You stated: "O'Reilly was old, but tried to handle it, and Chris dropped him and opened him up."
This never occurred, as Terry O'Reilly was even not laced up and on the ice during the Nilan cheap shot on Middleton, and was probably not in the building.
Terry's final season with Bruins was 1984-85. Chris Nilan butt-ended Rick Middleton during 1985-86 season. I'm not sure where you are getting your information from -- perhaps you can clarify.
@KarmicOmen Give it up Karmic, it's not worth the trouble. Don't even try to reason with Bagsucknation. He'll call you every name in the book, insult your mother and challenge your masculinity rather than try to intelligently defend his position. You've got him dead to rights here. Do yourself a favor and block this ass hat like most people do.
@KarmicOmen We might not be agreeing with one another but at least you're not the kind of douche that starts resorting to insults to prove a point. I figured you didn't deserve to be subjected to that idiot's BS. Just make sure you block him. You'll be glad you did.....:P
"Challenge your manhood" -- well, that might present challenge for him (see my profile). I don't believe in belittling name-calling during a debate -- it's unfair and counterproductive. I appreciate you looking out for me -- thank you.
@KarmicOmen Your absolutely right Karmic. The fight between Nilan and O'Reilly was in January of 85, and this happened in October. Apparently I confused Nilan butting Middleton with the night he ran the B's goalie. This night Nilan fought Markwart and got the better of him, but that was was before the butt end. My mistake. There were so many instances where Nilan threw cheapshits sparking brawls, that some of them can get confusing and run together.

