@knarfzxc Hey,whats good bro?Your comment on how both TEE and TONY Pumped that RLA sound system is right on target.I was just wondering if you know, what ever happened to that system that was in there?
Apparently, the PA has been rebuilt: wavemusicdotcom/community/showthreaddotphp?t=11857
After The Garage closed the RLA Zanzibar was the bomb; however, I think the best PA Long installed was at Twilight Zone in Toronto. Very near the end of his career and I think the last one he did, there was some real cutting edge stuff in that rig. It went to another club called Gotham and after that I think it was dismembered; sad.
@skfj67 That system has been broken up between a lot of the Dj's in Jersey I myself have 1 of the the black BGW amps that was in the plexi glass that was facing out on the floor with the upside down vu lights along with 2 of the 15 inch tads that was in the WALDORFS.. i KNOW FOR A FACT DJ PUNCH ZANIZIBAR HAS THE REST OF THE SYSTEMS THAT HE PUT BACK TOGETHER AND IS NOW BEING USED AT THE SEED ON ON 4TH AVE IN NEWARK ON SATURDAY.. AND A FEW OF THE OTHER amps igt be at consolidated audio.
@skfj67 TYPO AT THE SEED ON 7TH AVE IN NEWARK IF YOU ARE PUNCH'S FRIEND ON FB HE HAS PICS OF HIM PUTTING the system back together FROM THE Burtha BINS THE WALDORFS AS WELL AS THE bullet boxes that use to fly over the dance floor and the JBL FIN HORNS THAT SAT ON TOP OF THE WALDORFS.
The New Jersey sound was soulful. I remember visiting my family in Chi town and we were bewildered by their house music, it was more about weird sounds like clicks & bop noises though certainly danceable. The NJ sound had great vocals. "love dancing" is probably my all time favorite house track. I think people in the UK are lucky that dance music is the popular music. It never became mainstream in the USA.
Yes, I was there when the Video Crew shot this... gave them Full Access to both Club 88 & Zanzibar... I declined to be interviewed... was quite busy back then running "3" Clubs... billie prest
@Club88EastOrange Billie you were thee man back then and no one can tell the legacy of the New Jersey Club Scene Club 88, Club America, or Zanzibar the way you could my brother. These stories need to be told by the people who were there. Not retold by people who weren't Theres just no comparison.
Club Zanzibar was one of the greatest homes for house and dance music maestroed by the King Tony Humphries himself. Zanzibar was the only other sound system that came anywhere close to The Paradise Garage's system. Both systems by Richard Long but Larry Levan would constantly keep tweaking the Garage's system day after day and night after night. Til there was nothing else like it. Once The Garage closed in 1987, The system of choice was hands down Club Zanzibars!
Special love and thanks to all of my house family especially Tony Humphries! Words can never describe what we lived and captured during those days. Jersey nevers seems to get the real respect it deserves in the history of House Music but those that lived know the real deal....
Wow! it brings back so many memorries. I remeber that lady abby who was owner of moving records in east orange and Tony Humphries who step in there from time to time. Man i baught tons of records from there big ups to clubsinsations djpunch and shank and dj forell much respect to jersey where club music branch off besides chicago and newyork.

iM a trua new jersian lols. i love my club music. i may be young but i love it. this kind of club music paved the way for dj jayhood,dj slinnk and so on
Much love from London. This sound was so special back then and still holds a special place in our hearts now. Beautiful vibes. Nuff respect to everyone involved in creating it.
The Zans was the place to be. Tony Humpries was the man but shout out the one known as DJ Punch. That brother put folks to work on the dance floor. The sound and the atmosphere of the Zans was off the hook. It was a place where most folks came to dance and have a good time.
The only thing that was started in Chi town was the name house music. Here in NJ we called our music club music. Eventually everything with the 4 on 4 beat became known as house music. House was the term used to describe what was being played at the Warehouse where Franky Knuckles played. He played music with jersey, New York, and the Phila sound/influence. This is the foundation that house was built on. The Jersey/Garage sound happen before the word house even came into existence.
@BTman57 Thanks for post that REAL message about House and Club Music! I remember living in Central Jersey and use to get both the New York and Philly radio stations. After both cities finished their Hip-Hop shows on Friday and Saturday nights they would play, what we called it back in the day, "Club or Garage Music, from two to about five o' clock in the morning. This was in the early 80's, way before House Music came around.
at 0:31 thats abi!..we use to buy records from her back in the club days when we was realy into dj-ing..she was real cool and knew her music and she also did a lil dj-in herself
Jersey needs more love Larry Levan spent most of his time downtown Jersey City N.J. I know because I was there with him. I remember seeing Marshal Jefferson and Loose Ends at the Zanz. And being at the Garage, The World and the reopening of Studio 54.

