I've been through Delaware Water Gap alot. I once saw a speeding freight train pass through there in 1976, amazed that trains could move that fast through there with a few wicked turns. I haven't been there since 1994, unsure what railroad company runs through there now. I did see a tree or two growing on the viaduct over I-80 on th NJ side, but I think there is still one track up there, courtesy Google Earth.
@NYLifeInNJ - I noticed that later when I took a second look at Google Earth. However, there's a track that runs on the PA side south of the old DL&W / E-L viaduct - such track might've been part of the CNJ at one time, according to an old map I had. This track runs south to a power plant or factory just before the old 5-span truss bridge crosses the river. I could see about 2 dozen hopper cars at the power plant / factory, so this track was active at the time of the photo.
@author That was actually a part the Lackwanna "Old Road" prior to the construction of the Cutoff. The bridge that the line used is actually about 5-10 miles south of the Cutoff viaduct. The current M&E to Hackettstown was actually a part of the "Old Road."
@indie1361 There have been two railroad accidents at this spot: the first on May 18, 1948, and the second in September 11, 1975.
In the first derailment, the locomotive jumped the tracks. The cars stayed on the tracks. It is rumored that the locomotive is still somewhere in the river mud, but there is little evidence of this.
In the second accident, two engines and thirteen cars of a freight train went into the river. Most of the wreckage was cleaned up, but several cars remain.
Fajnie masz tam pawelk282. U nas, na Piachach, tak nie ma... Szkoda że troszkę "niemy" ten filmik. Jakąś muzyczkę dodaj jak na innych Twoich filmikach....
