The music is incredible, and the movie was simply astonishing. I am no historian so i cant say how accurate it was but I enjoyed the movie immensely. Have to live the opening counter to Jamukhas probing attack. Lose 25 guys in exchange for throwing the whole enemy column into disorder and then taking out a couple hundred of the bad guys is an incredible deal. As you said with Iraq having the largest army and navy (in 1865) does not constitute a super power. I also doubt the truth behind both those statements. What exactly do you mean by navy? Statistacly yes they are by far the most powerful country in the world but they have had nowhere near the success or influence of nations like Britain, Greece, Rome, Persia etc. These countries were able to take what they want when they wanted and NOBODY else even had a remote chance of stopping them. The USA simply does not have that kind of power.

@BloodiestMargie Actually the British Empire and its dominions had by far the largest empire ever in terms of landmass...if you are talking about largest continuous empire then yes, the short lived Mongol Empire would be the largest. If you are talking about percentage of the worlds population then the Qing dynasty in China held the most sway. Economically it is a bit of a toss up depending on how you measure it. In terms of absolute population the current PRC (China) is easily the largest ever.
@lundymaphone Yah, you're right. They always say "largest contiguous land empire" with the Mongols. But the British Empire had the benefit of naval technology allowing them to sail without having to hug the coast constantly, and shit-tons of guns.
@BloodiestMargie And the Mongols had the benefit of horses that pre-domestication societies would not have. The thing is the whole access to a powerful navy is not the primary reason the British were able to do what they did (as that was an advantage hardly exclusive to them). Their main advantage was the ability to properly administer colonies/alliances in a way in which few other empires had before them, they were more likely to conquer with the pen then with the bayonet.

The archers used a 2 finger draw, which is not realistic, given the enormous power of the Mongol bow. They will need to use at least 3 fingers for a Mediterranean draw. Mongols probably used the Mongol draw, which used the thumb.

@ElmerAwesome , on horse back, u cant hold a spear too far back to the end ( if u do, the thrust power will suffer greatly). That will limit their actual reach, ^^ so it's not that much of a range advantage

Not to sound arrogant that's not my intention, I really mean that in cavalry battles spears were used to knock the other out of the saddle. Swords couldn't do that (not from horseback) yet here the spearmen do a bad job...
@ElmerAwesome : It's apparently harder to fight with spear on horseback than with sword. Just like those fighting with spears against those using swords when both sides are on foot will lose. Spears are useful when used as pole arms by infantry against charging cavalry. In any case, you really need stirrups when fighting with spear on horseback to get enough force behind the spear to make it useful.
@ElmerAwesome a couple of things... first of all, the dual-weilding swordsman didn't stab anyone; that would have been slow and inefficient. What they were doing was clearly slashing. Second, you assume that all of the warriors are of an equal skill level. Look at their attire and compare it; the swordsman seem much better equipt and therfore better trained to me. Thirdly, one of the swordsman did get impaled by the spear, so I really have no clue what your talking about xD
i loved this movie, it was really great - one thing i was really sad was how all the guys at the first attack died, killed by their own archers - felt really bad and wasteful for that... :/

Statistacly yes they are by far the most powerful country in the world but they have had nowhere near the success or influence of nations like Britain, Greece, Rome, Persia etc. These countries were able to take what they want when they wanted and NOBODY else even had a remote chance of stopping them. The USA simply does not have that kind of power.

@BloodiestMargie Actually the British Empire and its dominions had by far the largest empire ever in terms of landmass...if you are talking about largest continuous empire then yes, the short lived Mongol Empire would be the largest. If you are talking about percentage of the worlds population then the Qing dynasty in China held the most sway. Economically it is a bit of a toss up depending on how you measure it. In terms of absolute population the current PRC (China) is easily the largest ever.

The thing is the whole access to a powerful navy is not the primary reason the British were able to do what they did (as that was an advantage hardly exclusive to them). Their main advantage was the ability to properly administer colonies/alliances in a way in which few other empires had before them, they were more likely to conquer with the pen then with the bayonet.

@anonymous133711 Well several differences 1) The method by which one gains control is little consequence once control is established (for the purpose of measurement) 2) Diplomacy is often a far more efficient method for obtaining goals. 3) Much like the British, the Mongols often used the threat of force (rather then actually following through) to achieve victory. 4) I am not sure what your Soviet argument is meant to imply as the largest continuous empire = mongols, largest total = British.

@iamjewishnub It wasn't on purpose probably. They shot at the enemy, the first wave of fighters were just canon fodder or "Forlorn hope". It supposed to be a message of loyalty of the soldiers to Genghis. That's probably why there's that scene at 06:08, where Genghis looks at his dead soldier.

The archers used a 2 finger draw, which is not realistic, given the enormous power of the Mongol bow. They will need to use at least 3 fingers for a Mediterranean draw. Mongols probably used the Mongol draw, which used the thumb.

mongolians won so many battles in europe in part due to fact that mongolian cavalry was lighter and more mobile than its european counterpart and thus could easily encircle and flank the enemy. their general Subutai was also a great military strategist who used many forms of deception to their advantage. one interesting tactic was using smokescreens created with gunpowder to confuse the enemy and to obstruct their field of vision

Swords couldn't do that (not from horseback) yet here the spearmen do a bad job...

@ElmerAwesome : It's apparently harder to fight with spear on horseback than with sword. Just like those fighting with spears against those using swords when both sides are on foot will lose. Spears are useful when used as pole arms by infantry against charging cavalry. In any case, you really need stirrups when fighting with spear on horseback to get enough force behind the spear to make it useful.

@ElmerAwesome a couple of things... first of all, the dual-weilding swordsman didn't stab anyone; that would have been slow and inefficient. What they were doing was clearly slashing. Second, you assume that all of the warriors are of an equal skill level. Look at their attire and compare it; the swordsman seem much better equipt and therfore better trained to me. Thirdly, one of the swordsman did get impaled by the spear, so I really have no clue what your talking about xD
