only on youtube will you see paid firefighters talking down to paid fire fighters. Around here there is always at least a class a year that has to be bought new gear because they were trained to hard. Im not saying that makes the difference between volunteer fire fighting and paid fire fighting, but we should not be arguing. We should be comparing our training ways

I'm willing to put anything on the line to say that anyone who bashes on a firefighter and claims to be a firefighter, really isn't one. The whole paid vs volunteer thing isn't that big anymore. More and more these large paid departments are realizing that at times they need to help of these smaller volunteer companies. No REAL firefighter bashes on anyone. Just remember guys and girls, we ALL wear the same uniform and do the same job.

Hey im 18 and looking to be a firefighter. Im going to get an associates in EMT/Firescience. besides that and ofcourse volunteer work, what would be other things to help me get ready and prepared both mentally and physically, and ofcourse ways to be appealing to departments and be hired?
@cldntthinkof1 It all depends on where your located. A lot of useful information can be found at the local fire dept. see if they have a ride a long program and do it. it's a good way to get your foot in the door and to get to know the fire guys and gals! Best of luck!
@cldntthinkof1 If you want to make sure you will get a job, a lot of fire departments around here will almost instantly hire you if you continue your education further and get paramedic. Its a lot more work for not a lot more pay but it will be as sure shot as you can get here. Do a lot of cardio work, and also lifting. Check the departments at which you are thinking about applying to, about how their CPAT works. Many will even have videos of their CPAT. Practice interviewing skills as well.
Why must almost every single firefighter video be turned into a debate on whether or not firefighters are awesome/worth our money or whatever else is debated? Can't you just look at it and go "hm I don't like firefighters I think I'll skip that video..." Is it really that hard? Im a volunteer firefighter and i would just like to say that no matter where you live, paid or not; we are all brothers. My dept. runs on adverage 450 calls a year. So yeah i have seen every side of the fire service. I do agree some guys walk arround saying i am a firefighter so im a bad ass now. Im not that way. I do what i do because its who i am; it a passion; a desire to serve and to help those in need. So for those of you who want to be heros; you are in the wrong line of work.

@bfdfireguy33 Im a volunteer and yes I have been in a real fire, on the 300 block of west main, 60th and ranch rd, oh and mutual aid of the department south of us for a garage fire where a 30lb Co2 tank exploded injuring our chief.. but Im more of a 10-45 guy, I like extrication. I have been around the fire service since I was born, my dad retired after 25 years of paid and volunteer fire fighting, and the state fire marshal for 6 years. @bfdfireguy33 I am not a firefighter but my husband is a volunteer firefighter and he and his men do just as much as paid departments. In small towns that is all they have are volunteers to be there when they call for an emergency. I have respect for all firefighters paid or not. Volunteer or not you are all called from family, go on small amounts of sleep, witness grusume events at times and all of you risk your lives for people you don't know. You shouldn't degrade volunteeers b/c one day

Fast Food employee makes more than me.....It's not about the money!!!! 15 years I've beeen paid and have came close to losing my life 3 times and yet I have never given a thought to doing anything else. In MS paid and vol. firefighters learn from the same book, but the paid firemen are required to go through the academy training. Vol. only have to get the vol. certification through testing through the book and a one day field day of evolution training at the academy to test for skills.

@dragonknight31 oh no doubt paid guys are under paid, but less than a fast food employee seems a bit crazy. for my vol dept the only certification we need is firefighter 1, our department requires us to have ff1 to be considered & used as an interior attack firefighter. my set of new guys just finished & have graduation sat night. guys who haven't yet gone through ff school are fire ground helpers. i think the book we learned from was the IFSTA essentials of firefighting.

