"You can't keeping go up [in dynamics] - the piano has limitations" --- if I may so there are many pianists who forget this at times -- many many !!!!!
i saw him perform this a few months ago...it wasnt great but it was mostly the bad orchestra...he did a piano recital and ive never heard better liszt
You know, in my experience the more gifted the student the more demanding the teacher becomes. It's an acknowledgement of the student's ability to bring out the nuances lost on mere mortal students but readily assimilated and understood by those of transcendent ability.
I've totally attended a concert where Barry Douglas performed this concerto. I just came by this video on accident; it is so weird to see him get massively critiqued like this! Thanks for posting.
LOL, I kno what you mean, especially when you are part of a masterclass, you have to follow the suggestions of the masterclass teacher at that moment, I mean you can go home and screw off anything he didn't like about Bolet's suggestions, I luv Barry Douglas, but I guess he was young and ignorant.?
I think every student has a right to tell the teacher where he's coming from and see whether that's a really bad judgement or merely a difference in interpretation.
Its funny to see barry so young, compared to now, pushing 50. Still looks good for his age though, and still delivers on the keys. Keep it up mate, ur doing northern ireland proud to this day.
Oh no, I don't think Bolet had made an accurate comment at 7:40 for what the pianist played a rhythmic progression from 7:00. I think his accentuation was on the 2nd notes of the progression. While the "piano has limitations", so do all of the examiners' ears and memory.
Personally I find Douglas stiff, and felt Manz was putting more genuine passion into his playing, though they're all extremely boring compared with Bolet. Also Douglas has a very obvious attitude problem in this video, even though he clearly could learn something from Bolet! I've never been able to take Barry Douglas seriously ever since I saw him stop in mid performance in a live London concert just because he went wrong - that's lack of talent for you!
You are right, Douglas is stiff. And is spite of the fact that he won the Tchaikovsky Competition he never managed to sustain a respectable career -a sign of lack of real talent, hence determination.
Id say his career was pretty respectable;a westerner winning in moscow at the height of soviet corruption in competitive adjudication.Whats more he won the thing when he was only a couple of years out of college.Imagine the pressure on him to keep coming up with the goods,(look what happened to george best, another Belfast boy)
Hate to say it, but ALL piano competitions are corrupt, not just those in Moscow - have you never heard the stories of Fanny Waterman (chairman of the Leeds Competition) and how easily swayed she was my outside influences?
It is common knowledge that Bolets Piano was of a much higher qualtiy. This is obvious in the later stages of the masterclasses when the student piano is actually going out of tune. Not that Boulez can be dismissed as a justified critic of any pianist(you can be however). But this was 1983 when Douglas was just 23;his developent from this to the Tchaikowsky in 86 was pretty rapid-perhaps his responses to boulez comments where not instant, but you have to admit he came a long way in 3 years.
Bolet's preferred piano was Bechstein, not Steinway, so in fact he gave the students what was in his opinion the better instrument. I know Barry Douglas extremely the well by the way!!!

look at Bolet's facial expression @ 7:13 = wtf are you doing, kid?

Barry is acceptable. Bolet is transcendental.

I seen Barry perform at Bridewater in 2009 with some mates from RNCM. I didn't like it. He doesn't seem to play with enough passion for me.

I think douglas is one of the best of the bunch.. But you do get the impression that he's not to pushed sometimes about what bolet has to say..

dermotthefifth. Not a question of being pushed...a question of being able to receive advice.
