Pamela Flood is one the few RTE presenters I can stand. She's a good-looking girl and there's nothing nasty or arrogant about her. Still, I don't know who thought this was a good idea for a show. There's nothing more boring than listening to someone talking about family photos that mean a lot to them but mean nothing to anyone else. More money for nothing for the Montrose crowd.
Lets be honest with ourselves and dont just go along with the crowd.
I believe multiculturalism is great for medium to big business owners at the expense of the local population.
Yes immigrants will fill these jobs that pay minimun wage.Great for the business owners who get there labor costs down so they can sell on there business.
What we dont talk about is the effect on the education system or the health system ,overcrowding etc
I don't get this notion that we're insular or "afraid of outsiders" (to quote a previous commentator). Centuries ago, Irish monks founded monasteries in Europe and spread Irish culture. My ancestors include English settlers (boo) and French Hugenots whose descendants married into Catholic families. From 1919, the country has been heavily involved in world politics. The independence struggle influenced many colonised countries who later achieved their freedom. Where's the insularity in this?
I agree. I am Irish myself and Irish history is soooooooooooooo boring. I hate to denounce my own country but that's the way it is I'm afraid. Also, the way in which History is taught in Irish education is a joke so maybe that has something to do with it.
wow! this looks like a great show. However, one of the things she said i'd disagree with is that we shouldn't still be in learning mode, and that we have a long way to go... i think we've already been there for a good few years. It's great how a lot of Irish people still take a very long time to get stuff done. COME ON IRELAND !!!
Like when they start teaching you all of it in school and you just sit there and go "*sigh* can we not just learn about Greeks or something? you know something cool"
We are a multicultural society and I enjoy experiencing various cultures. I fear that our "Irishness" may become diluted, and our identity less significant. That is not wholly because of Ireland becoming a multi-cultural society, but because of the Irishlosing their sense of self, forgetting the importance of our history, I'm afraid of our people losing their ability to defend themselves, to promote our heritage and to protect what our ancestors struggled for- an individual Irish identity,
Yeah i agree. I think people from other countries living here should also embrace our culture as well as their own. I'm trying to improve my Irish! :)
You only have to look at Dublin, the capital city......if you'd never been to Ireland before and you were stood in the centre of town would you know which city you were in?? The spire is the only give away. Most of the shops are foreign, look at Moore Street. Look at Guiness's...it's not owned by an Irish company anymore..what is?? Arnotts?? Clery's?? Look at the Financial centre...all foreign money...we sold our country years ago to foreigners. The yanks can land planes here when they want, why?
Well, I am wondering what do you mean by Irish identity. One of your most important heritage is the Gaelic language and close to obody is talking it nowaday. You have to work a lot on that. Your language is one of the most relevant element of your culture
The only way Irish will become a spoken language is if it is learnt at home, and the child learns from his or her parents. Sadly, Irish is used as a political tool and it's true, very, very few people in Ireland actually speak it . I disagree that the Irish language is one of the most relevant elements of the Irish culture. It has been misused since Independence and should be given due respect as a specialist language, like Latin.
i agree we need to embrace multiculturalism. too any are still stuck in the past catholicism, fear of outsiders etc. and blaming the english for everything we've got to move on and join the world
Multiculturalism is o.k. once the cultures do not merge. Like it or not we ARE all different for a reason, i'm not being racist here. A muslim living in the far east is different to a catholic living in Ireland. This doesn't mean we cannot get along though. The people who run the world would like it if we were all one big happy family with no individualism.....much easier to control. Europe proved this with their Lisbon treaty...trying to force us to sign up again!!!!

*sigh* The language is called Irish or Gaeilge. Gaelic is the collective term
bills2020 2 years ago
Gaelic? What is Gaelic!?
If you call the language Gaelic then theres no way you could know much about Irish heritage or culture.
btw Theres more people speaking the Irish language now than there ever was in the last 50 years
