Hij is een goeie gitarist maar hij heeft weinig kijk op het hele geheel. Die overgang en het einde klinken echt nergens naar. Dan kun je wel de meest complexe en snelle lickjes spelen maar het gaat om de context waar je in speelt. En in net neerzetten van die context is Jan niet de beste.

Like he once put it himself, in an interview; "It's not so much what you're capable of, but who you know" and most of his more famous colleagues are / were living in the States or the UK, where you got the right contacts and musical culture.

Things are somewhat different, now, but when Akkerman started it was almost impossible to make it big for a musician, coming from the Netherlands. So, considering that and the fact he didn't make the most accessible music, he was still rather successful.

Dat hij niet zo'n grote ster is waardeer ik alleen maar. Jan is nou eenmaal een apart iemand. Een beetje eigenwijs en zeer zeker niet iemand met ster allures.

Jan behoort gewoon tot de besten.

@MrPieterWittenberg Sorry, late reactie maar las je commentaar nu pas. Hoezo geen intenationale erkenning? Werd in 1973 door Melody Maker uitgeroepen tot beste gitarist van de wereld. Speelde met Cozy Powell, Ice-T, Alan Price, BB. King, Paco de Lucia en ga zo maar door. Misschien geen miljoenen sales of volle stadions, maar zeker erkenning, vooral in de muziekwereld, misschien niet in de muzakwereld, maar dat wil hij niet eens volgens mij.

Dat mag je vinden. Ik kan me voorstellen dat zo'n grootse talent niet altijd even gelukkig is als hij Clapton op wereldpodia voor de zoveelste keer Layla hoort spelen, met een solo over de pentatonische ladder. Ik kan me voorstellen dat de schoen dan gaat wringen.

@MrPieterWittenberg Ik weet niet of Jan sowieso een 2e gedachte wijdt aan de zoveelste pentatonische ladder van wie dan ook? Hij speelt gewoon zijn eigen muziek, die gewaardeerd wordt door zoveel mensen, er hoeft dan ook helemaal nergens een schoen te wringen. Misschien trekt hij geen volle stadions en verkoopt geen miljoenen cd's, maar waardering en erkenning kreeg hij al vanaf het eerste begin van zijn muziek-carrière, bekijk er de oude BBC opnames maar eens op na. greetz.

One of the enduring features of Jans playing is the occasional clanger and how he gets out of the mess. Most of the time, its because other than the 'general theme' of a song, he improvises them differently every time he comes to the stage.

To do this you need 3 things:-

1) A great backing band

2) Many years worth of stock licks that you can instantly adapt and transpose to any situation

3) Loads of skill and confidence

Jan has all 3 in abundance !!

Although he did drop a couple of clangers.. and he is definately sick and tired of playing Sylvia and Hocus Pocus.... can`t blame him I guess. But we loved it. Going to see Focus in 2 weeks, that`ll be fun aswell.

Was that in York? cause I was there as well and it was so funny when he missed those couple of bars in Sylvia. WIllie and Coen nearly passed out laughing so much. But as you say a fantastic show and when you compare Jans playing now to that of his contemporaries, he still rocks !!

Love Robben Ford, seen him several times. Eric Johnson too. Gambale is an awesome technician (sweep king), but he doesn't always turn me on. Dont know much about any solo Landau work, but am aware of his amazing session credits.

Ive seen Focus with Niels twice in the last year or so and he's a wonderful player (like Catherine was), but he's a little too smooth for me. Focus was all about improv and energy and that X-factor that Jan had with Thijs

When I first heard 'Focus' I must have looked like I just seen a ghost. It was the most unbelevable guitar I ever heard!!!
