  • Try hearing the electronic music experiments of Stockhausen and Ligeti, wich have influenced Floyd and Kraftwerk...

  • Man, I liked the timbres, They're very cool actaully... But I don't like the way you develop the themes. It's always square beats and lots of repetition. With such equipment, maybe you should try some more noisy stuff, like more textures, irregular tempos, atonalism, 12 tone technics and stuff...

  • sound track suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wheres the 1080p?

  • i love the book hugo cabret, i want to see the movie hugo, i was inspired to look up georges melies on wikepedia and looking at the movie a trip to the moon.

  • @clairebear7601 It Was A GREAT Movie! :D

  • Smashing Pumpkins sooo bit this

  • @aidan7100 agreed

  • Great job! It's refreshing to see someone do something worthwhile in this wasteful world. I don't know if the updated soundtrack could have been done any better by a non-studio entity. Thank you Threetails.

  • i looooove how everyone is all like squirming around and then the music starts to get even more techno! THEY R DANCING!

  • thumbs up if ur watching this on 1902!

  • i've been looking for this movie forever!! thank you

  • Look at all the Dumbeldors! :D

  • Does this mean the first people on the moon were wizards? :o

  • bleh I tought its the Acen song :P

  • I wonder if this film gathered controversy about these girls in shorts.

  • A Trip to the Moon was the FIRST science fiction film, and used innovative animation and special effects, including the well-known image of the spaceship landing in the moon's eye.

A Trip to the Moon is in the public domain sivce its copyright has expired.

It was named one of the 100 greatest films of the 20th century

  • Like if the Smashing Pumpkins video Tonight, Tonight brought you here!

  • Great score. Reminds me of "You're All I've Got Tonight" by The Cars.

  • This song is amazing! Can I get it anywhere?

  • The guys in the wizard hats at the start made me laugh so much xD

    Well, onto part 2 ^^.

  • so, gandalf was hired in those early days of nasa? 8)

  • i was lookin for good sci fi movies and this came up. a 14 min flick from 1902!! wtf. this was pretty awesome though.

  • incredible. i want to hire you.

  • Thumbs up if you were lead here by reading Hugo Cabret...

  • @PewPewKapowie Pretty soon by watching it.

  • @PewPewKapowie Haha I was lead here by the movie.

  • @PewPewKapowie Thumbs up if you predicted there would be some sort of attention-seeking comment relating to either the film, or the much less talked about graphic novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

  • I'll say this. It's more interesting than anything I've ever seen Tom Cruise or Al Pacino in.

  • @drystyx tom cruise yeah, al pacino no, cmon godfather and scarface?! he's a good actor man gotta give respect where it's due

  • Ekelhafte Penner.. erstmal googlen vor`m veröffentlichen...Ihr klingt nicht

    als ob ihr ACEN seid!

  • aaaaaaannnd....mute

  • This film is better than Inception

  • 3:16 men hitting an anvil that desnt even go on the spaceship....classic

  • @bear71399 this movie was made in 1902,that's how they rolled back then.I didn't even know the genre went back that far.

  • if you like to see the cinema history watch *BIRTH OF CINEMA* in youtube and enjoy.

  • mmmmm smashing pumpkins tonight tonight right? no? wrong video then jajajjajaja

  • O_O

  • The movie is great but I can't see how it took you 3 months to dub the soundtrack... I can do it in 5 minutes on windows movie maker... If you tried to integrate beats you really sucked at it...

  • masterpiece!

  • Your "original soundtrack" sounds like some novelty from a Ronco 70s infomercial being interfered with by a subnormal baboon

  • sme acid sht..

  • Vote up if you first saw and heard of this movie from The Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight Tonight." I knew about this but had never took time to watch the whole movie, now don't get me wrong I love silent films they are so artistic, charming, and cute at the same time. If you like silent film watch Marry Pickford's "The Sparrow."

  • the very first science-fiction movie?

  • @AnPeSv Yes and no. There were some short 2 minute clips out there, but this one was the first long running film (about 15 minutes) with a developing story line (1902)

  • haha at 0:36 his hat fell off FAIL

  • the music video for the song 'tonight' by smashing pumpkins is a homage to this film. It's like a modern remake

  • Watching this on mute with Tipper's "Illabye" playing in the background. Eerie...

  • @bebopalulahola Smashing Pumpkins Tonight Tonight is what I am playing in the background right now, because the video to that song is a salute to this movie.

