Joan Sutherland sings "Tornami a vagheggiar" from Haendel's Alcina - LIVE!

Certainly the greatest rendition of this aria ever recorded....I heard her in 1979 perform this as her opening aria in a recital in Ann Arbor MI...she forgot the words and had to start over!!! Richard brought the music and plunked it down in front of her. She was charming and funny and then proceeded to blow the roof off the auditorium with her performance. There will never ever be another one like her.

This gives a decent idea of what her singing of this aria was like in the sixties - the TV clips are too aggressively recorded. But you had to be in the house for the full impact. At the extraordinary Zeffirelli production at Covent Garden, at the end of a long evening, she sang it as an encore to the whole show. You left walking on air.

Hi Hako2004 - I know you are a great admirer of Joan, as I am. Yahoo Groups[Joan Sutherland] is reporting that Joan is "gravely ill" again. I can find nothing on the net about this. Have you heard anything about our dear Joan?

Someone replied to a post of mine recently to say Richard Bonynge had mentioned DJS had heart problems and may require surgery, but I also have searched and been able to find nothing on this. I think from news articles on google RB was in London this week to receive an award. Were DJS gravely ill it does seem unlikely he would have travelled, although London to Geneva is only a 90 minute flight!
