@wkbfutewc Concerning your last point, I read somewhere that it's a widespread misconception that Kane's father was abusive. The line "where you can't get at him" didn't suggest abuse back then.
i love this movie. and i love how orsen welles uses deep focus to bring out the balance of power between characters....he was a genius when it came to directing.

This is just so brilliant.
One minute and forty six seconds until the first cut. from the boy playing with the sled to Agnes Moorhead opening the window.
Only actors who did their apprenticeships on stage could have done this scene.
A great piece of directing too. And the cinematography is just brilliant.
A critical piece to the whole story, she wants him away from his brutal father and Charlie never knows real happiness again. It's covered with snow.
