Congrats SFU on another world title, 2009! Just saw it on the news. Got to admit I was surprised that the reigning world champs came from so far afield as Vancouver. I would've expected a Scottish troop or maybe a Nova Scotia group to hold the mantle. No offence. ;o) Damn, I love bagpipes and drums being played in military harmony. Makes you almost sign up for the Army. Cheers and keep up the good work!
The drum major traditionally was the highest ranking member in the drum corps. He was responsible for the protection of drummers and instruments, Maintaining a High order of dress and discipline and also band/drum corps admin duties and carries out public relations. He is the figure head of the band. When he is on parade what he says goes. For glesgason to turn round and say "he's more an ornament than a necessary part of the band" is just rubbish.
They're only helpful if they're there, but a pipe-major could do all the jobs a Drum major would if the Drum Major was absent. It's just a traditional thing. And, btw, glesgason, i believe the term you're looking for when you mean leader of the drum section which is not the drum major is 'Lead tip.' That's the proper term for leader of the drum corps (but not drum major.)
The drum major is more a ornament than an necessary part of the band the two most important people in a band are the pipemajor who is really the captain of the ship and the leader of the drum section who I believe was reid maxwell who is as important to the drum section as the pipe major is to the pipe section the drum major is a sort of oxmoron.
Drum Major will be in black as this is seen as a more traditional colour for competing. She won't have been near the band untill after herself and the band have competed in their relevant sections so it doesn't matter if they wear different kilts even.
1. I believe the banner is called the RSPBA banner....
2. The drum major standing in front of the band at the 2008 World Pipe Band Championships isn't actually with SFU or RMM...she just happens to have the same kilt. I believe she is from Northern Ireland. SFU's own D/M Jason Paguio joined the band in 2009.
3. Sometimes RMM players will play SFU pipers' instruments during the warm up so all the drones can be tuned, etc. When they're good enough, they're invited to join the band ;)

The best band in the world in my opinion.
This particular medley blew me away. A
dream combination of tunes, well chosen and brilliantly executed. Simply the best.
Keep it going and good luck for the coming year SFU !!

Great medley! Congrats!
Just by curiousity:
1) What is the award called at 5:15 (the one you hang on to the bass drone).
2) Why is the Drum Major (with mace) in a different color tunic?
3) Does SFU compete with some of the skilled RMM players in their ranks?
Cheers!

Hi
1) I think its just a flag that is put on the bass drone of the winning bands pipe major
2) I dont really know much about drum majors sorry
3) I think that some of the RMM players can go into SFU if theyre good enough when they leave ( I think )

"Does SFU compete with some of the skilled RMM players in their ranks?"
Yes, people who are good enough from RMM3 or New Westminster Pipe Band move into SFU. Another aspect they look at is how good you are in solos.

Maybe she thinks that colour would suit the uniform better for her as a drum major!! As m7d is a high factor in it!
mattboydmemPIPER 2 years ago
Because the drum Major lives in Northern Ireland, and it depends what uniform the band have chosen for the day. She might not have had that uniform.
