@wheeyeonwhang If you hit just barely to the top, bottom, left or right, you're gonna have some spin. But if you have the correct form, it will still float.
Challenge: Post a video of yourself serving that many in a row with no spin.
@wheeyeonwhang sure. float serves are what I prefer. I guess I was just being a little unfair cause ive been playing with collegiate D1 players for a few years.
However, I wasn't saying her serves are bad. just saying it has slight spin. but shes young and her form is good still. those were pretty solid serves. just being nitpicky.

@ski4life19 Float serves are definitely harder to pass than top spin serves. Top spin serves are usually really powerful, but they drop at a predictable spot on the court. Float serves can move like crazy though, depending on how you contact the ball... sideways, up, down.
@kimchipowered Visit our site and search "float serve" for a more detailed explanation. This serve is difficult to master but once you've got it, it will be like second nature. Happy ACING!
is your back suppose to arch that much? i float serve and some of my coaches were worried that i was going to damage ( i arch it about as much as she does )
@ndawgballerz Well, it's difficult to define upper body strength, but what people don't realize is that it's more about the speed of your arm and less about the muscle behind it. When hitting a volleyball, arm swing speed determines how hard the ball is hit. I played volleyball with a girl who could hit the ball so hard it would bounce far higher than the net but she could barely lift a 45-lb barbell.
Oh and don't discount the importance of core strength in volleyball.
@vballdrills thank you, in that case is there any relation at all between arm speed and arm muscle? If so, what muscles are involved and how can you develop them? I'm wondering more in the context of a serve as opposed to actual hitting.
@novHeavens IMO, in high level volleyball, front line players shouldn't receive any serve unless absolutely necessary (super short serve). That said, at various levels, front row passers are needed. In which case, I would advise that a front line player take this serve with her/his hands. All in all, it's a tough serve to receive from any position on the court. That's why it's my favorite!
@novHeavens Front line players never receive this serve or a top spin serve. The only serve a front line player should ever think about taking is a very soft one which just dribbles over the net or a net chord serve that has left the back row stranded.
At poor levels of volleyball you will see front row players trying to take serves, especially if they are better than weaker back row players, but you should work towards receiving on back 3 only.
The reason some of you think it's easy is probably because you're not serving it as a floater... floaters are a lot more difficult than serving a ball with top spin...
@SteDeRaver there's nothing "normal" about the way you hit the ball on floater, which is why most players serve a top spin when they start playing. :)
Darn, this is nice.

she makes it look so easy. its so hard for me not to put top spin in my serve
babypop9009 3 months ago
@babypop9009 try a lower toss. if you're getting top spin, you're likely hitting the top of the ball instead of the direct center.

@vballdrills basically the serve tricks the opponent into thinking it's going straight but then it moves from left/right?
i really want to learn this serve but i don't know how ):

another way you can do it is by stopping you arms momentum as soon as you hit the ball, this also lets you do drop float serves

i have a question.. so if i want to use this to serve, you put the ball up and slap it,right?
MegaPinkPenguin 1 year ago 2
@MegaPinkPenguin keep your wrist firm though. contact the ball a little lower from center. it'll sway side to side like crazy if done nicely.
