At the paramedic level, they make you know all the different names of strokes, like Pontine, lateral and a whole host of others I can't remember, especially since I'm sick now.
I remember pontine b/c the word stuck in my head for some reason. But there are about 8 other types, and we have to know them all. I'm sure your wife remembers them all. I have to read them all the time, b/c we hardly get any stroke calls.
Fantastic video! I came across the knanacademy channel when I was doing my French Revolution exam last year. I rediscovered it today and found this particular video. Loved learning about it, very interesting. I had a Haemorrhagic stroke. If anyone has an AVM and going to have it treated by Stereotactic Radiosurgery, check my video! :)
on your main Youtube page, under what playlist are these videos under? Biology? Organic Chem? please let me know so i can watch all these...you make is really simple to understand and i would like to watch all of them. Thanks.
You wouldn't believe all the different types of strokes there were at the Paramedic level. I used to be an EMT-I. When I became a paramedic, we had to learn at LEAST 8 different types of strokes, by name and not general type: eg, pontine stroke.
It was a task so daunting, I was actually afraid I wasn't going to remember all the signs and symptoms for all the different strokes.
I haven't been that overwhelmed since I learned how to tie all the rescuers' knots that firefighters have to know.
Patients always think that the bleeding associated with a hemorrhagic stroke is the reason that dysfuncion occurs when the real reason is the downstream circulation is decreased.
@spazzmonster Bleeding does cause dysfunction. A haemmorhagic stroke exerts its effects through rupture of the involved blood vessel thereby depriving tissue of nutrients and oxygen (causing necrosis- which is the consequence of infarction). The presence of blood in the brain acts as space occupying lesion and directly compresses brain tissue (and other blood vessels) causing further damage. Hope that explains.
Fascinating. I would like to know (in your future video) which type of stroke is easier to recover from, or is easier for doctors to take control of. I would think, either way, it is vital to take care of within minutes and would guess that a hemorrhagic stroke would be easier to deal with by releasing pressure to the brain by stopping the bleeding and removing the excess blood.
@starward Recovery after stroke can be very difficult. In terms of best chances of recovery this depends on what part and how much of the brain has been damaged. This depends on what blood vessel was affected. The Bamford classification of stroke is widely used to determine prognosis. Btw. lowering the BP too quickly can be very dangerous post-haemmorhagic stroke (due to cerebral autoregulation) and can lead to further ischaemia.
If Sal used a scale of his brain it wouldn't fit on the screen because he's freakin SMART! (and yes brain size DOES matter at least according to one scientific opinion)
Strokes are brutal, thanks for the info. I wish I can watch this anytime my friends offer to go to a fast food joint, then I wouldnt want to eat anything
lol when I watch your video's they make me feel more smart because I know lots of things you tell already. So Instead of watching the video's about things I don't know, I watch the video's with the things that I already know, just because then I can say. Haha, I already knew that!
lol jk some words I didn''t know because I'm not english...
I think I may enjoy revising my AS biology course now :D
