  • ahmaigawrsh tighten the bow, please! sorry it's just bothering me; it also might help the sound. Your left hand looks pretty good, but your right should be flexible when bowing. It's been almost 5 years, are you still playing?

  • im not a good violinist and you're pretty good with the notes, THAT i see. But, your pinky is supposed to be bent and your hand needs to be straight

  • You have a good ear for music.

  • Your bow hold is awful... Your right elbow should be slightly *above* your hand so you kind of lean into it. Not hanging down from your hand as you show in your video. If this is the result from your learning from video lessons (where it's not shown like this) then you're better off taking real lessons...

  • @12aapjes hahaha thats why you need to pay for lessons! and in person

  • your bow hold needs ALOT of work, if you want to get better you need to correct it now. your little finger should be near the "pidgeon"hole, which is the mother of pearl circle on the side, not down at the end. holding a bow feels really un natural at first, so people tend to hold it wrong when they start, you dont want to get bogged down in that!

  • hey hun, your bow hold is not quite right.

  • tip put your wrist down

and get a violin teacher using youtube as lessons isnt right you cant learn wether your playing in tune

  • I think what makes the violin sound so nice is the absense of frets resulting in seamless transitions.

  • Zuzuki

  • You right hand made mine hurts like hell... Go look for a teacher before this gets worse.

  • eeeww G-G

  • that's good :) i,m about to begin learning the violin XD

  • @100coolkat001 thanks and good luck! :)

  • Hi sionit, I was also wondering which videos you're watching so checked out the link you posted in response to DeathNoteRyuk24 question, unfortunately the link to the playlist doesnt work for me. would you be able to check the link again if it works?? thanks a lot

  • @javaMe yep i posted the link like that, because it's not possible to post link in video's comments. if you replace the "youtube" into the normal triple-w dot youtube dot com then the rest view_play_list?p=D03DC71DA79795E0 combined should work :)

  • @sionit Sorry, yeah i forgot that it's not allowed to post a link as a comment. Yeah it did work. thanks a lot. :D

  • @sionit hey i bought my self a violin for around 40$ too! lol i suck at it and im teaching my self.. how di you do it? di you ever get a Teacher?

  • @violet1197 the violin kept breaking the e string because of the problematic tuning pegs (what can i expect, it's a cheap one). i also found something else better suited to my hands, so i stopped playing violin :)

  • Comment removed

  • I just bought a new violin and it it should be here tomorrow and i'm only watching youtubes as well and i was wondering which ones you were watching?

  • @DeathNoteRyuk24 you can check my playlist called "violin"

    youtube/view_play_list?p=D03DC71DA79795E0

  • tighten your bow a little bit more! :)

  • you're very good for only three weeks!

  • thanks for all your comments!

however i stopped learning these days.. got other things to do :)

thanks for your support! keep learning!

  • OK, I give you MAD props. I've been playing for 3 weeks, and am trying to straighten out "Amazing Grace" to where it somewhat reflect the emotion it needs. I don't think I'm doing too bad for self-taught, and it helps that I've played the flute and guitar for over 10 years.. but not by too much. I too gave up the silver strips because I felt I just did better by ear. I look forward to seeing how you progress!! :)

  • and btw u can hear that this violin coasts 40$ -.- maybe new 100 oder somethink but its better to start with one for 300$ or more

  • i play th eguitar and want to begin playing violine now ;)

  • i tried to play the violin and the guitar...

in my opinion many guitarists like to play the violin....but that didnt work out for me so i stopped to play the violing.

  • wow, no offense but you sound just like me!!!... i have a background on piano and guitar....my first problem was the finger placements but after 3 days i decided to remove them so that i can learn by ear. then my next problem was the position of the vio on my shoulder coz i did not get the shoulder pad. right now my 2 problems are my right hand and the very irritating squeak!!! well, i kinda have a very "healthy" fingers i don't work a lot. i can now play ode to joy continuously but with skwiks!

