  • sry , im brazilian , to enter a vehicle is alt+ ?

  • Best part @ 9:10

  • This game just wants me to take it out on coke machines.

  • You do realize that it isnt a 9 minute tutorial? Its more like 6-7 minute tutorial.

  • LOL @ This concludes the easy stuf! hahahahahahaa

  • RunAwayScientist, you should have made the in game tutorial for this game :P

  • How is it possible people think this game is good? I mean it had a good concept and all, but the product...or all those who said the game is great, are just trolls :P

  • @bionicledragon This game is ace! ROFLCOPTOR!

  • This game was the "Crysis" of the 90's when It came out. It was too good for it's time. Epic game to play if you have a lot of free time and have no internet.

  • This is evil game, it hate humans.

  • i tried playing this years ago, i kept asking my dad if he took the instruction manual, but no, there was a 900 page PDF i had to read to learn how to play the game. that got me about 10 minutes in before i was demolished in a space battle and suddenly, my entire battlecruiser had crash landed on the planet below. So i got out, walked on the hull of my ship, and quickly realised that i seemed to be on a very large, very abandoned planet.

  • i don't get this game. can you actually travel to different planets? i mean, on one game, how massive is the map? and what is the ultimate goal? just destroy your enemies? also, the ai, is it good? do you control them? also, the mining thing? wtf i need to see gameplay of this, i don't want to buy this and find out i don't like it.

  • @zakyzeek bro the game sux... it has no meaning.. you can go to other planets but theres nothing on them. the goal is to figure out wtf your supposed to do and after a week you just play something else

  • @walmartian yeah, i kinda gave up. you have to be a super master nerd to know what you are doing, and even then, there is nothing exciting about it.

  • @zakyzeek have you ever played EVE Online? if not you should search "eve online butterfly effect" on youtube, its complicated space strategy like this game but its streamlined without all this redundancy

  • Best tutorial on the net... I wish you'd do more, but it seems you've already lost interest... :(

  • This game looks like a chore, i rather have my games fun to play

  • 4:53 roflcopter

  • This game had a lot of potential. The engine is just so flawed and buggy that it is unplayable to an extent.

  • Rather than third party modding, I'd rather Smart make sources for his older discontinued games open and let people do whateverthefuck they want to it in general. There's so much wasted potential there.

  • you know, i never really figured out how to evacuate people with the transporter and ive been playinf for years lol

  • Pretty cool, I like complex simulations

  • check out my vids for soundtrack and screenshots and godisableedingfaggot for fight vids

  • I never could do anything more than launch shuttles and crash in the sea in this game, plus shoot friendlies.

  • @RGInquisitor

My first successful flight I stopped all engines about half-km from the ground, facing straight down! :)

  • wow no falling animation

  • homeworld 2s graphics looks better than this.

  • @innonni HW2 graphics are phenominal, but the gameplay is restricted to space. how bout this, eh? slightly worse graphics but more innovative gameplay?

  • @Assaultbadger i dunno... i have to admit, i havent played it yet. but a lot of people says its crap.

  • .........

Speaking of modding, does anyone know what checksum algo the .ini files use? It's not md5 like Smart said on his company's forum, I tried that. I figure, if I can find a way to edit the checksum values at the top of the .ini files, I can edit them, add new ships, etc.

I've already updated the planetary detail textures, and I'll post a vid sometime soon, once I've updated ship textures and perhaps effects.

  • [Talking about the freeware version] A good game once you get past the graphics, bad terrain auto-generation, lack of interesting visual features between locations

(try landing at an allied base in a shuttle with a company of marines, getting them into gunships, and flying them to an enemy base on the same planet, takes hours, nothing interesting along the way), lack of time compression, and the fact that it's unmoddable.

    .........

  • crysis rocks!

  • i tried this game out once. was hard as hell to try and do anything

  • Derek smart He should put ingame tutorial in his games. I mean like: you enter in a tutorial and the game say "push the W button to move foward", if you push the game will say "ok. Now click with your mouse to fire the weapon" and this go on.

