this looks like the easiest sport in the world we used to play this in gym class and i was absolutely nasty. Too bad i had to settle for first team all american in baseball :( lol
1) Ras is a good player but only won cuz Sun Jun was injured.
2) Showed lack of class post game by not shaking Sun Jun's hand and celebrating like he just won by merit.
One thing I've noticed about many Dane's is they'll take a win anyway they can get it, and make themselves believe their deity, their saviour, their god Peter Gade is the best player that has ever walked the earth.
I don´t think that SJ was injured only tired, but even though he actually was injured what should PR do? Loose the game on purpose...
About the lack of class. I can´t see that he did anything wrong. I think that most (european) players would react just like PR did if they won a WC. It wasn´t exactly like SJ was staying on court and PR ignoring him. Try to imagine if you won - won you run to the net as the first thing?I think not
@superkupper "I don´t think that SJ was injured only tired"... SJ had a cramp, he can hardly walk let alone run or sprint. I'm just saying PR won because of this, and was basically very lucky SJ was not at 100%. And to prove it was a fluke win, PR hasn't won anything since. Ofcourse they'll take the win but anyone who care only about winning and not about being the best is only fooling themselves, its like getting 100% on a test but can't do the job.
@lg123xyz Actually we kind of agree, but we just look at it from a different angle. I don´t see a cramp as an injury but as a result of "bad" shape (that´s why I wrote that he was tired). That leads my to the point that PR wasn´t lucky - he was in a better fysical condition. I admit that he didn´t win much after the championships but he suffered a lot from real injuries:-) and had to stop his career because of this. I think that it is a valid "excuse"?
@superkupper That is a valid point that PR was perhaps in better physical condition that day, however... he did suffer "real injuries" which is sort of contradictory to that very same point :) if he was in better shape then he should've won more titles therefore, he was in better shpae "that day" and it just so happens that SJ had a cramp "that day" that's why I said PR was lucky... you see what I mean?
@lg123xyz Not exactly but it is not that important to me. My point of defending PR is/was to make it clear that he was one of the best players at that time when he didn´t suffer from injuries. I guess that we can both agree to that statement?
Besides that I´m interested in "a lot of danes will take a win anyway they can get it"? Could you tell me a little more about that and perhaps give a few examples of this? I actually think that the players I know are realistic and shows good sportsmanship.
@superkupper Yes I agree with you that PR was one of the best during that brief period, there were 2 months where I'd even say he was THE best in the world. A perfect example of "a lot of danes will take a win anyway they can get it" would be Mathias Boe/Morgensen men's doubles team, their delay of service tactics (more Boe) where they pretend to be ready then start to fidget at the net in an attempt to throw off their opponents rhythm. I think that's terrible sportsmanship.
@lg123xyz Oh sure I agree on that but now you gave me one example (but a pretty good one). I guess that we just have to accept it as a part of the game. They are no way near the only pair who does this. It doesn´t make it better but I think it shows that a lot of players (not only the danes/this one danish couple) are going to do "whatever" they can to be the best.
@superkupper Well that's the only pair I've seen consistently who has done this and again, its mostly Boe, I've seen him fall down after being hit by a shuttle - even the announcers said "surely it couldn't have hurt that much" - and if you watch many of their matches they do this over and over, and I've watched quite a number of matches and don't recall any other team do this as often as they do, maybe once or twice but they do it all the time and to almost every team EXCEPT Paaske / Rasmussen
@superkupper Yes, I saw that entire match... but he didn't use any bad tactics, he only has himself to blame for blowing 8 match points lol I admit it was bad sportsmanship but he didn't try to win badly he just lost the match badly and refused to wear that goofy hat :) But I think he has since cooled down a lot and now after the Gold in Asian Games, he has finally won every major title and I think he's at peace and knows he's one of the best if not the greatest to ever play... you agree?
