For example since the 1996-1997 season till today the league has had 3 teams score more than 300 goals in a season. 3 teams people, in well over a decade. During the 1988-89 season their were 10 teams that had over 300 goals and several more that were very close. To compare offensive stats of a defenseman from that era to this era is completely unfair as the league produced hundreds more goals and assists then. Even the best defensive players now struggle to get a +30 in this era.
I just illistrated that people were winning the plus minus award in 1989-90 (the midpoint of Bourque's career) with a +38. In the entire decade of the 1990's, 3 people won the best plus minus award with +50 or better. The same was true in this past decade Pronger, Forsberg and Hejdukall @ +52. In the 80's, only 3 players OTHER than Gretzky or his linemates, were better: Joe Mullen, Mark Howe, & Charlie Huddy who was on Edmonton and benefitted from Gretzky's gaudy numbers.
Plus, the 80's were a score a minute league and until the mid 90's it remained. I mean 50 goals was far more common then. Having the 2 highest point totals doesn't mean you are the stronger conference, especially since you beat up on the weaker teams in the conference and in your division. For example, The Chicago Cubs had the best record in all of baseball last season. However the American League east is the best division. Boston, NY, Tampa, and Toronto all had to play each other 18 times each, so they will lose some playing against each other. The Cubs played Cincy, Pitt, Houston, Brewers and St.L-weaker teams!

Nicklas Lidstrom is the 4th best defenseman in NHL history, but don't even put him in a sentence with Bobby Orr or Doug Harvey, and he certainly isn't as good as Ray Bourque. Bourque was a much better hitter, scorer, AND a better passer than Lidstrom, and was better at breaking up odd man rushes. The only aspect of Lidstroms game better than Bourque's is skating.

No, I believe they do help with hand/eye coordination. Maybe not in a metaphysical sense but they certainly allow for a more confident approach to sports. Hence, a being in the zone type feeling that heightens awareness. I remember while taking them being able to do many things better, from shooting baskets better to hitting racquetballs off the glass more accurately. They add a certain amount of confidence that cant be explained chemically (as far as I know)

For example since the 1996-1997 season till today the league has had 3 teams score more than 300 goals in a season. 3 teams people, in well over a decade. During the 1988-89 season their were 10 teams that had over 300 goals and several more that were very close. To compare offensive stats of a defenseman from that era to this era is completely unfair as the league produced hundreds more goals and assists then. Even the best defensive players now struggle to get a +30 in this era.

I just illistrated that people were winning the plus minus award in 1989-90 (the midpoint of Bourque's career) with a +38. In the entire decade of the 1990's, 3 people won the best plus minus award with +50 or better. The same was true in this past decade Pronger, Forsberg and Hejdukall @ +52. In the 80's, only 3 players OTHER than Gretzky or his linemates, were better: Joe Mullen, Mark Howe, & Charlie Huddy who was on Edmonton and benefitted from Gretzky's gaudy numbers.

Having the 2 highest point totals doesn't mean you are the stronger conference, especially since you beat up on the weaker teams in the conference and in your division. For example, The Chicago Cubs had the best record in all of baseball last season. However the American League east is the best division. Boston, NY, Tampa, and Toronto all had to play each other 18 times each, so they will lose some playing against each other. The Cubs played Cincy, Pitt, Houston, Brewers and St.L-weaker teams!

East is definitely getting better, without doubt. But you really can't say that they're better than the West. San Jose only lost first round to the 8th seeded team mainly because of the absence of some of their top stars. Sharks, Ducks and Blackhawks all could have dropped the Pens, Caps, or Hurricanes.

You really must stop sniffing glue! Nicklas Lidstrom is the 4th best defenseman in NHL history, but don't even put him in a sentence with Bobby Orr or Doug Harvey, and he certainly isn't as good as Ray Bourque. Not only did Ray score 20 goals in a season 9 times and scored 19 twice, Lidstrom did it once. Bourque was a much better hitter, scorer, AND a better passer than Lidstrom, and was better at breaking up odd man rushes. The only aspect of Lidstroms game better than Bourque's is skating.

Nah, he's the best. Next to him is Larry Murphy. Bobby Orr was an offensive Dman, and can't play back nearly as well as Lidstrom. Ray Bourque? You kidding me? Top 10 at best. But Lidstrom is #1. Passing goes to Lidstrom, accuracy of shot is Lid's, breaking up odd man rushes would go to Lid's as well. Lidstrom would but up a high amount of goals as well if he played on a shitty team. But he has everyone on the ice with him capable of putting the puck in the back of the net.

Bourque has 410 goals compared to Lidstroms 228. You say that because Lidstrom had better scorers on his team, so his goals are fewer-well that should mean then that he should average more assists! Oh wait, he doesn't! If Lidstom plays 5 more years and scores 16 goals each season, he'd be more than 100 behind Bourque, or 25%! Bourque also has 1169 assists compared to 769 for Nick. If he gets 50 a year for 5 years, he'd be more than 150 behind Bourque! Your argument, like you, fails! LMAO

Chara changed the way other teams had to play, literally taking away half the ice on defense. He added 19 goals, and for a shutdown defender who is ALWAYS on the ice against the Ovechkins, Crosby's, and Malkins, a +23 is amazing

But that's only this year and even then Anaheim was one of the toughest #8 seeds ever and everyone knows it. For the last decade, Detroit had to scrape thru and sometimes lose to Edmonton, Anaheim, Calgary, Avs and Dallas who all went on to win cups. So, by your definition, Detroit should have far more Cups.

I get it completely! Coming into the season, Boston was expected to be a 5 or 6 seed and MAYBE win the first round of the playoffs. They stayed healthy luckily, unlike Montreal who was the favorite in the east.
What you don't grasp is that Boston has only lost once this decade as a preseason favorite...and it was in football when Brady hurt his ankle before the superbowl loss to the Giants. He was in a cast days before the game. Detroit? When did they win as a 45-1 underdog entering a season?

I wont defend Paul Colletti for punching Steve, and I went to grammar school with Paul's cousin Mark. Paul was a douche from Braintree, a neighboring town from mine. He was an asshole and probably still is.
Yzerman was in the wrong in this instance though regarding what happened to Lazarro. McCrimmon choked him unconscious after Yzerman reignited the altercation. Lazarro was not a dirty player, and never was at any point in his career. Detroit was mad that Lazarro killed Konstantinov!

I didn't just say they are for recovery, I said they are used to allow you to work out more. The steroids Clemens is alleged to have taken are Winstrol(a shredder) and HGH, a recovery drug. Most NFL players take D-Ball and other anabolic steroids...like Twist and Kordic took! (yes Twist was a roidhead)
Steroid DON'T help with hand eye coordination, but I agree they allow you to get the bat around quicker, which does improve your performance-so you're half right there!

No, I believe they do help with hand/eye coordination. Maybe not in a metaphysical sense but they certainly allow for a more confident approach to sports. Hence, a being in the zone type feeling that heightens awareness. I remember while taking them being able to do many things better, from shooting baskets better to hitting racquetballs off the glass more accurately. They add a certain amount of confidence that cant be explained chemically (as far as I know)

What you're referring to is the placebo effect. If I gave identical twins each pills, telling one of them he was taking a steroid, and the other it was just a sugar pill, the one who thought he took steroids thinks he performed better and that the pill helped!
The fact that both got sugar pills shows that there is a psychological advantage to thinking you cheated, but in reality, your physical performance wasn't improved! As I stated, steroids does improve strength and speed, not coordination.

Most teams will be able to have winning records now with the shootout format, but using the old system with no overtime and no shootout, going 28 straight years with a winning record was incomparable.