  • i'm a violin player... and a guitarist so you have the same problem i had so don't hold your fingerboard like a guitar fingerboard.. much more freely... i recommand you to go to a real teacher couse violin is not a guitar... much more emotion.. you can learn the basic but you'll be stuck at some point couse there are hard things that needs to be tought at the begining.

    good luck, alon

  • More power to you bro, I'm about to do the same thing. My violin should be here in a few days and I'll start from scratch. I bought a mute though so I can practice at home and not torture my roommate =P

  • did you buy the violin with some accessories like the case, extra strings, rosin, etc..?

anyways,my sister also bought me a violin from eBay and i mastered the twinkle twinkle and amazing grace in 1day.same wt u :) and i'm fiddling. i have absolutely no background for violin but i play the piano too

  • yep the case and shoulder pad were included, but then i bought the rosin and extra strings.

cool, i'll try amazing grace, then! :)

  • whoa..!!! i'm doing the same thing... i have pro guitar backgrounds so its quite easy on coping up with things in violin stuffs... i mastered twingkle in 2 days, and as of now, 1 week and 4 days, i've been playing ave maria, aerith's theem song, cloud smile, and suzuki book 1...

  • cool.. you must have been practicing a lot!

  • wat were some of the vidsdat you learned from???

cuz im trying to do the same thing

  • if you check from my playlists, there's one called "violin". i keep them there..

  • Your playing is out of tune.

  • hey why i diddent get those things when i bought mine T.T the white things

    hahah just joking

  • lol it's from the previous owner. i let it there :p

  • Twinkle twinkle star is easy, I played it after 1 week of violin, then Im able to master it the day I played it in about minutes.

  • bowing pinky should not be straight should be curved. fingering pinky should not be curled back should be curled forward. a first lesson would have gone over those.

  • i learned that in a day but it sound wonky lol hehe, good luck ey

  • wow! that's very good for just 3 weeks... considering that you don't have proper tutorials... great!

  • awesome!

  • I thought it was pretty good for 3 weeks, i can tell that I would take months to learn fucking twinkle twinkle little start XD I hate violin XD

  • very good. are you still practicing?

what is the label name inside the violin/fiddle? it looks sweet in color.

  • but not sweet in sound, which is the most important factor.

  • nice work man, u did really great, i taught my self to play the guitar like 3 years ago, i got pretty good too, now my friend brought me a violin, i tried to do the same but noway, i need a teacher for this one. keep up the good work =)

  • @flamexXxstrings Too right, ive got the feeling that the violin requires a lot of comitment.Nothing like the guitar.

  • Hehe, top stuff.

But point the bow hair towards the foot of the bridge, not away from it, and relax your bow hand a bit more. Also, you should be playing with a much tighter bow. Keep working at it, though. Not bad for 3 weeks.

  • I play the piano and guitar well and have just started the violin. I think it is the hardest instrument I've played because there are no 'marked out' notes. You have to just find them and even a single millimetre out makes it flat or sharp. On guitar and piano the frets and keys make the notes obvious. It is so much easier to get a correct note and you can focus on technique rather than getting a 'good' note.

  • the violin might not have as many notes but there is alot more of technique compared to the guitar, piano, and bass.

  • @virdenfiddler To your opinion which instrument do you like most?

  • @virdenfiddler

i wouldnt be so sure about classical guitar

  • @virdenfiddler Ive been taking 10 years of guitar lessons and i recently have picked up violin and I totally agree with you, and bass is 'basically' guitar haha.

  • @virdenfiddler If you're talking about basic block chording, simple melodies, "cowboy chords," then maybe you're right. There's a lifetime of more nuanced learning in any of these instruments if your interest goes beyond the beginner basics into actual music-making. Ask any classical guitarist, pro bassist, and/or successful concert pianist.

  • it's A LOT harder than it looks. getting a decent sound out of the violin can take years of pratice.

to the person in the video: your pinky on your right hand should be curved like your other fingers.

  • i think its wonderful that your starting an instrument but your rushing your self threw confidence. You try to learn songs fast, without trying to read notes, without correcting bad hand positions or bow holds. Well, i am really good 1st chair violist (i play viola) and if i did that to my ELM. school teacher, he would get mad. Never rush threw a song. I had many good teachers so i could learn songs fast, but i had to have it perfect before i can move on. Don't rush yourself, perfect yourself.

  • Nice work- I taught myself to play violin on my Great Grandfather's 114 year old violin. Its a 3/4 size but i still play it. You are able to teach yourself, I've done it an am able to compose music for many stringed instruments. Keep up the good work!