There was no place like the Zanzibar. Well, you had the Paridise Garage in NYC. That place was slamming as well. But the Zans..........Sheeeit, that place was the bombidggy. I can see Abrahms in his rain coat and umbrella rat now :-)
I went to Zanzibar, I LOVED TONY, especially on the KISS Saturday Night Dance party. But I'm sorry, Zanzibar could not hold a candle to THE GARAGE or the LOFT for that matter. Those 2 clubs was what it was all about Sorry. Zanzibar was cool, but it wasn't the Garage, and what was with the carpeting on the dance floor, where are going to throw the powder/
All I can say is, I had PLENTY of punch!! You saw them ALL there, all the greats!
NYC Peech Boys,(Man Friday), George Krantz, Edna Holtz, Sharon Redd, Grace Jones, Sylvester, yes, and even Madonna...lol have to mention Lolita. It was the best 10 years of hangin out. I tried other places after that, but nothing compared. LONG LIVE PARADISE GARAGE!!
Man, I'm feeling old and homesick at the same time. Happy Birthday Tony at Zanzibar, anyone? The Peppermint Lounge? Broad and Market, Modell's, Nobody Beats The Wiz? Italian hot dogs and icees, South Orange Ave. Remember Woolworth's? Haven't ridden on the PATH train in years. And of course, Saturday nights...WBLS, KISS FM, Merlin Bob, Naeem Johnson, and Tony...
Laugh my butt off... Before it became the Lincoln and then Z - it was a Holiday Inn. I was the lifeguard at the pool in the summer of 1967. Who new it would turn into one of the hottest clubs in Jersey... Great music, from an old white boy.
Man i miss this place, use to walk to the 25 bus like 6am and head home...i especially would rock out to that song playing @5:55s...beginning era in House Musik, thank's for posting!
I'm 99% sure the artist is Wayne Gardiner (AKA Classic Man) - track may be a remix of "Love" or even "Mellow". It would probably be on the original Nervous Records. Sebthehousekid may be able to help you out.
yeah, that's it, chief! i used to have that mix on a tony humphries 98.7 kiss tape! my cousin stole the tape and shit! so, i've been without this song for years!
wtf happened to house music in NJ? I am 18 and I am desperate for a true house club in NJ to either just dance or DJ if I can't get in. There is nothing here but a lot of gay fake ass DJs-Owners-Promoters playing tired out radio shit which makes me vomit!!
i wish i knew. but there is a truely house music club party , once a month at club remix called HOUSE DANCE CONFERENCE in nyc. first thursday of each month more info go to myspace strenght music or house dance conference we're still here trying to have a spot in nj because we have so, much music......good luck peace dj david s and dj qu and joey anderson , nucuri .... exchange place!!
w/ Paradise Garage & The Loft and a few chicago clubs. The Zanz and Tony Humphries made a deep impact in this thing we call 'House'. It really can't be explained, you had to be there. But anyone that went there will tell you, the music was non-commerical, soulful, deep and very hot. People were about the music, releasing and having fun...
cos the new generation arent interested in heritage my friend, unless it sounds like it was made by an 11 year old with an electric razor...they dont wanna know.
I TRY TO TELL PEOPLE ALL THE THE TIME THAT HOUSE MUSIC STARTED IN NEWARK NEW JERSEY....DATE THIS TAPE....FOLLOW TONY HUMPRIES CAREER....he is the Father of House
wow thnx loved it i went when junior spinned also good onesi went to / red zone /the building/palladium/disco 2000/been trying to get house is a feeeling forgot who sings it can someone help me cuz thats the only one aint got that im misssing
wow... it feels like i just struck gold! thanks for posting. i was too young to party at zanz... but i'm old enough to know that it was the best of the best. jersey's in the house!!!
Please swirls 888 post the third part of this vid!!! It's pure life and very interesting.
Thanks. We love America but America love herself?! where is this spirit and life of 80's and 90's? now we have only gangsters, bitches, but, where is the herth? get up America!
well unfortunately i wasnt old enought to jam in the clubs back in those days but the early 90s was all about house for me listenin to my older brothers' mix tapes. Everything about it was great..the uniqueness of the sound and the soul the music had. Todays house and techno does not have that same soul feel anymore. Its not music anymore...just noise.
It's called Dance if I'm not mistaken. A friend of mine came to my house around 91 and said yo play this record they was playing this last night at Skate 22.
HOLY CRAP! ABBIE!!! Born & raised in Jersey here.. I used to shop at Movin' Records CONSTANTLY. I'd say at least 10% of my vinyl collection was pulled from those middle record bins right there.
I was never IN Zanz (too young) but I drove by it many a night and stopped for a bite to eat at the Burger King that used to be right down the block. You could literally feel the concrete vibrating blocks away from the club- no lie.
Last I heard Abbie was working in Education in NJ.
Yes,yes!...I had this video @ my Blockbuster I ran in Astoria,Queens...I played it out! My crew loved it...Tony Humphries will always be my fave dj!....
I'm missing 90's SO MUCH...
If i only had a time machine...
And just because of MTV, of course not...)) Those who were born in late 70's - early 80's will certainly get what i'm talking about...
Some say: "Of course! You were younger, that's why it is seems so much better than today!"