  • for all you noobs out there...yes you can destroy the planet using a "RANDOM" ots missile its a special artifact and your officers need 100 A.I. level to use it and special artifacts can only be seen on a space station 1/3 days at a time game time.

  • got some UC vids on my channel if you want a look, hope you can read english.

  • wtf

  • test post

  • The game was shipped before it was completed, it still isn't. Third party modders need to be allowed to intervene.

  • Agreed about the third party modding.

  • @RetardAdventuresNZ That shouldn't be legal. I just tried to play the freeware game. Ugh, The game is broken. It really needs modders to get this game to work, and not make me want to throw up looking at it.

  • @thesideshowman212 Sadly, it will never happen because of that obstructive asshole who made it. It's a great concept, but you need 6 months of training to understand it. Therefore, design = 0/10.

  • @RetardAdventuresNZ I got a freeware version of it. Goddamn, the controls didn't even fucking work. He asks for constructive criticism and then tries to shut down those who do give criticism. second. there is a serious problem with game controls if you need the goddamn keyboard to turn yourself. Even if the old shooters did that, at least they had aim assist.

Second, where's the enemies? If you're gonna make a game with guns, I WANT SOMETHING TO SHOOT AT! PUTTING IN AN AI TOO HARD, SMART?

  • @RetardAdventuresNZ You can't polish shit.

  • I was excited to try this game but it was too confusing and left me to figure everything out on my own :P

  • You know a game is bad when you need a tutorial just for basic movement xD

    But Hey!

At least Derek was kind enough to give us "pretty fishies" to look at :D (3:27)

  • what's the easiest way to get the billz for an ots missle? mining?

  • Yup.

  • @kraig2468 it takes about 3 hours for a mining drone to complete its course personally, i go looking for ships to destroy collect there cargo pods and sell shit i dont need. like when you start. I bought this when it came out and im still looking for a RANDOM OTS missle. they are still very rare.

  • 0:38

YOU CAN HEAR THE VENTRILO CLICKS

    hi5

  • Yeah seriously when are you gona make another tutorial?...

  • nvm solved that question but now I have a new 1, how do I get to sea? I want to sail but so far I only found out how to drive space ships, planetery planes, and ground vehicles

  • just screw sea completly, probably no battles and you cant drives the ships(i dont think, anyway...

  • question: When I land on a planet is there a way to get out of my spaceship and walk around? And if u can do that how do I enter a vehicle if I find one

  • i do like the "space GTA" feel this game gives... but this game needs A TON of work ... (especially a tutorial)

  • is this game good?

  • Will it give more tutorials?

  • Eventually.

  • just a quick question how do you quit from a game? and how to get in and out of vehcles?

  • ALT+Q I think. CTRL+ALT+E self-destructs the asset/conveyance you are in. To quit+save, press ALT+S to bring up the tac screen. Then select "COMMAND" -> SYSTEM -> SAVE AND QUIT. Press ALT+E to exit a vehicle/conveyance.

  • wasnt this one of the worst games ever made?

  • I wouldn't say its the worse, just the most unprofessionally done. If Derek's attitude wasn't so shitty towards the community and his peers and he took better design advice, then his engines wouldn't fail.

  • Wow this game looks ace.

  • Looks can be deceiving.

  • you gotta think star trek when playing this game its way bigger than world of warcraft. and ive played with more than 50 ships flying around on one screen shooting each other....once i found out that getting crates was the way to gain money and and turning off your launch bay when intruders got on board manually i never lost. :)

  • i gave up to because i once i got out of my ship then couldnt get back in lol....its kinda retarded that if you launch a shuttle and your in it and your main ship gets blown up you loose saying you died lol.