Awsome awsome video. I've been in the service for almost 18 years now. All this time has been by choice a vollunteer. I've had children die in my arms, watched adults take their last breathe, and even stepped through a man's chest that died in a housefire. What's my payment? When you see someone in a nasty wreck that you have cut a car out from around......a few months later they see you in a store, start crying and say "thank you". No money can pay for that.
being a ff is more than fighting fire its also about the nasty car wrecks at 2 in the morning, sick people barfing on you and all the other gut wrenching stuff you see and are exposed to. sometimes the worst are dead bodies. thats one for me when a 3/4 ton dodge ran over a scooter and hearing the truck driver wailing in the ambulance when told about the lady. i had problems with that for a few days after that and a song on the radio that i heard earlier that day reminds of that day.sad day
i've risked my life 3 days after i turned 18 on a woods fire and passed out on the engines tailboard. then training one night turned bad when our tire blow out and we were meeting a car head-on but missed it luckly. i'm proud to say i risk my life to save others out here.

for all the young ones out there, if you want to become a firefighter join young!!!! at the age of 15 you can join as a junior firefighter in most Vol. fire companies, you have no idea how much it helps, and its a lot of fun, it helped me out so much
I am a volunteer firefighter for bauerstown volunteer fire department (Pittsburgh) There have been 7 generations of firefighters before me, I'vve just recently got my gear, havent been on my first call yet, but I love every second of it... I'm a junior fire fighter there but I love it, if i had a chance to do something else, Id stay with fire fighting. I'm a person that loves to help people, do my best to help those around me.

I want to be a firefighter, where should I start? I'm 16 years old and I really have no muscles and I'm out of shape completely. Once I graduate high school I will apply to this program at my community college, it is about 2 years and you get to live with your fellow students in a dorm, hopefully I get accepted the first time around, but there are other people with more experience then me, I don't know if that will affect anything.

im currently a firefighter in Goldston NC and i love it. im going to the academy as soon as i get my 2 year degree in 6 months and god do i love every second of it. every man and woman in my department i trust with my life and would gladly lay mine down to save them cause they would do the same for me.

only on youtube will you see paid firefighters talking down to paid fire fighters. Around here there is always at least a class a year that has to be bought new gear because they were trained to hard. Im not saying that makes the difference between volunteer fire fighting and paid fire fighting, but we should not be arguing. We should be comparing our training ways

I'm willing to put anything on the line to say that anyone who bashes on a firefighter and claims to be a firefighter, really isn't one. The whole paid vs volunteer thing isn't that big anymore. More and more these large paid departments are realizing that at times they need to help of these smaller volunteer companies. No REAL firefighter bashes on anyone. Just remember guys and girls, we ALL wear the same uniform and do the same job.

Hey im 18 and looking to be a firefighter. Im going to get an associates in EMT/Firescience. besides that and ofcourse volunteer work, what would be other things to help me get ready and prepared both mentally and physically, and ofcourse ways to be appealing to departments and be hired?

@cldntthinkof1 It all depends on where your located. A lot of useful information can be found at the local fire dept. see if they have a ride a long program and do it. it's a good way to get your foot in the door and to get to know the fire guys and gals! Best of luck!

@cldntthinkof1 If you want to make sure you will get a job, a lot of fire departments around here will almost instantly hire you if you continue your education further and get paramedic. Its a lot more work for not a lot more pay but it will be as sure shot as you can get here. Do a lot of cardio work, and also lifting. Check the departments at which you are thinking about applying to, about how their CPAT works. Many will even have videos of their CPAT. Practice interviewing skills as well.

Im a volunteer firefighter and i would just like to say that no matter where you live, paid or not; we are all brothers. My dept. runs on adverage 450 calls a year. So yeah i have seen every side of the fire service. I do agree some guys walk arround saying i am a firefighter so im a bad ass now. Im not that way. I do what i do because its who i am; it a passion; a desire to serve and to help those in need. So for those of you who want to be heros; you are in the wrong line of work.

@bfdfireguy33 Im a volunteer and yes I have been in a real fire, on the 300 block of west main, 60th and ranch rd, oh and mutual aid of the department south of us for a garage fire where a 30lb Co2 tank exploded injuring our chief.. but Im more of a 10-45 guy, I like extrication. I have been around the fire service since I was born, my dad retired after 25 years of paid and volunteer fire fighting, and the state fire marshal for 6 years. @bfdfireguy33 I am not a firefighter but my husband is a volunteer firefighter and he and his men do just as much as paid departments. In small towns that is all they have are volunteers to be there when they call for an emergency. I have respect for all firefighters paid or not. Volunteer or not you are all called from family, go on small amounts of sleep, witness grusume events at times and all of you risk your lives for people you don't know. You shouldn't degrade volunteeers b/c one day

Fast Food employee makes more than me.....It's not about the money!!!! 15 years I've beeen paid and have came close to losing my life 3 times and yet I have never given a thought to doing anything else. In MS paid and vol. firefighters learn from the same book, but the paid firemen are required to go through the academy training. Vol. only have to get the vol. certification through testing through the book and a one day field day of evolution training at the academy to test for skills.

