I'm confused by your statement. USA didn't help us because it didn't want to upset it's own relations with the USSR. As for why we wanted independence.... well, why does any nation what to not be under the heel of an oppressive regime? As for why we wanted to be a part of the west... human rights and prosperity, just to name a few reasons.