Make sure to tighten the bow some the hair is off the stick some- that will help in sound quality and volume.

    Play on!!!

    :)

  • thanks to those with encouraging comments!

for the serious ones, come on, i was doing this with a great sense of humour :)

  • keep it up :) violin is a hard one to learn :)

  • ure pinky is to far out and timing is off but no worries just work aliitle when i fisrt starde playin it took me a yr to leard just d and astrings i play viola nad ive been playing for 10 yrs now

  • Hey , you need to turn your left rist in more when playing. and make sure you are doing "boxes" w/ your left fingers! Not to shabby so far! keep it up !

  • and... do you that you have to tighten your bow? xD

  • AnyBody ask u? not that i know of.

  • playing violin is really difficult. and if you think he has learnt with youtube... he's not bad at all. keep on playing. bye

  • I played twinkle star day 1 better than that :P

  • tighten your bow pleasssse!

  • You're doing a good job although your intonation needs work (quite alot) but that's very normal for all beginners. Another thing is that you need to tighten your bow more! Right now, the hair's very close to the stick. Turn the metal thing at the bottom of the stick "away" from you until the hair becomes taut. The space between the hair and bow should be the same "width" as the thickness of the stick. When you look at it from afar, the stick should still be slightly bent, not totally straight.

  • Keep practising! :) Focus more on right hand, it is very important.

  • that sounded great but you can only do the fingering with you left hand. cheap for a violin. oh and check if it has a flat b sign or a sharp # on the note you mess up on. if it is a flat move your finger away from your face or move your finger towards the scroll( head of the violin) if it is a sharp then move towards you face or away from the scroll. do you play guitar?

  • those white sticky paper self adhesive labels you get on a roll cut into strips are good for marking positions if youre a newb like me.

  • not bad been playing viola since I was in 4th grade and now I am in 12th grade keep it up good job

  • i myself play the viola and i do understand the violin is a little trickier but work a little bit on the bow hold(bend your thumb and curve your pinky a little more!!)

Other than tht im so impressed ur so GoOd!!

  • I just want to say that you should NOT use those markings on your violin.

Trust me; you must not only train your fingers but also your ear and without looking at your fingers while playing (bad habit).

Other than that, keep it up! =D

  • wat vids didja use? can u send them to me? i'm trying to learn too

  • they're in my playlist/favourites.. called violin

  • More Like Violin in 3 minutes! You did good, but you still need a lot of practice.

  • thanks!

  • omg... i strongly suggest you get private lessons. Trust me you'd do a lot more progress with private lessons in 3 weeks than youtube videos (as helpful as they are), I mean, you don't even tighten your bow! it's way too loose! But im impressed that you're doing this well with just youtube lessons. Please take private lessons, you have SO much potential!

  • violin is hard. Get a teacher and work on a method, and preferably an old fashioned one.

  • whats up brother. Im trying to do the same thing but i cant find any good videos! which ones are you using?

  • [youtube]view_play_list?p=D03DC71DA79795E0

    please see my playlist "violin"

  • I've watched a lot of violin, but haven't started playing yet myself. It looks to me though like your wrist is too stiff, can anyoe confirm or deny this?

  • yeah of course it's too stiff ^^;;

what can you expect in 3 weeks? hehe

  • I don't expect anything, just trying to be helpful. :)

  • you can actually expect a lot with private lessons. I know I commented like a long time ago but I stumbled upon this again. Have you made more progress? It's interesting what one can do after a period of time. I actually plan on posting a video of me teaching proper technique and posture as my way of learning how to teach. When I do I would love it if you check out how I teach. I'm still a student and I want to teach violin.

  • thanks!

but my bowing also sucks :) we need more practice, eh?

  • nice but strike your bow near the bridge for loud sound

  • thx for the tip!

  • You learned off of YouTube videos?

That's awesome, because I am trying to teach myself at home!

  • yep, because i already could play guitar.. so i had some musical basics..

  • very kool! I know how to play the guitar and bass.. so maybe i have the capability to play violin

  • try it then, good luck! ^^

  • Am i just imagining or did you forget to tense the bow?

