Actually the 'American' version of hentai does mean anime/manga porn. It's a borrowed word from Japanese taken by American otaku. It's like 'metabo' from the video, it doesn't have the same meaning as the original but is a borrowed word nonetheless. I would venture a guess that most otaku know the difference very well.