  • yea this is awesome

  • Funk music in 1902? What?

  • Shouldnt be too long until the color version is fixed up and we will be able to see this MASTTER PIECE in color!

  • @TheCGIMaster I don't think this film would be as good in colour.

  • @hughpower123 Well obviously not but I heard about it on a Weird and wonderful world of early cinema thing

  • REMAKE

  • very gay music...and i don't mean that in the old timey sense

synthesisers and techno music is just plain homosexual sounding... i hope it dies with time

  • I love the naivety of this film, it adds humour. Hate the music, the original music is so much better.

  • Preferred it with the sound muted They obviously knew nothing about g-force as the people inside there would probably be dead! mankind figured it out in the end though i guess

  • I remember seeing parts of this film on TV when I was very young (1960's) I think it was something about Jules Verne, or the history of trying to get to the moon, etc. anyway - great sound track! I was looking up Melies because I'm researching the So. African Artist Wm Kentridge and he mentions Melies as an influence - now I can see why!

  • its amazing how people started to predict the future as far back as even before the Titanic set sail and before the first world war.

  • Teraz można władować 15 minutową wersje :D

  • Fantastic! I love it - really great score - and thanks for poting the movie as I need to watch it for class

  • this video was also the video for this couls be heaven for everyone by queen

  • I love it, thanks!

  • if you like to see the history of movies watch *BIRTH OF CINEMA* in youtube and enjoy

  • I love Hugo Cabret... well i dont LOVE it but i think its an EXCELLENT book.

  • the soundtrack is wonderful, I just love it! what's the title...??

  • Comment removed

  • @2010mustang2 - Um.... You really think this music was original to this SILENT film from 1904 (made 23 years before the first sound film)? LOL!

  • @Barndancer61 I mean't the music in the video was goo I just typed it wrong

  • I see I'm not the only one who looked this up because of the awesome Hugo Cabret book. :)

  • I read the book recently with my class. It's a very good book! We also did a dance to go along with it.

  • I read the book with my class recently and did a dance to go with it. It was very fun!

  • What a crazy ass movie. I love it.

  • I think the music is horrible... doesn't go with the film at all. But thanks anyway!

  • Great idea, and nice music. I wish it matched up to the action more precisely, but you should definitely do more.

I've written a shot-by-shot analysis of this film that people might be interested in if they need an explanation:

  • George Melies, the creator of this movie, is a character in the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, a book about a 12-year-old boy trying to fix his deceased dad's automaton. It's a great book! Great movie too!

  • Its a shame really, the french and british pioneered film, Lumire, Melies, Smith, Max Linder, and yet when the first world war came, we stopped, giving the americans a chance, and they never gave it back, if ww1 didnt happen then, imagien what film would be like today.. Hollywood may have not even latest

  • very very good

  • ZATAN

  • comon! this is a silent movie no music LOL.

  • I love georges Melies with all my heart if i could have lunch with anybody in the world it would be him, if he was still alive....

  • It's hard to believe that all of those people are dead now.

  • interesting choice of music makes the movie so much more .... um... annoying!

  • OW FUCK MY EYE

  • i first saw this in the bill nye the science guy episode about the moon :)

  • Once again I recognize that I like silient movies much better with contemporary music

  • To think that this was made before planes could actually fly.

  • That book was epic.

  • MOON

  • Awesome work.

  • me and my class are reading the invention of hugo cabret we are we about to finish it. hay!

  • i just finished that book

  • dis movie is in the invetion of hugo cabret ^o^ dat book is awsome i read it in one day

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf I read it in 1 day 2. Thats why I looked this up.

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf

I was so proud of myself that I made that connection too!

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf

    i LOVED it

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf woot! :D... that book was awesome! :D... i read it in one day as well.... one day, meaning today :P

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf im still reading it :DD

  • @shadowisbeastandstuf me too! i just finished it!! i love it soooo much!!!!

  • what the hell is going on in this movie? O_O

  • @numba1fattboy2k I am so happy we have sound now days imagen if AVATAR had no sound in it!

  • im reading the book called the invention of hogo cabret iit is asomee so far

  • i love how the Smashig Pumpkins based the music video for Tonight, Tonight after this movie

  • Jeez I'm pretty sure you could not have picked worse music.

  • This si so fantastic. I can not belive I am watching this 107 year old film. I am loving every second of it.

