It was invented by Australian Aaron Jenkin, it was called a "Jenkos flip". He then named it "Pencil Flip". Then in a issue of Slam (Australian Skateboard magazine) Darrel Stanton is pictured performing the trick and he refers to it as a Dolphin Flip.

@skatintildawn bigflip is pretty much a tre flip and you turn with half the rotation. if you wanna do them in skate 3, which is the only place you'll be doing them, do a varial kickflip and a back 180. if you know what those tricks are, which would surprise me.
