My earliest memory of any airplane is that of a Lockheed Constellation flying very low over our house in Scarborough, Ontario, in the early 1960's when I was around five years old. I remember it's impressive size, four rumbling engines, and distinctive triple tail as clearly as if it'd happened yesterday. It's great to see this Dutch example being so beautifully maintained by enthusiasts. Great job, guys!
Lekker ding is 't! Thanks voor de beelden inclusief het motorengeronk. Heerlijk!
Thanks for this wonderful video. What a beautiful, beautiful aircraft! I held my breath just watching the engines start! My father flew as a passenger in Constellations several times in the late 1950's. Will this particular aircraft ever be available for the general public to take excursion flights at sometime in the future?
Goeie vraag...!
@AlexAlberto Sorry Alex, there were two Constellations converted for test purposes, and the US Navy flew them. Search for Lockheed 1249A-94-75 YC-121F Constellation, and be amazed!
Actually one or two WAS converted by Lockheed 'Skunk Works' in 1953-54 to test the T-34 turboprop then in developement. with 5,500-6,000 hp per engine the could cruise at 440 mph (710 kmh) making them the fastest propeller driven airliners at that time. That it was possible to install engines almost twice the power of the piston engines says a lot about the sturdiness off the Connie's airframe. The T-34 turboprop was later user to power the C-133 Douglas Cargomaster ....
Yes, there were several in military service fitted with turboprop engines, but none got beyond test flights. They tested both the Allison 501 model and the P&W T-34.
The proposed model would be the 1449. The test results were used in the development of the L-188 Electra eventually.
What a beauty - my father worked for the Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) fire dept in the fifties and told us about a Connie making an emergency landing on a foam covered landing strip.
I saw and loaded many Dutch Constellations super and short in prestwick airport of the 60's (The rear hatch was a bitch!) BUT it is by far the Beautiful of the prop driven Aircraft. Thanks for the Guys dedication and hard work and for posting the video. Hele Veel Bedankte!
beautiful noise from 4 turbo compound radial engines. I want to see the look on the Cessna pilots face when he got broadside to the prop wash as the connie wound her engines up!
Maar bedankt in ieder geval voor jou kritisch opbouwend opmerking; I LOVE THAT!

Hi Alex,
Thanx for this great video.
Is there a video from the crew in the cockpit during this engine run? They must have had a bold time watching the gauges....