Such as the "high standards" -- or lack thereof, exemplified by Chris Nilan for so many years as the cornerstone and fundamental core of Canadiens "integrity"?
@KarmicOmen Yeah because the 70's Bruins were such a great bunch of gentlemen? There was the coke head Sanderson, The stick man Schmautz, The bully Green (who bullied one guy too many). Oh and the 80's were so much better: Byers the raging drunk, Miller the worst regular forward and biggest goon (not that I have a problem with that mind you, he was a great fighter as was Byers, when he was sober) in the game.........need I go on? Every team has it's share of questionable characters.
Launching unwarranted attacks on Byers, Miller, and Sanderson to further make a point ... questionable character, indeed.
Derek Sanderson: The strength, courage and perseverance to battle back from the brink of hell, to overcome tremendous personal demons and beat the odds and turn his life around -- to turn his own negative experiences into means of positive support and services to others so that they can avoid his mistakes ... now that's character
@KarmicOmen Wow. I've never seen so many excuses being made for people. And what do you mean unwarranted? Byers WAS a drunk. Miller could barely skate down the ice without falling down and Green STARTED the fight with Maki. Don't act like these guys were angels. Nilan was no better but you started this by insulting Nilan. I never said Chris was an angel, but maybe his jersey isn't hanging in the rafters BECAUSE Montreal doesn't want it there.
Unwarranted meaning unnecessary -- neither of those you listed have been part of the conversation, but you dragged them in egregiously ... not to make a point, but to make examples.
@KarmicOmen Exactly. You tried to attack Nilan and build up O'Rielly by saying that Terry's Jersey hangs in the rafters. I never tried to make the case that Nilan was an angel, I simply said maybe the Canadians have higher standards, meaning they don't want Nilan's jersey up there. You then attacked the Habs integrity for having Nilan and I responded by citing players of questionable ability, ethics & character that played for the Bruins. I even stated that every team has players like that.
For whom did I make excuses? I merely pointed out facts regarding Derek Sanderson, forgoing comment on the others. Are you disputing what I outlined about Derek as being anything other than factual?
@KarmicOmen No, are you denying he was a coke head and a man of questionable ethics and character back then? The issue was what guys like Nilan and Sanderson behaved like during their careers, not what they accomplished after they retired. I don't care if Sanderson became a member of the peace corps, a minster and an aide to Mother Theresa, he was a bad actor back then on AND off the ice. Every team had guys like that.
I am not dismissing the negative ... that Derek was an alcoholic and drug addict -- that he screwed up his own life and possibly the lives of others. What I am doing is outlining the positive as well ... what he has done and become since that time.
What you are doing is venerating Nilan -- a reprobate who has not changed at all for the better, but rather has progressively spiraled into an even bigger moral degenerate since retiring from hockey.
@KarmicOmen Actually I never said Nilan was a good guy. Show me where I said Chris was an upstanding citizen and decent person. In fact in almost every post I said he was no angel, or did you not read my posts thoroughly?
@KarmicOmen I never said anything good about Nilan. You jumped Nilan's leg for no apparent reason. Don't read things into my posts that aren't there.
If you have nothing good to say about Nilan, don't disingenuously imply indignation in your comments. My remark pertained to Chris Nilan only -- not the Canadiens as a whole until you took aim at the Bruins, and thereby minimized Terry O'Reilly.
If not in retaliation for my comment on Nilan; if not in defense of Nilan since you "have nothing good to say" ... disparaging Terry O'Reilly was what then ... simply for the sake of doing so?
"Terry O'Reilly finally wins a fight" is what prompted my response ... to an outright lie. What I said about Nilan in my initial response to that, and what I have maintained since about Nilan, is the unadulterated truth.
@KarmicOmen O'Reilly wasn't much of a fighter and lost more than he won. He had terrible balance and usually flopped around while he got rag dolled by much better fighters.
Terry O'Reilly to this day is the first one to admit that his skating skills were lacking. He had the biggest heart and soul of any player in the league, though -- far more noble traits than the ability to beat the breath out of someone.
@KarmicOmen Believe it or not I might actually be a distant relative of Terry. I was told that the O'Reilly's that we are related to are also related to Terry. Have never verified it though.
@KarmicOmen Cool. My dad always talks about his relatives the "Fightin' O'Reillys".........but then with a name like that how could you not be "fighting"?
You implied that Terry's jersey hanging in the Boston Garden rafters was indicative of Bruins setting a lesser standard for themselves as a team. You might as well have screamed it, actually.
Chris Nilan isn't fit to shine Terry's shoes -- not on the best day of his life. Chris is from this area -- where he has to live with that fact every day.
@KarmicOmen What Rafters.... you got nothing up there.. its fuckin empty...LOL..!! Couldn't find a place for Nilan's because there is no space... because we got so much up there... Nice try Troll..
@KarmicOmen ... and a Cup ring. How many Cup rings does O'Reilly have? Retiring O'Reilly's number is like buying a shirt to fill up the last hanger in the closet. May as well. The space is there for one.
Chris Nilan could have a million rings, but not one of them will ever afford him 1/1,000,000 of the integrity, pride and courage that Terry O'Reilly encompassed naturally as a player and a coach; as a leader ... or the respect Terry O'Reilly earned on his own merit ... neither of which Nilan had then or has today!
@bigtimcny Oreilly had decent numbers his whole career , 90 points 1 season and 77 on another , along with over 200 PIMs in each of those seasons. Also finished his career with a very high plus/minus.
Players like Bobby Orr, Terry O'Reilly and Cam Neely could fight and would fight, but they also commanded respect -- and then, well ... and then there's Chris "Cheap Shot Chickenshit" Nilan.
O'rielly coached my high school team for a couple years. Real stand up guy. But man, his face close up? Oh my god, what that kind of hockey did to a guy.
Terri lives a mile from me and I didn't know it till this summer.
My boss and I were driving to a job and a black pick up truck went by and I said, wow that looked like Terri O'Rielly. Boss tells me, it was he lives right up the road.
Hmm, news to me, lol.
Apparently he bought a hotel at the beach I live near. Learn something new everyday.
The Canadiens thought so much of Nilan they didn't even put his name on the back of his jersey! Even when he came to Boston later in his career, I thought he still was a bum who was a sucker shoter at best.
