Tony has that special touch of unmatched class we all can try to learn and play but it wont be good as he playes its beyond serious just listen to them G runs that says it all
@justinge999 Tony suffers from dysphonia, which makes him sound like this when he talks. He didn't smoke any, and his voice is out of whack because of years of singing, epecially when the mid-90's rolled around. Lay off of him. He is a very nice man and he would never disrespect you.
Notice Tony's economy of motion: He keeps his fingers very close to the fretboard and his hand is sure and steady and yet relaxed in order to be fluid over each position.
I actually had a private lesson that included this lick from Tony around the time DGQ (David Grisman Quintet) was awaiting the release of their very first album back in early '70's.( I am dating myself here) I believe he credited Sam Bush with this lick. Very cool stuff! He always makes everything he does look so easy. That singing voice was once of the best baritones ever.
OH man...poor Mr. Rice. He's got himself the larengitus(or however you spell that). Man, he's a great guitar picker ain't he? Shooweee...I learned one of his signature licks, but it don't compare to the picking of Mr. Rice. Takes years of practice to play like that...
@bigdreamer66 I just stopped playing metal after several years into it, just cos one day i picked up an acoustic, start jamming, and than i saw what these guys can do with their guitars. It ended up with me buying a brand new acoustic and start training my ass on this stuff. To be honest, they say metal it's difficult, and it's true, but i think this stuff is even harder than that!!! Although i'm fucking love with this music!!!
@BlackZar84 Good for you. You only live once and to be stuck listening to one genre of ANY type of music is a waste. Try some John Scofield next or even some Pierre Bensusan and Tommy Emmanuel. Keep practicing your ass off.
You can hear the relationships between Bluegrass and the Blues in Tony's playing and that's nice, most people try to cover it up, or exaggerate it TOO much.
Steve Kaufman performs traditional bluegrass to its finest. Tony rice has been bluegrass in the making as a personallity finding its deepest depths on the guitar. And as for Sutton....most of his licks are Tony Rice licks or are derived from them. He admits that himself.
music is not a contest you moron. Tony Rice IS better than Kaufman but so what? Kaufman is pure teccnique while Rice is the real deal but Kaufman is better than you that's for sure.
HA! your in your musical infancy son!, only immature, unexperienced whelps like you would "compare" art. Art is subjective you stupid fuck! what sounds like dogshit to you might be the fucking holy grail to another. Its not a competition, its what you feel and gain from it, and in the process help enrich others lives. FUCK YOU for even saying anything about whos better than who, HOW MANY MILLION ALBUMS HAVE YOU EVER SOLD YOU POMPOUS COCKSUCKER LOL
Wow dude, it's so obvious that you are a total idiot. I bet you get your ass kicked on the street all the time so you have to say trash like you do in the internet to make yourself feel big. STFU punk.
@SkankHermit Is it really necessary to use that kind of language. Any truth about your comment leaves one to think of you as compleate moron. You can get your point accross without making a blithering idiot of yourselfbut " I digress"
Toney Rice....fake it....NO WAY MAN! He's the best on the flattop hands down. Even Brian Sutton uses Tony Rice technique in all his picking. Get real dude!
I remember seeing and hearing Tony drop that "Nine Pound Hammer." That's the voice that will go with me to the grave. What power! What class!
God gives and God takes away. We have to be thankful for the giving and bear up during the taking. Thanks Tony for two of the best hours that I have ever lived. 1985? Loretta Heights College, Denver
they are so many lessons Tony give to us,and all your commentary demands more...i'll use this place to thank's him once again about his work to show every flatpicker where he can go,if he will...
i found out since this post that his is afflicted with a disease that is not life threatening but one that has resulted in the dramatic change in his voice that you hear here. it's especially sad because tony is not only a master guitarist but a great bluegrass singer. anyway, we're lucky to have him just picking the way he does.
I heard about his voice 4 or 5 years ago and really didn't believe it, until now. The Guy who told me was a really good Flatpicker and I thought he was telling me because he was jealous, I hate that Loved to hear Tony Sing
As I understand it, Tony's voice has been more or less like it is here since the mid-1990's. I hadn't known that was the case either but a well-known musician I know is good friends with Tony. The scary thing is that I've heard he's still pretty much a chain smoker which isn't helping his vocal chords. It's a real shame because Tony was a great singer.
I was fortunate to attend a guitar workshop with Tony's brother Wyatt a few years back and I find it sad that Wyatt has the same chain-smoking habit as Tony. We took many breaks during the workshop in order for Wyatt to step out and smoke.
Wow! I haven't heard Tony talk in years! As raspy as he sounds now, I didn't even know he had a voice at all anymore. At least he can still talk. Truly one of the all-time greatest guitar players!

Tony is great, but Steve Kaufman is greater. And to say Brian Sutton is inferior to Tony is like saying Earl Scruggs is inferior to Grandpa Jones.
