Actually the Cosworth designed turbo V6 wasn't that bad, but it was only used by the disastrous Lola-Haas team and by Benetton in 1987. For 1988 Benetton planned using the Ford Cosworth turbo V6 but in the end thought they should get a headstart for the new NA era and thus settled on the Cosworth DFR V8
Gordon Murray who designed the all dominated McLaren MP4/4 of 1988 said:"We couldn't believe our luck when we heard that Benetton decided not to use the turbo engine 1988."
@McLarenMercedes see this is what f1 needs, look, back then teams could choose between different types of engines and stuff, alll of which produced exceptional racing and fun, now its all homolongated bullshit for money and sponsors, fuck that we want racing.
@nickflame9 but this era was dominated by Mclaren and Williams, yes the power was awesome but the noise nothing like today. I think the racing today is even better but I agree about the homolongated stuff but for me the early 90s was the best era for development and technology..
@DTFW18 yes, but the new breed of cars meaning, 09- now just suck, they should have stuck with the 2004 cars, awesome power, sound and speed, all they had to do was take away the traction control, and then you would have seen racing, because that was the peak year of f1, the only reason schumacher won so easy was because of the TC, the FIA is destroying the sport, i mean every year new season they change the rules, i think it's the only sport that does that nonsense, IF IT AINT BROKE....
this pre computer, high precision engineering is just amazing to watch! True expertise in so many areas coming together. I had no idea they used actual wood carvings! Its amazing!
dont get me wrong, that carving is amazing work, but why not use a cnc and cut it from steel? it seems that it would leave less room for error, and it would probably be cheaper, and deffinatly faster, and several exact copies would be easily obtained...
i find mildly amusing watching the engineers work on the engines with business clothes. As an avionics tech, i wouldn't have touched it without plastic gloves(thin ones).
To be honest If they keep wanting to make it safer and more global freindly then i think it would be cool if they just set a 900cc engine size limit and let them run free with that. That would definately bring new small engine turbo technology to the table.
@omid11 Eh? The cars are just as fast as they've always been, ok, they haven't got the ultimate power of the turbo or V10 engines but aerodynamics mean cornering speeds are higher, the racing is the closest it's been in years and as for the safety aspect, i personally don't to see people getting killed or injured so it can only be a good thing imo.
Very very interesting:-) I just read that from 2014 F1 will run on turbocharched 1.6 litre engines! I am really looking forward to that. Of course it is because of all the global warming stuff... Lets hope the FIA will not put to many restrictions on the engines, so we once again can enjoy watching and hearing these turbo-monsters!
@JJKjaer I think part of the appeal of the sound of these 1980's engines is the relatively low pitch of the sound, caused by low revs, as opposed to the scream of ultra high revving modern formula 1 engines. hearing the same sound again as in the 1980's might require a limitation on maximum revs..
I don't know for sure, but that makes sense to me.
Actually those 80's turbo motors revved very high ! Upto 14-15,000 RPM in the case of the V6's. Some of them even had pneumatic valves ! The slightly muffled sound was caused by the turbo restriction in the exhaust removing energy from the exhaust gas. Expect the 1.6's to rev even higher but they will have strictly limited boost pressure and fuel, so the spectacle will be slightly diluted.
The definition of "tifosi" is extremely wrong. It comes from the greek "Typhos" (fever) and it's just the italian term for a very strong fan of something - be it a race or football team.
Brilliant, saw this when it was first broadcast and still have both parts on VHS !!
Title is incorrect though, this is far from how F1 Turbo's started, that accolade goes to Renault Sport in 1976. They started the whole ball game !! Initially they were the joke team of the grid but after they sorted the initial reliability problems and started to out qualify everyone by whole SECONDS per lap, they all took notice !
I don't even know much about cars or F1, but this was just great. Watched the whole thing! Not even sure what I was watching when I clicked this suggestion :)

Fascinating how they made F1 engines back in the day. Even for the 80's it was very old school- woodworkers produced the molds for a 1,000 bhp turbo monster.
The awesome thing about this video and the tech see in it is the fact that only now the last few years this tech is coming to mainstream use in everyday cars lol.
Anyone who for any reason thinks that F1 wont be worth watching in 2014 can simply fuck off! F1 doesnt need you! The Turbo era in the late 70's & 80's revolutionised F1 & I expect this new formula will be refreshing.
If i could change 1 thing it would be allowing 2.4L V8's & 1.6L V6 Turbo engines....why should'nt their be an "option" like we have with tyres?
@flipsidedogchop Didn't work in 1987/8. I agree that turbos are hugely attractive from a spectators point of view, but there's never been an effective equivalency formula.
@flipsidedogchop Perhaps the other turbo runners were closer to the atmo pace that year, but Honda and Ferrari were both looking at 1000bhp on 2.5bar boost if turbos had ran another season, a good 350bhp more than the best the 3.5 V10 Honda produced in 1989.
Also, apart from an extremely low crank assembly on the Honda V6, there was nothing revolutionary about the MP4/4. It was very closely related to the '86 Brabham conceptually.
@flipsidedogchop No, Brabham ran a reclined cockpit two years earlier on the BT55 BMW, also designed under Gordon Murray. This car was cleverer than the McLaren in that the BMW Four was laid on it's side and a special asymmetrical Hollinger transmission was used.
Obviously the Brabham team hadn't the resources of McLaren when it came down to the final execution of the concept, but they were the pioneers.
The BMW lay-down unit was troublesome and the driver pairing far inferior.
@flipsidedogchop: The turbo-engines that will be in F1 are limited by the rules in so many areas, that by far it won*t be as interesting & spectacular as in the 80s & the sound won't be as fascinating. They should have given only one limitation, tha's a fuel-consumption-limit, but that possibly could have let to the dominance of one engine manufacturer & that's what F1-management doesn't want.

@Marcus666Sund Its going to be inline 4s, and turbocharged. very similar to the 80s f1 era. should be good. i will miss the sound of a screaming v8 at 18000 rpm though
"several hundred f1 engines do not warrant an investment in computer aided design. all that's needed is a notebook, a calculator, and two centuries of engineering know-how" ..... I chuckled a bit during this quote lol
Nice video! 1 thing about testing a turbo engine setup without a turbo(big restrictor) in the exhaust=EPIC FAIL! Back pressure anyone? Crossover point? It was 1986 but still. ;-)
@Southslider51 Not so my friend. Back pressure was myth from the 60's F1. They found they gained power with smaller pipes. They mistook this as they gained back pressure. What actually happened is velocity increased because they were low revving engines (larger pipe, longer to fill), smaller pipes filled quicker and created a vacuum behind pulses pulling next out = less restriction, higher velocity, more power to the flywheel. Bar no boost, problems come from the now, low compression
@Southslider51 Just to add to the 60's, if the v8's revved past 5k then they would of seen greater benefits of the larger pipes. Back pressure is ALWAYS bad. A turbo places massive restriction on the exhaust and DOES inherently lose power, not gain it. Obviously the boost generated more than makes up for it. Low compression however, does lose you power, lots of it
The best video I ever saw concerning Engine Prototypes and Formula1. Thank you very much!

Low compression however, does lose you power, lots of it

hah, williams using only 7.5 mil a year back then. those were the days. nowadays it's more closer to 200-300 mil.

LOL at 16:00 - that look when you know youve just lost the engine. I know that feeling well. Gets you in the pit of your stomach.
