Hypatia, you have a rare talent for turning such a heavy historical material into an easy to watch captivating movie clip. I hope you will continue working in this direction. Great job~
@WhiteLebed Thank you, White. I appreciated that. I have in mind a series of machinima devoted to the "Medieval"... in various manifestations (whether historically or imaginatively represented)... and fuss around with that artistically. I do believe the medievals would have written science fiction had they lived today, and they would have made machinima. They loved code, number, secrets, multi-media, marginalia, dream, paradox.
I like your dedication to this historical personality. Technically also good solved, good use of the shadow features of the viewer. And btw: your voice is great :-)
@PhoenixEmbers You are an inspiration to me... thanks. I love your narrative machinimas. Having done KAPHD, my first "story" with more than one character, I can well understand the incredible time you put into your films. Working with other talented people must be so rewarding. What a great cast for Simulacron.. (My alts are my actors!) :) As for the singing, I hear its faults; plainchant is supposed to be without vibrato. What a chore, all those takes! lol
Hypatia, Amazing work. I was spellbound with the story and awed with your use of visuals, camera work, colors, music, text. It all came together to create a work of art.
O that is amazing, such a variety of images and shots, stark to floral to surreal (perching on Claudia's creation one of countless inspired touches). I was drawn into the sub-theme of texts and characters by how you integrated them into your imagery. Hey your singing is excellent and the percussive arrangement subverted "holy choir-ishness" and profaned the mood just enough to keep it strange and fresh. wow
@2SenseProductions LOL! "perching on Claudia's creation..." I love Strange Tree! it is both lush and repulsive; it's beauty is utterly unique, and I thought it would make the perfect hell scene for a priest worried about the least of his sins! haha! Thanks so much. The music was pure serendipity. It has that one sustained drone note that gives it mystery without being Gregorian plain chant. Profaned the mood indeed...Getting it to crash at the right points was the challenge. :)
Waw ! I am totally impressed by your work Hypathia ! Such a good rythm, very nice editing, and extremely well filmed. Details in shootages, music and voices make here a very high level machinima.
@Ionoallen Iono! THANK YOU! I'm really grateful that you noticed the work I put into it. Also, I'm in love with my poor, benighted, errant, self-centered little priest. When you like the story I glow. :)
A graceful and intuitive narrative illustrating key aspects of the impact the Blessed Hildegard of Bengen had on her world and the time in which she lived in. The beauty of the selected images and the pacing create a mesmerizing and finely tuned narrative that carries the viewer from the first moments of the machinema to the end. The animated characters are endowed with emotional weight, particularly in the sensitivity and intensity of the priest Ferdia and the tavern wench Liesel. Well done.
@domainrouge You've made my day. I was trying very hard for emotional depth and variety in Ferdia's character especially, and I'm glad you noticed. Tavern girl strangely turned out to be more sympathetic and loving than I had thought, focused on him while he's focused on his problems.
As I mentioned to you, this synthesis of digital and medieval means re-situates the viewer in a timeless place (or one in which the time frame loses its ordinary importance). The result is primal, elemental in its penetration of the viewer's defenses, at least for me that's true. It turns out not to be about a scene or specific people, but rather about the interiors of one's mind and one's eternal struggles to decipher them. Hildegarde appears as an illuminating inner energy.
@dwpaxson omg Dana... what a thoughtful response! I don't know if any of that's true, but if it is for you I'm really wowed! :) Yes... you're making me see that it's about "decipherment." Those mysterious letters that Hildegard produced as well as the story about the mysterious letters she deciphered as well as the mysterious images inside the Priest that he can't read. He just has nightmares about them. "The altar has more than just the letters." Also has a flower poofer in it. :)
