@shootingstarisborn To paint a picture, say you hit a ball and it runs to, but stops short of, the boundary. You manage to run five - it's rare but it can happen.

The fielder gets there, picks up the ball, misjudges the return throw and it goes out to the other boundary for four. Why should you be penalised because of the other teams bad play?

No its only 7. They get three for the number they ran before the ball was fielded. Since the overthrows went to the boundary they get another four, and any other runs they get don't count. Just like when a batsmen hits a four they only get four and not any runs they ran while the ball was on the way to the boundary. If the overthrow hadn't gone to th e boundary the extra runs would have counted
