The square headlights are for the American market only, the rest of the world got round headlights. I've owned 3 VW Golf II's (a 1984 C 1.6 40kW Diesel, 1983 1.6 GL 55kW and 1984 1.6 C 55kW automatic) and loved them for their build quality and bomb-proof mechanics. One of them is still on the road with valid MoT on it, the other two died in an accident.
My Mk2 Golf is on 173000 miles and going strong. The head gasket leaks a little water but that was 30000 miles ago that it started. It's the best car l have ever bought.
Yes Volks. set the trend for everyone to follow or try to copy. Shortly after the golf or rabbit came out, several car makers came out with their version.
they never tested it cuz ur so called gm cant take corners fo shyt comon now hondas suck but they can at least take a corner with out coming out backward lol dumass get ya shyt straight volkswagen all day(hell out truck r even better than GMs look up w12. u probly aint even ready fo it)
G.M didn't really have a competitor, exept for the Chevette but that car would get the g]crap kicked out of it by the golf . the next step up would be the cavalier Z24 but that was in a different price and size class.
My sister's first car was a Golf diesel, five-speed with 225,000 miles on it. Great car, great design, very comfortable, and 49 MPG!!. But, it was starting to need lots of expensive work and the a/c system was rubbish!
I owned the 1986 VW Golf..I bought it used in 1998..It still ran great and the handling of the car was the best feature it offered..The best thing I remember is the "shift light" would come on when it was time to change gears
I would rather own my 92 2 liter 16v over ANY modern car, VW's included. They just dont make fun, relatively light, yet comfortable, simple, and practical cars with plenty of feedback and character any more.
If the Civic were an Si instead of a DX, heh. The old Golfs aren't slow cars for their time, i've owned a Civic base model and Corolla SR5 like shown. The '86 Golf (GTI 8V) i have currently really is alot quicker, and the 16v they released in '87 GTI (which i also had) was actually a pretty quick car for it's time.
You really think the Civic is faster? Hahahaha you must be one of those types who thinks that Honda makes the best cars in the history of mankind. Hahahaha
Dude my ride has a V8 engine with 300 horses it could eat your Little Jetta dude so forget it even my w124 300D with 125 horses could smoke your jetta so forget it.
Dude, no way. Your car has to use all of that horsepower just to move its 4000 pound ass into a roll! My engine can bring me to 60 before you're even feeling the breeze through your windows. My Jetta can win from pure character.
Lol my 105hp California emissions-regulated 1988 4-cylinder 8 valve engine gets 0-60 in 7 seconds. I bet my car cost less than the insurance on either of your cars. Imagine what my Jetta could do if I put in a couple thousand and a few hundred hours of work? VR6 swap with a supercharger and some head work? Your W124 would be choking on my exhaust fumes. I hope you realize this entire time I was joking...of course a stock Jetta can't beat a Mercedes. They're not even close to the same car class!
Square headlights! This was in the time that cars in the US were required to have square headlights, just to bother all the non-american car manifactures having to change their fronts.
The irony here is that the Golf had round lights in most other markets it was sold! (it suits the round lights better) - very opposite to the time until the mid-70s when the U.S only allowed round headlights on vehicles sold there!
Cool, I forgot about that preceding and equally stupid rule. Thnx for the info! Actually, on wikipedia you can find pictures of the 70's US mercedes W123 with special (ugly) round headlights different from the european version. A good thing they got rid of these rules by now, can you imagine how any modern car would look like if the headlights had to be replaced by either fully square or round lights?
The 2006 Vokeswagon Golf beat the 2006 Honda Civic SI by just a few points according to Car and Driver magazine. German engingering is superb also is japanese. Tips for new cars, dont get American brands, sorry but German and Japanese are sooo much better trust me.
the 1983-1992 Volkswagen Golf was assembled in
Wolfsburg, Germany,
Brussels, Belgium,
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
New Stanton, Pennsylvania, United States
Puebla, Puebla, Mexico
Uitenhage, South Africa

Actually it's an early Mk2 Golf. The square headlights show that it's just an early (westmoreland PA) production car.