  • my favorite game i always played space

  • too many controls

  • It seems very similar to Battlecruiser Millenium

And man... I always wonder why games with such great potential are IMO screwed up by that damn difficulty level? On wiki I've read you can drive many ground vehicles, controllable SAM units, naval ships (subs too!), star ships, or you can simply fight as a simple soldier on the surface. Why then it couldn't have simple controls than any game has?

  • This way, the game would be kinda like battlefield. Imagine how would it be if you could simply control a soldier with WSAD and shoot the enemy. This way the game could be a little more dynamic. Who the hell enjoys hundreds of hotkeys to control a simple fighter? Only fans, and simulation maniacs. There's no place here for regular player. I want to play a game, not get a license for a fighter!

  • it's a direct descendant of the battl;lecruiser series...=D

  • btw how do u launch the shuttle at the start :) from ur ship

  • go to your menu, then i think systems, then tacops, then crew, then like find ur guy, then change his location from bridge to sc1, then when he's in, launch it=D BUT, UR CAP SHIP ID DEFENSELESS AFTERWARDS!!!!!! have fun=D

  • is this online like other players? and what is the aim of the game conquer the world?? lol

  • The aim is anything you want. Literally....there is no end "win" condition. There are end "loose" conditions, but you'll never get a pretty cinematic at the end like most games. It just goes on for infinity....essentially....in theory. Eventually you'll do something to get yourself killed, heh. You can be a raider with a fighter, a cap ship, a paramedic rescue ship, a commercial vessel of some kind....anything pretty much. The game requires some imagination.

  • Well, you lose if you get this game in the first place.

  • So am I free in this game? I mean can I fly from planet to planet?

  • you can do anything you want in this game.

  • does any one still play this i need help i just got it and im have some problems with vista any patches r help ?

  • pm me for help, the forums suck for any advice

  • A way to learn the game is play in windows mode and refer to the manuel on the desktop ,if you dont have a printed manuel.

  • True that.

  • I printed out the tutorial myself. That's also pretty useful.

  • IMHO, DS should just cut the land portion right out. Keep it simulated or just pixalated like most flight sims. That way he can focus on space combat. Although he should still keep carriers, bases and cities. Just make it so you can't walk around.

Ship boarding is the exception to this and I'm looking forward to it.

One question: Which game in the series did it become possible to beam troops into another ship to take it over?

  • idk... but actually they hack the transporter coding... if you know what that is, theres a feature on ur cap ship to beam troops and supplies(yes, including yourself) to the planet and/or moon(s) in which the system your located in.

  • how do i go into orbital mode...?

  • someone also please tell me how to launch shuttles, thanks

  • There is no means for doing this.

There are, however, *numerous* ways to just the game to crash to your desktop, which is an excellent way to transition to playing Derek Smark's Desktop Commander. :)

  • you need a person in the shuttle so go to tacops and make sum 1 go into the shuttle... o and launch control has to be on... and if intruders get on your ship turn launch control to off so they dont steel your shuttles or fighters

  • how do u make a person go in a shuttle?

  • go to tac ops (if that's not it there's a list in tac ops that u can find it on, one of them shows all the crew members) on the far right side of it you can give orders & tell people where to go. o and if you send ur character to a shuttle / fighter you will gain control of it.

  • cool but how do u order it to capture a ship or if im in it how do i do it? do i just dock with it then send people in the enemy ship?

  • impossible, unless you find a way to hack the enemie ships transporter codes.(not possible, not implemented in the game)

  • go to your tacops screen, alt+t, select the "crew"button, and assign your character to shuttle 1 or any of the vehicles.

  • try using your tacops computer to move you and your troops to different rooms and crafts abord ur cc(command craft, or cap ship.) it's kinda time consuming, but if you wanna be fast, wrong game.

  • ROAM campaighn i mean

  • ... how do you start with a naval unit in the ROAM game? please reply

  • you don't. not an option... naval warfare is basically nonexistent in this game.

  • **** well, time to go back to homeworld 2

  • I've been trying to figure out how to capture bases on planets from the commander roam campaign, but I've had no luck. I know how to capture space stations, but does anyone know how to capture bases on planets?

