought of it like that lol thats a neat way of looking at it :P
BurningTruth 3 years ago
anyway if you use bigger models any extra weight would probably be much less noticeable than if u used a smaller one

so he's saying women were fat cuz the men were away & they had nothing to do but eat? what a prat! there have allways been big women, there allways will be the only difference is back then nobody gave 2 shit, now omg ur heavier then that skinny bitch walking down the runway ergo u must be a fat lazy bint. now im a hypocrit cuz i view myself as fat (im size 10-12), but when i think of df i never think of her as fat perhaps cuz shes got shit loads more confidence then me n is happy god bless her!

while a person can be as heavy as they choose, it does say something about their worldview. im attracted to the motivation, strength and drive behind a woman/man who has the stuff to keep their ass nice and tight. It's easier to ba fat so therefore more rare and less attractive. like green eyes in china.
sexysebastian 3 years ago
but then there are people who have the motivation and strength, but are still "large".
StoliDassah 3 years ago 6

Me too. I hate how thin [no tits, flat ass, boney]= perfection. but so much damage has been done, that it'll take centuries to revert back to full woman being the peak of beauty and perfection.
StoliDassah 3 years ago 6
That photographer has just made me want to eat 4 cream cakes in a row. Tits and ass don't come from exercise, you need cream cakes or silicone and silicone don't feel right. I'm off to do tapestry in my tent now.

I'm loving this program. I fight with scales all the time. Now I'm going to think twice (or more!), before worrying about watching my weight every time I eat something I like!
Amebugi 3 years ago 5
At the beginning I resented that potographer's talk, too. Perfectly illustrating the point, though - isn't this how people see and think of it unless they challenge their views?
He really struggles a bit: "The one of Dawn, I think, is great, she looks really att-, you know, really quite attractive. I mean, not that she isn't..." Come to think of it... maybe he really just expresses himself rather clumsily and does not want to sound derogatory at all. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
PerditaXNitt 3 years ago
Makes me sick to the stomach to hear the photographer talking..."Dawn is quite beautiful, you know, with the makeup..." Airbrushing everything...

'these women are very large women...'
what is he on about? they're big women, not 'very large'. in my eyes that photo did not need airbrushing. he wants to show how bigger women look yet is on about retouching. absolute hypocritsy.
illuminationpoetry 3 years ago 11
Exactly!! And isn't the whole point of the photo's to show differences and to challenge what we perceive as perfection? For someone who obviously doesn't like "big" women he is a rather large tit himself!
sn00zle 3 years ago 9
OK, wait - is it me or is that baby in the photo shoot too ... skinny??! How could that have happened?!
