Ok just wanted to add that I installed CEN pipe yesterday on my 5.9 and WOW amazing difference. I left the cone in but took baffle out for max performance. You notice the difference before you touch the throttle (Alot deeper, cooler starting engine). I have also tried the RD Logics quad stinger, stock 5.9 polished, ofna 086. I will stick to the CEN.
i gotta question, i wanna put a 5.9 engine in my savage 4.6? if i put a integy rear quad exhaust or a tsais rear dual exhaust will it help the 5.9 engine run cooler and perform better?
ah i understand now thats the maxinum for performanace and longevity i still turn it off at 257 reduces wear on the piston sleeve and crankshaft i get enough performance that way even tho i only got the 4.1 in mine at the moment 2 years of running its lasted awhile its time for me to get a new engine getting the 5.9 seems quick enough and has the torque im wanting with the right gear ratio i can get it to excel at high speeds
Temperatures of 250-270 are ideal for performance and engine longevity. If they start to creep towards 300, then you should richen up the fuel mixture or shut them down.
i need to just mod a pipe hanger and uninstall the baffle (by the way what is the baffle wheres is it located) and get a modded header or does the header come with the cen 7.7 pipe thanks
The baffle is inside the pipe. It looks a bit like a revolver cartridge. Don't remove the cone, it improves performance. The stock header will work, but I modified the CEN header by cutting 1/2" off the end and 1/2" out of the middle. If you bought your pipe on Ebay, it will probably come with the header.
removin the baffle does not improve performance, it reduces it, its the baffle that returns the puse 2 the engine and if u think about it the pipes r designed 4 maximum performance with the baffle
hey i wanna get a pipe for my savage xl witch will make it wheelie and go well fast what 1 shal i get im so confused with al the names so i thought i would ask u
Buy a CEN pipe on Ebay and give it a try. Most "big block" pipes are designed for .21-.28 engines. The CEN pipe is designed for a .46 engine, so it is better suited to the 5.9 (.36).
It allows the RPM's to climb quicker(better acceleration) and it makes the 5.9 run cooler. Until someone designs a pipe that is designed for the 5.9, the CEN pipe is your best bet in my opinion. The smaller pipes are too restrictive and can't produce the raw torque and acceleration that the CEN pipe can.
ok well im only 13 so..... and my parents wouldn't put there credit card number on the computer, yah ebay is cheap i got the chassis plates for my savage x along time ago with my bro!
Yes. There is a lot of compression until the engine is broken in. I broke the end off the cord twice while trying to break it in, but I haven't had any problems since.
Thanks! Watch my sand hill bash video to see this engine and pipe combo REALLY put to the test! I got my CEN pipe on Ebay for $11 including shipping. You will just need to modify the pipe hanger to mount the longer CEN pipe.
I bought one of these cen 7.7 gst pipes after i saw this video, fitted it today to my sts 30 it sounds mutch better but i have not taken it out for a spin yet, you say take the baffle out, i tried that but you need this in to hold the rubber seal in place, so i could see anyway.
They were both tuned to about 250-260 degrees. I could not get any performance out of the 5.9 and HPI combo without leaning it out until it ran at 275-280. I'm still using the CEN pipe and a modified GST 7.7 header (larger diameter tubing). The 5.9 screams and I can easily keep the temps below 260 and still get better performance out of it than I could with the HPI pipe. The CEN pipe is far less restrictive.
Did you take the baffle out of the CEN pipe? If not, then you won't get maximum performance out of the pipe. You also need to re-tune the K5.9 after installing the CEN pipe. You need to richen up the high-speed needle quite a bit.
i couldnt help but notice that you didn't temp it after you put the stock pipe on, so it is only what you say. it also sounds like you did richen it up, it also sounded like you were not on the throttle like you were with the CEN pipe. sounds a little biest to me!! but this is just my opinion i tryed the CEN pipe on my XL and i did not have these same results.
You will need to bend a custom pipe hanger. I just used one of the stock Savage hangers and bent it to suit. I also cut a small piece out of the roll bar where it mounts to the chassis plate to allow the pipe to fit tighter to the chassis.
when you put the savage xl engine on the 4.6 savage was there any problems mounting it or did it fit nice? im thinking of putting the 5.9 on my savage ss .25.
I'm not sure what would work with the 8.0. You may be stuck with the stock pipe because of the unique exhaust layout. The CEN pipe is probably too big to fit between the engine and the shock tower.
The Savage XL with the stock pipe sounds terrible in my opinion. It sounds like the pipe is suffocating the K5.9. Other people have been having problems with the temps being too high when the engine is leaned out for peak performance also. That is a symptom of
A)a restrictive pipe and/or
B)a pipe that is too small
My K5.9 runs better with the CEN pipe and I bought one for $11, so I'm going to use it.
If you want to run your engine at temps higher than 275, that's your choice, but it's not smart.
Bollocks is all i can say, no way can a pipe make so much difference to the performance of an engine, when ever you fit a new pipe you will always have to re tune the engine, if you use the hpi pipe and tuned it properly it will perform the same as the CEN pipe did or if not better
I think you need to do some research on tuned pipes. Different pipes can and will make a huge difference in the way a nitro engine performs. I could run the engine leaner with the HPI pipe, but then the temperature was close to 300! If I can get better performance with a different pipe where the temps stay under 260 and the engine is easier to tune, I will use it. The larger the engine, the bigger the pipe should be, so using a pipe that was designed for .21-.28 engines on a .36 is pointless.
Watch my other video with this engine. I was using the HPI pipe and it was running at 275 and it still sounded like it was running rich. The HPI pipe is just TOO SMALL! It will not allow the exhaust to exit quickly enough. That's why it bogs on the bottom end and goes flat on the top end.
Ok just wanted to add that I installed CEN pipe yesterday on my 5.9 and WOW amazing difference. I left the cone in but took baffle out for max performance. What is or who makes this "LRT" pipe you speak of?
Revomad1 3 years ago
i think it is perfectly. and i gotta a question, what is the tires name??? on my xl, there are goliath tires but these are more beautiful... :))
karakahin16 3 years ago
They are Pro-line "Big Joe" tires on Axial 8 spoke oversize wheels.
Revomad1 3 years ago
Tires are not beautiful they are tires.

