Eugenics came from Galton, Darwins cousin. Darwin supported eugenics. We are all, including Richard Dawkins, eugenicists on some level when we have children with someone with phenotypes we find attractive.
Eugenics could save lives. For instance, genetic engineering could tame what ABC News called "the gangsta gene," MAOA. This gene contributes to the high level of delinquent violence within the African race, as I detailed in this video:
Galton believed that civilization was fundamentally flawed in that it sought to protect the most vulnerable in society, the poor and the disabled. With any other species they would shortly die of starvation. Evolution is not an intelligent process, it has nothing to do producing "better" animals. Its a mindless natural process that's indifferent towards creating more complexity. Its not a model for society. Just because nature does it doesn't mean we should.
Charles Darwin recognized that our civilization stands in the way of natural selection by aiding the weakest in society but he said that taking away that protection would endanger our humanity, by getting rid of what he called "the noblest part of our nature". He said that education and infrastructure is a better means of advancing civilization. Darwin was not a eugenicist.
The variant of MAOA is actually called "the warrior gene" and was found to prevalent in the Maori population in New Zealand. American geneticists found that it was found in 60 % of Maori test subects as opposed to white New Zealnders. This is nothing suprising, variation of certain genes is common in different ethnic and racial groups. But the gene's link to aggression is poorly supported. There were similar claims about drunkeness, rugby and driving bulldozers. Its meaningless speculation.
I am sorry, but you are wrong. Despite some moderating comments, Darwin endorsed eugenics through his defenses of his cousin and one of his sons. He also made a number of pro-eugenics statements, like saying that those who are "in any marked degree inferior in body or mind" should "refrain from marriage," but "the most able should not be prevented by laws or customs from succeeding best and rearing the largest number of offspring."
You are also uninformed about MAOA. About 2/3 of African-American males have the 3R allele of MAOA compared to about 1/3 of whites. About 16 studies have looked at this allele and most found an association with violent delinquency in the presence of certain environmental triggers when compared to the 4R allele and those same triggers. The 2R allele has a much stronger association with violence. Perhaps more than 10% of African-Americans have it, compared to 1% of whites.
You should try explaining that MAOA is not a violence gene to people who suffer from Brunner syndrome. Since their MAOA gene does not function, they have an extreme predisposition to violence.
Again, you should inform yourself by watching my video:
As I said, the link between the so called "warrior gene" and delinquency is highly questionable. There have been many unsubstantiated links between genes and the character of people. And the mistake the Eugenicists of the early 20th century made was the saw intelligence and social contribution as "inheritable traits". This was before the discovery of DNA. And on those other quotes Darwin also said "yet I fear the utopian plan of procedure in improving the human race".
16 years of research has firmly proven that MAOA is a violence gene. It is backed up by MRI neuroanatomy, functional MRI, endocrine, hormone treatment, neurotransmitter dose effect, enzyme dose effect, gene expression dose effect, gene knock-out, animal studies, human studies, and multi-gene studies data.
Denying such overwhelming evidence would make any anti-creationist self-righteousness highly hypocritical, and such denial may qualify for schizotypal personality disorder diagnosis based on the DSM-IV criterion of magical thinking.
You misquoted Darwin. He said in a letter to his cousin, Galton, "Though I see so much difficulty, the object seems a grand one; and you have pointed out the sole feasible, yet I fear utopian, plan of procedure in improving the human race." Thus, Darwin was a eugenicist, who reluctantly had some misgivings about Galtons particular plan.
Here is another full quotation:
"Both sexes ought to refrain from marriage if they are in any marked degree inferior in body or mind;"
"but such hopes are Utopian and will never be even partially realised until the laws of inheritance are thoroughly known. Everyone does good service, who aids towards this end. When the principles of breeding and inheritance are better understood, we shall not hear ignorant members of our legislature rejecting with scorn a plan for ascertaining whether or not consanguineous marriages are injurious to man."