@superkupper Also just so you don't think its a race thing I also think Ji Xinpeng was lucky in winning Olympic Gold, here's a guy that came out of no where with no pressure and goes on to beat everyone. Then we never hear from him before or since.
If he was seriously injured he couldnt move as fast as he does, and if he was cramping up, suck it because he was not fit enough and Rasmussen beat him fairly.
Sun Jun is tough. You would think that Tauffik would have quited the match, wouldn't you? Actually, Tauffik quited the semifinal match in the 2003 world championships, when he is leading the game, because of an claimed injury. cxyian was right, and Peter was lucky to win this game. Peter is a good player, but wasn't expected to be a world champion. Last year, a pair of danes won the mixed doubles title in the world championship, and they were never one of the best pairs.
Sometimes it is just luck. Sun Jun is kind of short (for a singles player) and doesn't have a strong enough body. His coach trained him very very hard (same coach as LIn Dan's), so he always has serious injuries. Otherwise, he will not retire from his badminton career so early, and may achieve more. For the record, he did came back two years later and won the world tile in 1999. Sun Jun is tough and plays smart games, and he earned reputations for that.
During an interview, Lin Dan said Sun Jun is one of his idols. Now Sun Jun is the head coach of the best badminton club in China. His wife is Ge Fei, best women's doubles players ever (world champion and 2-time Olympic champions, never lost a single match from 1996 to 1999)
Speaking of Peter Rasmussen, I don't think he is a great player. Morten Frost, Peter Gade are great players from Denmark. Ironically both of them never got a world title. Somebody mentioned the men's doubles final of the 2003 world championship. which is won by a pair of Danes Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen. It is the same thing: good players and a lot of luck. They didn't play that well before that and after that.
@fqian88 Jonas Rasmussen.......... didn't he like won the All England at the age of 34. Oh yeah and he beat the Olympic champion Markis Kido in the process.
i did not see set 1 but in set 2 sun jun had to run and work more than the dane and thats the reason for his leg-injury. personally i think its very sad because i wanted to see more of those two performing at their best. but its obviously impossible to play over one and a half hour at this level without hurting yourself ;)
all credit to peter for making a worldclass player like sun jun working soooo hard!
pfffff sun jun was a game-playing baby... and he didn't even make the attempt to shake Peter's hand at the end of the match... an embarrassment to an honest gentleman's sport.
Ras won this match because he was simply a better badminton player and the fact that Sun Jun just got tired, lazy, down on himself, and eventually obviously tried playing head games about his "injury", just proves that Ras is also a better human being over all.
Looks like u are a great Ras fan. I won't deny that ras was a good player, or a good human being as you've said. I have never seen sun jun playing so badly, so clearly he's injured. You are definitely not a good one as you said that sun jun was playing head games bout his injury. SHAMEFUL. And what's wrong when i said rasmussen was lucky? he indeed admit that he's lucky, cos he's never in sun jun's level!
Sun Jun and everyone else was lucky Peter Rasmussen got his career injured by serious foot injuries. Otherwise Rasmussen would have had a beteer career than Peter Gade.
BULLSHIT!!! HE HUGGED SOMEONE, RAN AROUND THE COURT IN A VICTORY LAP, AND WAS HEADING STRAIGHT FOR THE NET WITH HIS HAND UP TO MEET SUN JUN (WHO WAS AT THE NET) BUT SUN JUN STARTED WALKING AWAY IGNORING PETER AS HE APPROACHED.
INCLUDING THE STALLING AND ATTITUDE, HE WAS A SORE LOSER EVEN BEFORE HE LOST!!!!
What a lovely guy, that Rasmussen. But, too bad Sun Jun was injured.

Take a look at "the craziest matchpoint wins ever"
It´s not to defend the danish double, but as you can see it´s far from all people who shows great sporsmanship on court

He's also a far superior athlete to Sun Jun.
Ras won this match because he was simply a better badminton player and the fact that Sun Jun just got tired, lazy, down on himself, and eventually obviously tried playing head games about his "injury", just proves that Ras is also a better human being over all.

ras makes cooler war faces than sun jun. sun jun looks cold and snotty.
i bet ras smells better too.
..and ras definately has a way bigger. . . sweet spot.
yur pro'lly right though. I haven't even seen sun jun play... but I think the danes have the best players of all time.
