I have a relaxer and am planning to start locks with box braids. how long did it take for your braids to lock up, and how long did you wait before you cut your permed ends?
It took about 3 1/2 months for them to lock up.. It may have locked sooner but I washed them a lot in the beginning. I got 'em May 2007 and cut my ends March 2008 so not quite a year..
Im a dude and my hair was permed for braids. When i got dreads a few of them were like striaght. But they twisted because my hair was just so nappy. Even if i had the straight hair i could not cut my hair, i would just rock them like how white folks do it.
Im a dude and i had my hair activated for braids. thank god my hair was so nappy the dreads are ok. Now only a few in the front are semi straight/twisted. I know how you felt.
Even if they were all straight i could not cut it off, i would just have to rock them the way white people do.
hey i just started tryin to dread up using two strand twist about a motnh and a half a go but ive had all atural hair for two and half years but im to the point where i just dont what to do with mine at least someones look nice
sis u look so clean n natural after the cut..u look beautiful sis...thats all u needed was to cut the dead old hair off now u look really nice n new peace
You sound exactly like my boyfriend and friends. Haha They all said "if you gonna let it go then let it go. Why you keepin it?" haha I'm trashing it TODAY :o)
Thanks for that video. I am going throughthe transition of growing my locks for the second time, because I let society seep into me again...but it was momentary. I'm back to natural again, I'm just not at the point where I'm ready to reveal my new short hair. I wear a hats a lot!
You are so beautiful. Love you. Claim the power share the power. Its the Kemet way. I am so happy you could share your story. Iam truly proud of you. You've thrilled my hesrt.
You are so beautiful. Love you. Claim the power share the power. Its the Kemet way. I am so happy you could share your story. Iam truly proud of you. You've thrilled my hesrt.
I have used just about EVERYTHING.. Beeswax, Loc and Twist Gel, Honey, Regular Styling Gel etc. but right now Im using Organic Root Stimulators Loc and Twist Gel.. It is in a clear container with a purple top. I twist mine SO much that is why they stay neat but Ive heard that it is good because it thins them.. Hope that helps!
we use that on my son's hair for now, but because of his hair texture I find it to be a bit drying...so what we are going to try next and what has been recommended to me is Jamaican Mango and Lime which is available at Sally's Beauty Supply it is a whole line of natural products too
I have a question please...my daughter...my whole family really and I are going natural and she has shoulder length relaxed hair that has not been relaxed in four months or so, and I want to do dreads for her and found a method using a tool that will allow that...(natural hair care guide website calling interlocking) will I have to cut off her hair as well?
Thank you...we opted for twisting and then we rolled the ends on spiral rollers for consistency...really cut, so she has these Shirley Temple looking twistie things...she loves them and it is so healthy for her hair...thanks for the inspiration...as for me...I did the big chop a few days ago...loving it too
It sounds cute! Congrats! Raise your daughter to know that Black is beautiful as well as out NATURAL, NAPPY hair! Congrats to you as well.. I wish you the best on your journey! My dreads turned a year May 11th!!!
Don't get me wrong. I really admire black women regardless but I'm always stunned by those who stand out with a sense of pride and adoration of their natural beauty.
Thank You mi sistren! I knew that relaxed hair stemmed from white supremacy.. I ask people all the time why they get perms and they fail to answer the real reason. I had a perm because my standard of beauty was European, we as African Americans have a double consciousness but we have to regain our pride and realize Nappy=beauty! Our hair is the STRONGEST, most DURABLE, and BEAUTIFUL!
This was a major wake up call for me n made me think 'so that's why we mutilate ourselves, this is what I needed to hear to finally start the process', (even though I had thought about converting for months b4 hearing the show). It's sad how blacks' look@me like I'm mad when I wear my afro, not even white people give me those funny stares! Maybe I should say something to one of them next time to educate them!
I converted partly because I thought that natural hair looked nicer in texture and healthier, and partly because of a Black History Month radio show I heard when I was 15 (our BHM is in October, maybe to divide us from the rest of the black world?)
The show said that in the early 1900's we had to have relaxed hair to get on TV. because we had to look more european to be accepted n make the white man feel comfortable. So because our hair was more manageable like this, it became the trend!
Any who (as you often say), on a nicer note, I did notice your relaxed hair in a video n thought 'she needs to convert that', so was very impressed that you did! I had my hair relaxed for years until dec2001 when I stopped relaxing it and used extensions to grow my hair out! I left them in for 2-3months then went to the hair dressers to get it trimmed and treated, then repeated it again with new extensions etc until it was fully natural by the next year!
In the end, all d ignorant fools could say was racist jokes or things like 'nigger=shit'! By the end of it, I was surprised that I was not hurt by their comments and found them funny! It made me feel like I had won because they could only come back with pathetic racist shit, and no info to counteract my info or educate me! Perhaps it's because they knew that I was right n the truth hurt them, lol!
Don't be afraid of those racists! I suffered racial abuse in real life and on u-tube! The you-tube 1 lasted 4 about 2weeks cz I found a video called 'the word nigger part 1 n 2' n 'kramer's racist rants'. I couldn't help but leave comments battling racist ones to educate and inform others, especially my people (our people). This got me into a battle with ignorant whites n blacks who had no knowledge or facts 2 bk up their points! This led to more comment posts and explaining for me to do!
Hey, I live in London but am a Jamaican as you can tell from my name. It's 2am over here now n I am still up cz I was looking at some of ur videos n other related ones for the past 2 hrs! It's nice to know that there are other people that agree with me i.e. are deep, educated, conscious and have knowledge and love for self!
that was coragous lol ya hair was long yo! but i love it. i am starting the journey but i have a ooong way to go . i may just go your route n twist it n leave the perm on the ends for a while.
Your hair is very beautifully parted and your locs are fly. Enjoy your hair at every stage. Your hair does look better without the permed ends. Don't worry, your hair will grow long before you know it.
hey me too i just cut my permed ends off about 3 days ago check out my video, my dreads are locked also, i started with twist, my hair was like that at the ends it just wasn't that long. I do look alot better how long did you have your hair for? i am gonna probley do another video to day so check them out.
Good decision, I think. Along that same line, I am putting together a short video to be posted on youtube. It will be on hair 'treatment' by people of African descent. I will stop by to invite you to see it when after I post it.
Nice Vid. I'm sporting the "all-natural" myself. I've been doing so for about a year now and I want to grow my hair to the point where it reaches my back! It doesn't make sense to be ashamed of the hair that the creator gave you, whatever texture it may be.
but then again White Supremacy (Racism) doesn't make sense either ;)
Good luck to you & be sure to watch the many Natural hair care vids like Najahface & Canadianlioness, very good information.
Oh my goodness!!! THank u so much for this vid!!! I am in the process of transitioning my hair as well and i do not and did not want to just cut all my relaxed hair off. I am gonna do pretty much the same thing u did. let it grow out and then cut of the relaxed hair. i had not heard anyone else say that they did the same. Most everyone else just cut it down to the new growth and went from there. But i couldn't do that...lol. THanks luv!

Very nice. Very good. You do know, however, the kings and queens that were captured and put on slave ships had "natural hair" don't you? So having what is called "natural hair" ain't gonna save you from being mistreated on the basis of color.
But I cut mine all of years ago too! :) It was a personal choice in an effort to improve myself as an individual according to my idea or view of what I am and how I look and function as the best person I can be.