@5inthehole a bum eh thats why hes in the Nhl u know cause he sucks and thats why ur on youtube commenting about how he sucks play at his lvl then u can diss em
@5inthehole um the fact that u on youtube making fun of a good hockey player and again u think nhl players come on youtube to talk shit ...no cause there not as low as u
Chris Nilan was a good hockey player? My hockey cards must have different statistics on the back then yours. Terry O'reilly wasn't just a goon; he was an enforcer who also could play hockey as displayed by his 90+ point season in 77-78. Nilan on the other hand spent most of his time in the NHL in the penalty box. Now if talking the truth is talking shit I'm guilty. I'm not insulting, I'm laying down facts. Sounds to me like you are the one who knows shit about hockey...
@5inthehole im not saying nilan was better im saying u cant say he sucks till u play at his lvl and see how good u are cause like a said u cant get into the NHL not being able to play hockey
@BoSoxnation1972 get a life you loser !!! all you do is youtube "reply". ran out of porn sites ??? IDIOT. using lines from movies...how original !!! the only clown who used that line ended up part of a condo complex. what a joke you are !!! get out from your mom's basement and get out and live a little !!! LMFAO
@5inthehole Have to agree pro! Chris Nilan has a the most penalty minutes (of players over 2000 PIM) average per game 4.42 but damn O'Reilly was good. From '75 to '82 only one season under 50 points, one 61 points, 77 points and 90 points. Still I think most impressive is his playoff statistic. 108 games and 67 points. That's a whole bunch for an enforcer even on that period of hockey.
@5inthehole I'm a Hab fan and have to admit you're right. Nilan was fun to watch, particularly when he won the odd fight vs the bruins, but he wasnt a complete player.
@5inthehole im only 17 and i know that Gainey-Carboneau-Nilan was one of the best Checking Lines in NHL history.... So yes he was a very good hockey player that could put up some goals and is a very good checker and enfocer. Get your damn facts straight you idiot.
@gravino555 I'll give you Gainey & Carboneau (to of the best defensive offencemen of their time) no one would take anything away from those players. Nilan could have been a better player but never took it upon himself to do so. He rather spend his time in the penalty box. In a way its to bad because he could have been a better all around player.
@tng150 I know where he was from. That doesn't change my opinion on iota. I really thought it a disgrace to the Bruins uniform when he played for Boston for a couple of years...disgusting, just as bad as when they signed Plett for a year!
@5inthehole Yes, Nilan was a very good player. Clearly you don't know much about hockey. Hockey is a man's game. It requires toughness. Nilan was a tough guy who laid down the law and got himself a Stanley Cup ring in 1986 for it. O'Reilly was a greasy freak. You Bostonians love your greasy freaks, just like now you've got Chara. Your appetite for grease never ceases.
How many kids of the 1980's and 1990's idolized Nilan vs. idolized O'Reilly in the 1970's and 1980's? Nilan wasn't exactly legend caliber. Nilan lacked character of any kind, but he sure exemplified every character flaw under the sun.
Taz embodied courage, perseverance, honor, hard work, pride and leadership; he was hockey personified! Not only can comparisons not be drawn between Nilan and Taz, because Nilan can't hold a candle -- Nilan can't be compared to most real men, period!
Pulled another all-nighter Scooter? Let me guess....they're still overseeding! LMFAO Priceless Scooter. Why don't you message me on my "seanavery" screenname! ROTFLMAO
if i don't stop clowning bosoxnation1972, i'll not only be fronting the jerry lewis labor day telethon for the next 20 years, but i'll be making pledges too..............lol
Nilan was young there and was educating himself as far as being a brawler goes.O`Reilly was seasoned brawler. They were also good players for there teams. If they weren`t on your team you hate them but if they were on your team you`d love them.
Hey dude, Nilan is from Boston, went to Northeastern University, and later played for the Bruins. We love the guy, except when he was getting his ass kicked by Terry!
Annnnnd here he goes againnnnn! Boy you are so good! Come on, you can do it. Give me another one of those gross insult, full of hatred and showing your lack of education. Come on, let's have it again. Show everybody how low you are. Come on, don't be shy, you can do it!!
Nice try . I have a master's degree you pitiful dunce. The Habs should arrange for Nilan to get a job modeling men's swimwear at one of Montreal's gay men's clubs.
SlipSlydinLydin I dont watch much of the fights, but isnt lucic the guy who won? and isnt godard a guy who only fights? I just see it on youtube, i dont watch much games. I watch him(godard guy) fight thornton who supposed to be the guy in the other team who fights and Godard loses. I like Godard though. his fights are fun.
hey bosox...i see you threw a little of mrjuha in for good measure...lol
are you so delusional that you argue and befriend your other accounts....lol
Oh. Gee. I guess Bruins never get injured (except Bobby Orr, Cam Neely, Ted Green (mostly on cheap shots from NHL goons, by the way). How many more cups would they have won?
Look Chistine, I could write about your vacuous mind, lack of education and your obvious lack of intelligence but this is about O'Reilly cleaning up on punk Nilan. See ya!
Getting clubbed by Terry O'Reilly just prepared Shitbag Nilan for his latest ass kicking --- by a mall cop! The loser tried to swipe a swimsuit from South Shore Plaza in Braintree, MA last week and resisted arrest. News accounts indicate that Nilan and a fellow shoplifter were bloodied by the two pencilneck mall cops who cuffed him. Too bad Chris didn't have his stick so he could butt end them in the mouth like he did to Rick Middleton!
Haha, why does Nilan not have his name on the back of his jersey? when he skates by the other Canadiens they have names on the back of their jerseys, weird.
You got it all wrong mustanghutch. You are the ignorant cunt disrespecting Terry O'Rielly. He had more heart than every one of the pussies who ever played for monteal put together so shut your fucking mouth you fucking moron.
Can't wait till the Habs beat the Bruins again in the playoffs this year. Oh yeah, nice job by the Bruins retiring O'reilly's number. That's how pathetic the history in Beantown is.
they had bobby orr phil esposito and cam neely yea thats some shitty history right there. youre a fucking moron. second the habs arent going to beat the bruins in the playoffs but they will beat the bruins on the way home to the golf course. sorry buddy the bruins got it this year.
Where's the fight where Nilan knocks O'reilly out cold behind the Bruins net? God I'd love to see that again. O'reilly skates all the way down the ice while Nilan waits for him, and then knocks him out with one punch. Too bad it wasn't moron Milbury.
yep that happened terry still had his gloves on it was over pete peters being knocked down by nilan terry was cut for 20 stiches and nilan also said he was sorry as terry was his idol.
my last name is nilan, never knew there was a chris nilan that was a hockey player

