It's just a gene and these aren't a species of their own and are not genetically bred. It's much like humans getting different eye color, although the chances of the lion coming out white is said to be 1 in 1,000 (both mother and father must carry the rare gene for this to happen) - they are no more endangered than normal lions :)

I don't want to fight you but I disagree. Breeding does not only alter colour, but affects every gene in the animal's body. By selecting you can change anything from colour to bone structure, and animals are indeed suffering for it. I'm thinking of the german shepherd show dogs which have been bred until their spines are curved and causes illness and pain for the individual animal.

Wether or not these are "perfect" animals, I'll let judge for yourself. Irresponsible breeding is never good.
