If you want to stay indoors though, make your reservations now as there are few places along the route. The Union Hotel and the Wallowa Lake Lodge are quite special. There are several hotels in Baker and La Grande and Joseph, only one small one in Elgin. And one or two in Halfway. Several small B and Bs in Hells Canyon too, but somewhat hard to find on the web.