  • if you want to hear the real soundtrack, just turn off your speakers. there was no sound in 1092

  • Comment removed

  • well, there was probably still no sound in 1092 (!)

  • lol, i found this searching abput georages melies, because im reading, The Invention Of Hugo Cabret and it has him in it and at school they pointed out a website about him and i clicked the link and now im here XD

  • In my passive-agressive ironic assholeness I forgot to say I LOVE this song, and keep coming to this video just to hear it. Great job!

  • I LOVE that they used to build 2D models for their sets and props -- like the rocket, cannon, townscene -- but just paint them to look 3D. CLASSIC!! Just shows how strongly film was dominated by theatrical precepts.

Kinda disappointed you didn't use the whole film in one vid'

  • this made my life. i was watching it to study for my international history on cinema class and i was about to shoot myself in the face from all the silent films when this amazingness happened. you are my hero

  • OK that is not the original music. I'm sure.

  • Maybe IF YOU HAD READ THE VIDEO INFO you'd know what the music was.

    But you didn't.

    So you don't.

    Idiot.

  • I'm sorry I did not mean to offend. I meant it as a joke.

  • Successful troll's success is undermined by explaining it

  • I'm glad Pointdexter sethpajak is here to set the record straight.

  • Oh, and I would'nt realy call this flick science-fiction. I think it's more just pure FANTASY ( with a bit of humor ) rather than sci-fi,... theres a diference I think.

  • I notice, with alot of these realy old movies, that there are'nt many cuts,..all the individual scenes occure in long continuous shots,..and theres hardly any camera movement,..the viewer remains still without any pans, zooms, close-ups or recedes.

  • This is just pure good

    love it forever

  • smashing pumpkins for the win..please..

  • music kindof scared me until i read that it was new haha. "jeez they had the resources for this kind of music??" always read the info part people. thanks for the film.

  • I'm amazed at how few peopel seem INCAPABLE of reading the description.

I like what you did with this, but I feel like the sound is a bit too trance heavy, and doesn't sync with the action enough... good effort though!

  • i agree. it would work better if it was slightly toned down. but it was a pretty good selection none the less

  • It's not original sound

  • u really should change the music... u must!!! fuck! it's a fuckin crime!

  • classic and for its time it was very out of the ordinary.

  • this is fantastic!

  • guys mute ur speakers ...............

  • way to ruin this film with a crappy soundtrack

  • Great movie, silly soundtrack.

  • original sound? :O i dont think this is the original sound its too new for that :D

  • great movie!!!

  • this is great :)

  • the score makes for a trendy take on a beloved classic?

  • agg horrible music

  • its 1902 jackass. The whole movie is good. If you cant apriciate the first Sci-Fi film of all time, nobody wants you on youtube.

  • its because they had imagination back then

  • its base on a book so its not that imaginative

  • Think about it...if not for films like this at the very beginning, icons like Jack Black and Adam Sandler wouldn't have careers...for that reason alone you might want to think twice before writing it off as "stupid". =D

  • This is truly inspired - nice job!

  • if you like old films watch * BIRTH OF CINEMA.

  • Wow, you did a great job with the music really. LOVE IT.

  • this is awesome man you should do this with more silent films.

  • this is the oldest movie i have ever watched

  • check the lumiere brothers' films made in 1985. and i think there are edison movies made in 1984.

  • I think you mean 1885 and 1884, respectfully, do you not? ;D

  • yes! thanx. it's the habit.

  • i heard this is the first movie ever released in theaters

  • u heard wrong then. There were many other films made before this. They were all very short films showing people doing everyday things. This one stands out in particular because it's 21 minutes long and most films back then were only 2 minutes.

  • Hold up though. While I cannot confirm that what uiopytrre heard was correct, they may be thinking more so of buildings constructed for the sole purpose of presenting films. "A Trip to the Moon" was by no means the first movie presented to the public, but not all of the earlier films were presented in a true-to-form "movie theater" either. Rather, they were often presented as special events at a local cafe, and so forth.

  • i am so glad this video has been posted, I watch it weekly and it never gets old!

  • Long live George Melles!!!

  • Johnny Depp will star in a film adaptation of "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" in 2011. However, it was my love of classic sci-fi that brought me here. Great film! Thanks for the post!

  • i love the book the invention of hugo cabret! i hope the movie is good!

  • Oh you wacky science!

with your big guns and funny beards, what will you think of next?!?!