Thanks !!!
Delfino6464 3 years ago
That's interesting. Does it perform better than the HPI pipe?

can u imagine if i put the 5.9 engine on my savage3.5...!!!??it will run better then the savage xl...lol

I wouldn't recommend it unless you have upgraded to the newer 4 gear differentials. You could always upgrade them after they break though.

I don't have any experience with either of those exhausts, but I have heard that they aren't very good for performance.

I think you are thinking of the cone. The cone should stay in, but the baffle should be removed.
As far as I know, the baffle is only there to reduce the noise level of the exhaust.

I'm not sure. The K5.9 is all about bottom end torque and acceleration. That's all I care about in a monster truck. It's plenty fast though.
Revomad1 3 years ago
roughly how fast does this beast go??
dandim23 3 years ago
roughly how much does the CEN GST 7.7 tuned pipe cost in a hobby shop?
burtonkidd 3 years ago
$35-40 maybe? Ebay is definitely the way to go.

If you are only 13, I would recommend you stick with a 4.6 (.28) engine. A 4.6 will be a lot easier on parts, while still providing lots of power.
Revomad1 3 years ago
do you have the pull start on that?
my uncle got a savage xl k5.9 and there was so much comprestion the pull start cord snaped

Yes. There is a lot of compression until the engine is broken in. I broke the end off the cord twice while trying to break it in, but I haven't had any problems since.

You need to leave the cone in and it should seal up fine with that. The baffle is the other odd shaped piece in front of the cone.

would the cen pipe fit on the 4.6 savage or is the stock 1 good enuff?

I think the CEN pipe would be a bit too big for a 4.6cc (.28) engine. It was designed for a 7.7cc (.46) engine.

I'm not sure. I don't know of any other pipes that are as big as the CEN pipe. It's about 7.75" long and 1.75" in diameter.

thats a big pipe!

ill have to get this pipe once i get my savage xl in a month or so. just have to sell my nitro rustler first lol...

hmm i wonder why then if you search savage xl and watch some of the high speed runs with the hpi tuned pipe the performance is brillant.