And to answer ravenshines, you can attack targets on a planet with a Orbit to Surface missile. Just go into orbit above the planet and use Tacops to find a spot on the planet to shoot.

  • You cannot capture ground based bases. Dunno why.

  • no, but you can hit them with an OTS and wipe them from the map :P

  • is there a way to fire at a target on a planet from space?

  • Yes, use an orbit to surface weapon (OTS). You can purchase them from space bases or space stations. Afterward then use the "OTS" selection in TACOPS when looking at a planet and select a target like you would with a waypoint.

  • how do you afford them?

  • Nice tut, but how do I enter roam mode. I got the game a while back, and recently had to reinstall it. When I click on roam, and then try to make a new save spot, it wont let me enter a name, and when I click accept, nothing happenes. I read on a forum that its because of anti aliasing, but I adjusted it to no avail. Any kind of help here would be appreciated.

  • nvm, I tried it again and it somehow worked.

  • I found this game a couple of days ago, it looks really interesting and I'd love to get into it but I have a problem with the graphics. The buttons on the HUD when I'm in a ship flash and lines flicker all across the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • i wanted to walk around in a ship :(

  • It's planned for the next game. See 3000ADs website.

  • You mean AAW? I'm sorta dissappointed they've decided to make the next game take place on only one planet, the thing that made the series worth all the trouble etc for me was the fact that there was so much freedom and so many planets etc to visit.

Guess I'll have to go back to Frontier: Elite 2.:(

  • Can planets be destroyed in this game?

  • No.

  • well, with an ots missle, depending on which one, you can kill like everything on it, rendering the planet useless... but destroy the planet? heavens no... =D

  • this game is really fun...but I'm still getting use to the controls...i don't know how to make repairs on the ship yet...and i don't know what to do when there are intruders on board...they always steel my shuttle and get away...and trash my ships systems in the process...

  • Go to LOGISTICS and shut off power to LAUNCH CONTROL to prevent intruders from stealing shuttles.. To repair, dock with a space station or planetary space base (indicated on planets by a teal icon or by SBASE_01.) Assign more marines to "SEARCH" by going to TACTICAL and then left clicking on the [<] button and selecting "SEARCH" in order to find the intruders faster.

  • I just downloaded the abandon ware version of this game. I've been trying to manually aim my Phantom gunship's cannon. I read the decouple thing in the manual, but it doesn't work. I open the "GUN" tab and click decouple and It doesn't work. How do I get the gunship cannon to aim where I point?

  • Press ALT when in 1st person. Then move the mouse. If you're not auto-pilot mode, your ship will move to face the mouse cursor. If you are in auto-pilot mode, you can then left-click to fire your turret and it should fire where you are currently aiming.

  • Awesome, PLease tell me you are making another vid of this.

  • Can't wait for part 2, once I watch it maybe this game will come off its dusty shelf

  • I think this game has enourmous potential besides the visible flaws. Is anyone still playing it and does anyone know active forums because i'm going to give it another go and would like some support.

  • how do you get out of a vehicle

  • ALT+E

  • Very, very detailed. Now, if it had only been around years before to show people that it really isn't all that hard to understand.

  • Wow. This was fantastic. Not only did you show the basic moves you also showed how beautiful the game looks in the SE version and above. The high qualtiy intro was also wonderful :) I hope this will convince more people to try the game, though it should be noted the free to play UC doesn't look this good but it has all the same game play featuers more or less.

  • Great video, I'm just getting started on UC, and it's a little overwhelming.

Hope to see more videos, I'm counting on you.

  • You need a new mic, RAS... good tutorial though!

  • I am quite fond of this part 1 tutorial. It was rather fast, especially for such a complicated game, but you worked up from simple to complex rather smoothly and you kept it informal so I was interested throughout. I really loved the intro, too. Great work.

Now you should have a "chapter summary" at the end to make sure we remember all the key points.
