  • Yes scabs need work too. But the role they play hurts all workers. When companies bust unions, wages are suppressed for ALL workers. So scabs, while in need of work, are hurting the working class

  • scabs need work too idiot, screw the unions. its the gun thugs that are the trouble not the scabs or workers

  • @macditty Yet scabs are crossing picket lines and helping give the company its profits in a time where the union is vulnerable.

  • @MikeCDawg this is about so much more thn a 'scab' taking a job, this is about union corruption, politics, murder for hire, and money. the money the scabs get is nothing but for a lot of them they have a shady past that might stop them from getting a good paying job so they have to scab while your union screws everyone on the deal they cut

  • A really great film. Those women were tough - I'd hate to run into them on a bad day. Lois rocked!

  • Everyone should see this film. It's been running on the IFC channel on cable. There's no narration. Only the words and actions of the miners and their families are heard. The people tell the entire story. It's a unique and very interesting film.

  • if there is a southern person out there that can explain to me what sudie crusenburg

says in the full length movie (google video harlan county usa) i would appreciate it

it is at 1 hour and 30 seconds - something about corn oil light and stove irons

  • @vontrop Hi. I can't tell you what Sudie was talking about, but that's not a "corn oil light", it's a "coal oil light". Coal oil lights were common in the poor parts of the country, not just the south. I grew up in central Illinois and we burned it for light when I was a kid as we had no electricity. It smelled bad when you poured it in the lamp and worse when it burned! :)

  • What pisses me off about this kind of shit is the glib excuse that "The Mafia controls the Unions". Nice touching story; reads well. Makes you want to proudly never join a Union and work for shitty wages under shitty conditions. NOT! And the police (and in some cases the Guard) that are called out to protect business under the guise of protecting the citizens.

  • @cochranexyz lol some places is all u can do i live in harlan nd what can u do start stuff like nyc peaple aint infournute like other peaple harlan is like harlan and nouthin cant change it .

  • I have Done this

  • @WillBackbone you clearly were on the bus left behind ... according to others the unions of the 60s and 70s were full of corruption and the Mafia ... you're the same ole swill different decade

  • WOW!!! GREAT DOC!!!

  • If it was up to Companies-- and Republicans in Policy In General--------The American Laborer-- would still be makin $2.oo an hour right now-=========George Bush and his Clowns Like Cheeney Too==========If I had A Hair On My Head That Wasn't a Union Hair=======I Would Pull It from my head and stomp it on the ground!

  • The Republican Administrations have had a Policy for YEARS AN YEARS to try To Rob, and Stop The Social Securtiy System, and all Retirements In General. Show Me a Democrat Boss or Company Official-- an I will Show You Someone Which Treats His Workers Like He Wants To Be Treated----------------

  • Unions are nothing like this these days. They are filled with corruption and theft. All the union does is pit employee against company. Unions have ruined American auto manufacturing, almost all Manufacturing has been ruined by Unions. The days of a worker getting paid $40 an hour to watch a machine are over, America can't afford people to have those type jobs. The real hard working ppl are the ones who start a business from scratch take the risks and those ppl supply jobs & write your paychecks.

  • Excellent movie, everyone who opposes the union need to watch this

  • God bless the people and shame on the scabs:

  • What a fabulous story! The documentarian was right: those women were strong.

  • good film
