As a former member of this chorale I know that this is probably still the group's "warm-up" piece that Prof Todd uses to get their voices limbered up at rehearsals. That might also explain the brash timbre of the voices giving a subconscious sense that the choir doesn't care about the words. Personally I always struggled to keep my emotions in check singing this piece because I've known and loved it since I was a child and the Reformation has come to mean so much to me as an adult.
You know, a lot of people hate on singers because they can't count....This choir can count. Their diction is incredible. When I hear a rythem of 1-e-and-a or 1-e-and- coming through in a soprano line and or a bass line that's amazing. You can say they did this arrangement way too fast all you want but they did it fast because they can and they do it well. I miss hearing that performed live.
The arrangement is great. I have sung it and conducted it many times. The choir has a good tone over all. And I certainly don't want to be linked with the haters on the comments....yet.....this tempo is crazy! And the text must not be important because it is completely distorted with this interpretation. Sad........
Jonesorg, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like this rendition of "A Mighty Fortress..." It is a different rendition than I care for, but I can appreciate the artistry and talent used here. There's nothing blasphemous or degrading about the song. I have been in one of this conductor's choirs before; I can assure you that he has a heart for God and demands nothing but the best from his students. What he does is more than a "just a job" for him. Please think twice before posting. God bless.
Pathetic performance of a beautiful, meaningful song..... u guys spoiled the sanctity of this reformation hymn... what a mockery of the sanctity u have done!! the wrath of GOD be upon u all.... His curse surround u all for generations to come!
Read Gal5:12 where Paul is telling the Apostles he wishes they would go further and cut themselves off.Look up and several othr trans and find the vicious Saul actually said he wished they would castrate themselves.Paul was predicted by Jacob as the one who would kill and then divide.Killed followrs of Jesus and divides his church.Jesus said this robber came into the fold another way.Jesus IDs saul in Rev2.Saul admits all of Jesus'churches rejected him to Timothy..false apostle and deceiver.
Although the degree of talent is great, it is my opinion that the song should be sang in it's traditional form. this "hurky jerky" rendition of the song removes the majesty and clouds the message, and yes, hurky jerky is a musical term....I think...
Totally valid!!! Totally valid thought!! However, for me, the way the conductor has crafted the interpretation to lead climatically and majestically to "A Mighty Fortress IS-OUR- GOD" at the end is absolutely brilliant a very passionate music making. Even more so at the performance on Scottobrady's page. The acoustics are better on that video too.
Lots of hate in these responses. I am a music educator and I think this is fantastic. Why would you want to perform the same as everyone else? These guys do a great job!
Very different. That's what music is all about. I think it's cool with the different twist on it. Tradition isn't all there is in the world of music. IT'S NOT HORRIBLE. You are all commended for tremendous vocals and using them to praise our God and King!! No negative comment here. Great blends, and expression!!

Technically brilliant, a world class choir - but I did not like the arrangement.Different does not necessarily equal better.

Check out Scottobrady--he has this too--both excellent! My high school choir did this back in the early 1980s.

There's no accounting for taste. Then again, someone needs to be held to account for the stunning LACK of taste this performance demonstrates.

I do...not...like...it! Please, please sing it the traditional way. This is just silly.

too fast!!!!My choir sings this every year and it is way better slower. I sing the high solo and I like how your soprano does it.

This was recorded in October/November, 2006 at a Wesleyan Church in Southern Michigan... I can't remember which one.
