shame about the production! He pleads to the couturiers but is no threat to them as he is the court jester, yet they draw their swords- no coward draws their sword on an unarmed man let alone an unarmed disabled jester... what a beautiful color to the voice! Hvorostovsky is an important singer and brings much to the interpretation of this role.
That position must be terrible for him while singing still he sings marvellously. Up to now my favourite Rigoletto used to be Ingvar Wixell in the Ponnelle-directed movie but this scene and DH's voice and acting foretells tragedy so strongly that it makes me shudder.
if only there was his Rigoletto DVD :)

Stand in front of a victrola and listen to Titta Ruffo. We now have a successor to the greatest Verdi baritone ever.

If this production will be available on DVD,it will be his best recording, apart from Boccanegra

The only baritone who could bring such powerfully ominous, and yet seductive Rigoletto.

Now is his time for Rigoletto
His voice became not just beautifull , but really dramatic
