I love mysterious enigmatic songs like this. Being catholic, I thought that he was sing about the immaculate virgin or holy Mary Magdalen. But the truth is a little more prosaic than that. He wrote it in 1967 after a row with his then Girlfriend Cathy Etchingham.

She wrote her own biography Through Gypsy eyes or something. But I would have loved to have seen the version in the Albert Hall when he dedicated to his mother Lucille Hendricks. That would have been a very poignant version.

I watched his whole Monterey Festival set for the first time, I've only seen parts of it and a few songs not included on the movie and there is a part where he tells the audience that he loves them and then does this licking noise. But his eyes said everything, they looked like mine did 20 years ago when I was taking LSD. lol. The eyes never lie when you're on that stuff.
