My father used to sing this song. Now he and my mother are both gone I am forgetting my Russian language but when I listen to Russian music I can feel them in my heart. Thank you. I loved this version. Greetings from Australia.
The song being sung here is NOT "those were the days" it's Дорогой длинною ("Dorogoy dlinnoyu"), it was written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.
THis song has only the melody in common the lyrics for "Days..." was written by Gene Raskin
At 1:06 he says Kazaki, ( cossack ) my father was a cossack from Rostov Don, my mom from Kiev, I was born in Brazil, and now living in Chicago, truly international, as this song, beautiful, muito legal, bonita musica
I actually like this version. It's not very classical, but is a very good one.I only knew the french and the italian version by Dalida. And I must say I really enjoy this music! =)
Just after I left this comment I've listened to various version, also Gigliola Cinquetti's one, I must say she did a grteat job on this sng=) Thank you!
This song is called `yekhali na troika` - we rode the troika..-it was also known as `The long Road` i have the song on my channel sung by `Neposedi` and translated into English
Many years ago, Vietnamese sing this song, "Million of scarlet roses" or Kalinka... My parents and everyone - who were born in 1950s, always favorites this song. In some midnights, I've listend this melody by guitar in somewhere - softly and gently.
Whenever listening this song, I often think about the past, the memory, the love (and something I dont know how to speak in English ^^' )
The melody is Russian, but the song was not translated, an American Gene Raskin wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" this is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" which means "By a long road" or "along a long road" The song in Russian Дорогой длинною, was written by Boris Fomin in the early 1900's with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.
Mary Hopkin had the biggest and best known hit with this song.
thanks very much on this information my friend... i grew up with this song at the core of my heart, it being my parents top favorite song,..i did not know it up until just now...paceebe mnogo...for sharing the details... now i will like it even more.
I don't understand Russian, but i don't have to to understand the beauty of this song.
I am glad i found it. Every American whom is familiar with Mary Hopkins's version should see and hear this. It's a view into the Russian soul in less than 4 minutes.
You're right, but there's many more beautifull russian songs- better than this one (that song is about a Gypsies). I recomend "Oy to ne vecher", for example :)
This was fantistic! We have this melody in a song called "Those Were the Days". Is it the same in Russian? Thank you somuch for posting this! I love themusic of other cultures but Ithink Russian songs are my favorite!!!

Arguably, one of the most internationally popular songs in the world, this song in Russian is superb:
ехали на тройке с бубенцами,
А вдали мелькали огоньки...
Эх, когда бы мне теперь за вами,
Душу бы развеять от тоски!
It is also popular in Brazil and many other countries.

Great performance!
Awesome!!
Yes, this is a melody of Russian an troika bells well fit this song.
How about Mary Hopkin?
I wonder if Mary had not her northern taste, the TWTD did not make a great world-wide hit...
Thanks a lot for this.
Regards,
Tommy
This is my 79th TWTD in my playlist.

Those were the days was a rip off of this one :)
Gene Raskin just wrote English words to the Russian/Soviet tune.
Unfortunately, I don't know Russian (yet) so I can't help you as to the content of the video.