  • yes, i did. in fact, i didn't know how tense it should be. now i know after learning more violin techniques.

  • I think you did a pretty good job for being a beginner. I sounded a lot worse when I first started. My only critique would be your wrist. Your wrist shouldn't be parallel with the neck. Lower your wrist and that would fix it.

  • thanks!

    i was thinking, maybe i need 7/8 violin? :)

  • Hi

I am a beginner like you! I think you are not so bad. The negative comments are from people, who have nothing ambicizm. I am learning violin like you ... myself. I play on piano so maybe with a lots practice, I will be able to make some music with violin, too... Come on! :D Don't worry! You are not alone! Sorry for my bad english!

  • thanks! i also play piano but then switched to guitar first, then violin :)

  • Your playing makes me wanna die...

I'm sorry i'm playing just one week right now and you just made me deaf.

almost everything you do is wrong get a teacher get a book or something!!

buy metheronom, you play without ryhtem.

the only thing I feel sorry for are your neighbors, really sorry for bad comment but how can you do that for your self for three weeks?!

good luck anyway learning violin alone is brave so RESPECT! but please buy a book or find a teacher.

  • the last song was meant to be a joke. i knew i couldn't play it well so that i put an oops message there. it's meant to complete the story on how beginner i was.

  • is that a giuseppi?

  • wow that sounds like me cuz omsetimes whenever i play i can hear the squeaky sound

WOW! second-hand violin for only 40 bucks!! wow thats like a bargain. well yeah it may b second hand but it' like in perfect condition and it like so brad new!!! ur lucky for finding that!!

  • hehe maybe coz it's made in china.. the new one only costs 100bucks..

  • OMG OMG OMG I LIKE UR SONGS U PLAY!!!! :D its really cheap how much u said ur violin cost o.o LOL

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • Tilt your bow AWAY from you and keep your wrist away from the violin.

  • well, this is my question because when i saw experienced violin players, they tilt the bow both away from or towards the player. when i asked them, they said that they do it naturally, without thinking. :) so i'm just trying to be as natural as possible..

  • yeah I saw them too. I had my violin for a month without a teacher and I also tried all sorts of songs by ear. then I got a teacher, she made me use the bow flat on all the strings and made sure all the tone is constant for easy songs like this. I guess its for me to improve bow control for beginners like me.

  • thanks for your comment! yes i really have to focus on bow control..

  • I've read on violin forums that during the first 2 years with a teacher, you learn how to control the bow and that it's only after that you begin to play cool songs. XD

I bought a new violin from a Quebecois luthier and I wanted to do like you, to learn from youtube but everybody told me to at least, take a few courses to be sure not to get bad habbits.

  • The real reason they d thta is becasue tey have more control so the thing wont slide off

  • and...sorry but i'm an old-school and kopnservative violinist (playing now for over 10 years already)...please look for a good teacher. than you'd make much more successes and you can be sure that you learn it right^^

but nevermind...it was definitely good for only three weeks of practise...and without a teacher^^

  • oh...and...5+^^

  • your bow is not eer...how i say it in english...streched/spanned enough?

just for my opinion....i really wouldn't play with a that less spanned bow^^

and...how pinkyachi already said...a little bit natural space between your fingers (right hand)and...you should move them a little bit more up...hope you understand, my english sin't that good...^^

  • Not bad, not bad at all. :]

Your right hands should be in a more natural position with natural spacing between the fingers.

Your wrist should not be touching that little spot at the bottom of neck.

Other than that, keep practicing! :)

  • thanks! i'll fix my right hand!

the wrist is not touching anything.. it's just the camera angle :) if you see my other video from different angle..

  • Oh, okay. Sorry. xD

  • ben chan has really cool videos on youtube that you could learn from, check it out if you haven't already. and good luck with the violin.

  • thanks! i've checked them but the level is for people who already knew the basics.

  • dude, by any chance did you bought on amazon? i bought mine from amazon and the violin was $49.99 a 4x4 black violin and the strings kept breaking.

  • this violin is pretty good. but the E string did break and now i have to replace it..