Tha Zanz had it's own flava-the hotel next door helped as well :-)
englila 2 years ago
All I can say is, I had PLENTY of punch!! You saw them ALL there, all the greats!
NYC Peech Boys,(Man Friday), George Krantz, Edna Holtz, Sharon Redd, Grace Jones, Sylvester, yes, and even Madonna...lol have to mention Lolita. It was the best 10 years of hangin out. I tried other places after that, but nothing compared. LONG LIVE PARADISE GARAGE!!

NYC Peachboy you are talking my language. I knew all those guy personally. And Man Friday

Great music, from an old white boy.

name of song & artist at 1:40?
devastatind 3 years ago
I'm 99% sure the artist is Wayne Gardiner (AKA Classic Man) - track may be a remix of "Love" or even "Mellow". It would probably be on the original Nervous Records. Sebthehousekid may be able to help you out.
mickeymusicstar 3 years ago
Sorry - it's Underground Solution - Love Dancin'. Does sound like Classic Man.
mickeymusicstar 3 years ago
yeah, that's it, chief! i used to have that mix on a tony humphries 98.7 kiss tape! my cousin stole the tape and shit! so, i've been without this song for years!

wtf happened to house music in NJ? I am 18 and I am desperate for a true house club in NJ to either just dance or DJ if I can't get in. There is nothing here but a lot of gay fake ass DJs-Owners-Promoters playing tired out radio shit which makes me vomit!!

dobermannS3 3 years ago 2
HK109, I'd say the Zanz is right up there
w/ Paradise Garage & The Loft and a few chicago clubs. The Zanz and Tony Humphries made a deep impact in this thing we call 'House'. It really can't be explained, you had to be there. But anyone that went there will tell you, the music was non-commerical, soulful, deep and very hot. People were about the music, releasing and having fun...

absolutely this video shows what was the house scene at USA and we can immagine which way house music is taking....the best one!
Lots of brazillian house music for all!
pamelabob 3 years ago
well unfortunately i wasnt old enought to jam in the clubs back in those days but the early 90s was all about house for me listenin to my older brothers' mix tapes.