Examples of why Terry should ever be envious of Chris ... yeah, I'm drawing a blank.

@KarmicOmen You Boston idiots are just jealous that the Habs have more cups than you.
JRCrowley 5 months ago
@KarmicOmen ... and a Cup ring. How many Cup rings does O'Reilly have? Retiring O'Reilly's number is like buying a shirt to fill up the last hanger in the closet. May as well. The space is there for one.
rcoveyduc 4 months ago
@rcoveyduc
A cup ring ...
KarmicOmen 4 months ago 9
@rcoveyduc
Just an FYI: Terry's was not the "last" ... Ray's was.

@bigtimcny Oreilly had decent numbers his whole career , 90 points 1 season and 77 on another , along with over 200 PIMs in each of those seasons. Also finished his career with a very high plus/minus.

YamahaYOshi 2 years ago
Chris Nilan was a good hockey player? My hockey cards must have different statistics on the back then yours. Terry O'reilly wasn't just a goon; he was an enforcer who also could play hockey as displayed by his 90+ point season in 77-78. Nilan on the other hand spent most of his time in the NHL in the penalty box. Now if talking the truth is talking shit I'm guilty. I'm not insulting, I'm laying down facts. Sounds to me like you are the one who knows shit about hockey...

sparwood8 1 year ago
@5inthehole You were doing o.k. until your last sentence here.
sparwood8 1 year ago
@5inthehole Have to agree pro! Chris Nilan has a the most penalty minutes (of players over 2000 PIM) average per game 4.42 but damn O'Reilly was good. From '75 to '82 only one season under 50 points, one 61 points, 77 points and 90 points. Still I think most impressive is his playoff statistic. 108 games and 67 points. That's a whole bunch for an enforcer even on that period of hockey.

@5inthehole im only 17 and i know that Gainey-Carboneau-Nilan was one of the best Checking Lines in NHL history.... So yes he was a very good hockey player that could put up some goals and is a very good checker and enfocer. Get your damn facts straight you idiot.
gravino555 11 months ago
@gravino555 I'll give you Gainey & Carboneau (to of the best defensive offencemen of their time) no one would take anything away from those players. Nilan could have been a better player but never took it upon himself to do so. He rather spend his time in the penalty box. In a way its to bad because he could have been a better all around player.
5inthehole 10 months ago
@5inthehole 21 goals one year, i think that what he meant.

tng150 8 months ago
@tng150 I know where he was from. That doesn't change my opinion on iota. I really thought it a disgrace to the Bruins uniform when he played for Boston for a couple of years...disgusting, just as bad as when they signed Plett for a year!
5inthehole 8 months ago
@5inthehole Nilan was a good player. Take that big "B" out of your ass.
JRCrowley 5 months ago
@5inthehole Yes, Nilan was a very good player. Clearly you don't know much about hockey. Hockey is a man's game. It requires toughness. Nilan was a tough guy who laid down the law and got himself a Stanley Cup ring in 1986 for it. O'Reilly was a greasy freak. You Bostonians love your greasy freaks, just like now you've got Chara. Your appetite for grease never ceases.
JRCrowley 5 months ago
@JRCrowley
