The back ground is really bad, they needed to improve it to farther emphasize the dancing,.,.,A background that should reflect the ORIGINAL scenery of the Customs
@Julrashiddilangalen: Further more I'm trying to accurately represent Sama and Tausug culture through the music the best way I can without bastardizing the tradition unlike some dance companies ... so let me ask you something... have you made the effort to learn the dances and musical traditions of your culture? if so what do you know about Pangalay
@Julrashiddilangalen: Yes I'm not Tausug or Sama. Just an FYI to you, this dance is not a Muslim Dance. Its performed by Muslim Filipinos but it has nothing to do with the Islamic religion. Second of all, I do have a fair amount of understanding of the Pangalay and Igal dance tradition to know how its SUPPOSED to be performed and when a dance company is BSing the tradition. In fact you're right, i'm not a pangasik or a pangalay dancer.... I focus more on the kulintangan tradition...
There are many versions of the Pangalay dance. We don't go to the production value of the dance but look into the heart and soul of the original movements and music of this intricate dance. This dance portrays the dexterity of the arm movements as performed by the dancer. MABUHAY ANG KULTURANG PILIPINO! MABUHAY ANG PILIPINAS!
panget? bakit ? are you some bayanihan philippine dance troupe supporter that doesn't find this traditional/accurate performance of pangalay appealing to your stylized standards of stylized philippine folk dance or are you some arrogant know it all that has seen better pangalay dancers in the past??? please tell me your rationale for calling this ugly. otherwise you need shut the F*&^ up you C*&nt!
Nobody asked Dr. Kasilag? She copied/noted the dance when it was performed in PWU in the early part of 1970's as a scene in the drama presentation of my class ANG PAG-AGAW KAN NAPSA. Just ask the Ali family how painstaking we were on the dance movements, costumes, instruments, music. We even pulled strings to bring instruments and costumes via airplane thanks to Col Tiqui, the Elums, etc.. Anyone of you knows Jeannat, Pearlsia, and the other younger Ali sisters? Nah, ask them.
@pearlqf .... Interesting is the Ali family Tausug or Sama? who were kasilag's sources, and what gave her the artistic license to change the music? Its funny because I hear the bayanihan on tour album and the Pangalay music that's on the albusounds far removed from the Pangalay music i was exposed to from my fieldwork in the Sulu Archipelago region with the traditional kulintangan musicians and pangalay dance practitioners......
Dr. Kasilag noted that indeed it would be difficult to capture the music done by the Tausug kulintang and drums ensemble of 100% Tausug players because we had only one show. 1972? it was the era of few video. Ali family is Tausug, not Samal (so don't doubt it must have been the Samal version of the Malandi shaking of shoulders. Pangalay like folk performances are not copywrighted, hence the danger of variance. At least, Pangalay became popular after Dr. Kasilag saw it.
@pearlqf my aunty sitti airia sangkula askalani obeso was a pioneer member of the dayang dayang dance troupe here in davao. sabi niya na ang director daw nila ay si bapa' maing which is known by almost all old tausugs in our place! patay na sya matagal na. basta ang naririnig ko lang sa kanila na magaling daw talaga si 'pah maing in terms sa music and dances ng tausugs!
@Bernard1981 >> Bakit? tanungin kita may karapatan kb sayawin yan. Immitator k lang. If I know you were just into dancing. Emotionally you don't know what this dance for. kasi dancer ka lang. The lady who performed di nga xa dance but her connection to the music and it's meaning. Sabagy di ka musliim
THIS IS THE REAL THING FOR ALL YOU KNOW!!! Susinirapin: Anong pangalay ba alam mo? Yon bang version na parang MALANDI kagaya ng sa Bayanihan? Hala, you need to educate yourself. Read more and do research.
It's actually the very detailed and painstaking manner the embroideries are done on the habul that makes it really expensive. I have not seen one, too.
may habul tiyahian ang inah ko! tausug sya at marunong syang mangalay. dont wori, iaupload ko next time sayaw nya. tawag sa sayaw nya pangalay kamaasan. maraming BUNGA LIMA-hand gestures! very interesting kung makikita mo at masasabi mong ito ang halos mawala na na movement o real essense ng pangalay dance! tawag din sa kanila MAHANTAP-very slow!

@pearlqf do you recognize the two pioneer tausug troupes..the dalling-dalling and the dayang-dayang dance troupe?
kirammark 1 year ago
@kirammark
Mark, the dalling-dalling and the dayang-dayang dance troupes were
the few dance troupes I heard about way back early 70's.
I forgot the name of that nice man, medyo may edad na noon, who
could dance the kuntaw silat with such confidence! He also obliged us with his performance in PWU. I asked Pearlsia Ali
about the name of the guy, but she must have forgotten the name too... something like Ka----, gosh, memory lapse, sorry.
Those were the days...