@dragonknight31 oh no doubt paid guys are under paid, but less than a fast food employee seems a bit crazy. for my vol dept the only certification we need is firefighter 1, our department requires us to have ff1 to be considered & used as an interior attack firefighter. my set of new guys just finished & have graduation sat night. guys who haven't yet gone through ff school are fire ground helpers. i think the book we learned from was the IFSTA essentials of firefighting.

Awsome awsome video. I've been in the service for almost 18 years now. All this time has been by choice a vollunteer. I've had children die in my arms, watched adults take their last breathe, and even stepped through a man's chest that died in a housefire. What's my payment? When you see someone in a nasty wreck that you have cut a car out from around......a few months later they see you in a store, start crying and say "thank you". No money can pay for that.

being a ff is more than fighting fire its also about the nasty car wrecks at 2 in the morning, sick people barfing on you and all the other gut wrenching stuff you see and are exposed to. sometimes the worst are dead bodies. thats one for me when a 3/4 ton dodge ran over a scooter and hearing the truck driver wailing in the ambulance when told about the lady. i had problems with that for a few days after that and a song on the radio that i heard earlier that day reminds of that day.sad day

i've risked my life 3 days after i turned 18 on a woods fire and passed out on the engines tailboard. then training one night turned bad when our tire blow out and we were meeting a car head-on but missed it luckly. i'm proud to say i risk my life to save others out here.

parents they have scholarships plus they pay for Firefighter 1 & 2 classes you take at community colleges.
They take care of their own.

I want to be a firefighter, where should I start? I'm 16 years old and I really have no muscles and I'm out of shape completely. Once I graduate high school I will apply to this program at my community college, it is about 2 years and you get to live with your fellow students in a dorm, hopefully I get accepted the first time around, but there are other people with more experience then me, I don't know if that will affect anything.

@PepsiPope become a jr firefighter at ur nearest firhouse like i did and i was out of shape untill i started but if u live in a city most likely they dont offer it but try never give up . good luck. 343 gone but never forgotten

some initiative to go out and work out every day for the rest of your life. You may not want to go and workout but that is when it's best. You'll feel so good and if you do this a little everyday about a year or two you will be ripped.

im currently a firefighter in Goldston NC and i love it. im going to the academy as soon as i get my 2 year degree in 6 months and god do i love every second of it. every man and woman in my department i trust with my life and would gladly lay mine down to save them cause they would do the same for me.

hey, brotherhood and all that crap... all i pointed out was that I don't see endless u tube videos of plumbers or mechanics or nurses etc all yapping about how 'brave ' they are, 2 hours of sleep (that's a laugh) and on and on.
Get used to a simple fact... you put out fires. (yahoo). You couldn't live without the aforementioned. but society can live without the self promotion you crowd doll out.

imma fire explorer and so far its been amazing!!! i cant wait untill my first academy!! im soo excited!! i used to think that for a girl i was strong but i was crazy 4 thinkin that hahah what i have done to get ready for the academy has pushed my strength to the limit!!!

@ryanlovestosnowboard I am on my way to be a firefighter... taking college classes right this moment. Your absolutely right its hot. I am a fire explorer so i know lots about firefighting. I have had 2 real structure fires and lots of training fires. Its pretty intense! Good luck on becoming a firefighter. Its serious business. Screw what all the haters have to say they dont know anything until they get hands on experience. I bet they dont even have the guts to run most of the medical calls.

Gimme a break.Never seen so many self praising clips about one's job. Listen buddy, every time i get in a plane, my life is literally in the hands of the guy at the controls. I could go on.