  • i didn't buy it in amazon. it was in my local city someone put up an ad in a free ad website. i met him at train station to exchange money & violin :)

  • you are a lucky bastard

  • turn you bow so the hair is facing you. drop your left arm just a bit so it's more comfortable.

don't second guess yourself. play confident even if it is the wrong note.

you have good potential keep preacticing

rotate your left hand so the side of your index finger isn't touching the neck.

lift your violin a bit higher so your elbow isn't so close to your side.

  • tighten the bow a little more

  • thanks for the input! i will!

  • wow, you're so good!

  • I use you video for learning, but i can't play the second part of "sound of music"...

  • hehehe you need to listen to the real song. maybe you can listen it from the movie or soundtrack album. it was difficult for me that time. i need more exercise.

  • hey! can you do the outer senshi transformation song? Vanessa Mae plays that song with her violin...totally awesome. i am waiting for get mine (my violin) and practice and practice to get it right! on here write (sailor moon-All Transformation) please dude can you do that??

  • hi, i don't know that song ^^;;

    so i can't write it..

  • Hi , i had my first violin lesson on saturday i get one every saturday an hour for 20 quid Im enjoying it so far cant wait to get my videos up my goal is to play classical music.

    from Louise

  • hi louise, good that you have a lesson. i'm too busy to have one, so i'm learning it myself :)

  • great! i thought of selling off my electric guitar for a violin >.> then I wanna do the same thing like you... see how far I can go without lessons lol

  • Wow! I wish i could play like this, n jut started to learn this week and i can't even play one song...

  • your really good 4 a begginer! u must have an amazing teacher. Ive been playing 4 12 years and its hard to see talent like that anywhere.

  • I'm playing the violin as long as you do. I'm playing some children's songs, too.

But first you have to get used to the sound of the first intervalls!! It doesn't take long, when you've already done some music before.

But it's really necessary!! By then you may throw away your markings on the violin and only then you hear the wonderful sound! And after this, you mayy begin with the children's songs and after two times playing you're through it.

  • hi marie, thanks for the tips!

  • That is REAL good for the amount of time, but here's things to work on in the future.

    1. Your bow grip.

    2. I seriously think your bow needs to be tightened. You do this by first, locating the silver thingy at the back of the bow, then moving it clockwise.

You're doing an awesome job. Keep playing, and you'll get really good someday.

  • hi seth, thanks for the tips about bow grip! yeah it's a used violin. i hope it's good enough..

  • Pretty good man, for three weeks :D. I've played for 8-9 years, and you are getting there :D

  • For a beginner you are getting good, and after week 3 you can definately see an improvement.

    Keep trying.

    Good luck

  • thank you for your encouragement! ^___^

  • Just keep practicing and you will see better playing.

  • thanks for your encouragement!

  • Don't take the following, the wrong way. The fiddle is not like the guitar, sure anyone can learn to strum a few chords on a guitar over the weekend..but the fiddle (or violin)takes ALOT of skill to play, and if you don't play something, exactly right, it sounds like crap. My advice is not to play for anyone until you master a song perfectly, then move on to other songs. If this doesn't work out, try the mandolin..it uses the same chords as a fiddle without the tricky bowing techniques.

  • it is why alot of students never make it as a violinist. When people take up to learn something they want to learn then all the really need is encouragement. Thanks

  • I fully support anybody who wants to learn any instrument, I just don't humour them and say "oo thats great" when really it sounds like a cat choking to death..because they actually think it's good and they don't try to change it to make it right. Same with children, don't encourage the wrong thing just because it's cute.

  • I follow ya. Cheers

  • coool. I also want to buy a cheap violin and learn from books and youtube! There's some nice looking fancy violins on ebay I think I'm gonna get one for $50.

  • if you really want one you wont have to go to ebay. it will come to you. most rightly from someone in your own family. just inquire around town and the folks in your family. that is where mine came from. My Aunt Martha.

  • good idea...I don't think my cousin is ready to part with his violin...eh..well, at least if I buy one, I can choose my own. I hope I can get a stradivarius copy. there's a clip of it on youtube and it's so good.

  • Mainly, you should observe the way you put your right hand in the bow. Be careful with the little finger...

    Relax!

  • Hello. I am happy to see more violin player trying to learn watching other, like a lot of us. I hope you keep this wonderful and funny hobby.

  • Very good!!

I use videos in you tube for learning too!!

  • coooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll....................................
