During the time of Rubens, women's heaviness was a sign of wealth because most people couldn't get enough to eat. A heavy woman was something to aspire to be or have in your life. It meant you had money, happiness, health and status.

Now the opposite is believed. Since most of us now live in a world of plenty, being model thin has become the ideal; mostly because it is unattainable by most women. Unfortunately, thinness now equals happiness.

I think the point she was making about victimhood is that there needs to be some sort of notion of power about the fad body; not just any account of the pain that the system causes to people who differ from its standards but the very value of being different. They most certainly did starve and quite often. Food was not in great supply and if it was they wouldn't have been running around hunting for it all the time, putting their lives at risk.

They would have been comfortably sitting there eating at their leisure. But they didn't have that option.

If you want to idealize cavemen life and think it was great because they were thin than perhaps you should reconsider how hard it was to get food and also consider that they died long before the age of 30.

Contrary to popular belief, some people are naturally larger or smaller. Granted there is a huge difference between being built bigger, and being obese. No one should be obese. But just look at skeleton sizes and it proves my point. There are hundreds of contributing factors to being larger or smaller. Food and activity are just a drop in the bucket. PS. "they eated"? @davidgzmn12345 The last statistic people did for hypothyroidism was back in the 1960's, and then it was about 30% of the fat people checked, not 5 or 10%. And even that isn't reliable because, to this day, we still know relatively little about these syndromes.

So to say that these syndromes are rare isn't quite a myth, but it's still false because the data isn't there to back it up. You also need to factor in eating disorders and addictive foods, and this gives you a much different picture.
