Faith Birol needs sacking like the bankers don,t know how much he gets paid but a 6 year old on google could do better. An assumption is a proposition that is taken for granted ,IEA 100% out.i think weve had conventional peak oil and he,s still waiting for it in 2020
...What makes you think if there is a WW, some nutty country is not going to use nuclear weapons and then there is a counterattack until there is nothing left but ashes...perhaps one that is never cited as having used it on people, like the US...
lets be real here, the way the world is going, there will always be war and very possibly a third world war thats going to affect everyone not based on ideology like in the previous World War but over resources. Were already doing that right now in Iraq over oil and as the worlds environment continues to worsen, so will the basic resources we take for granted. Just ask yourself, how many lives have to die for a barrel of oil these days?
If history teaches us anything it's that we've always used technology to solve our problems. World population was supposed to peak 200 years ago with dire famines and an apocalyptic dawn, but then we got better at farming and now can support more people. I'm sure in the next 50 years or so we'll find ways around these problems like we've always done. Or we go extinct. Either way....I'll take my chances. Better to live and die than to not have lived at all.
@Icix1 We didn't"get better at farming", we found oil and natural gas. Now we are totally dependent don these things and much of the worlds agricultural land is depleted and is little more than dirt (as opposed to soil) which acts as a sponge for petrol-chemical fertilizers. The real problem is the debt we have racked up, it can't be serviced without an ever growing resource base.
The take away from this: we're screwed in the short run and likely in the long run too as regards energy. Tar sands are no solution--too much energy needs to be expended to extract. No way around that. Forget about that.
Tar sands are just the opposite to a solution(I just bought a book called "Stupid to the last drop : how Alberta is bringing environmental Armageddon to Canada (and doesn't seem to care)")
We need an energy revolution. Problem is: there are so much entrenched interests (like oil, car, coal industry, oil exporting countries) invested in the status quo. We need powerful social movements to confront them.

Hah! SatanicCod must not believe in extinction. Even humans will go extinct. How ironic if we do it to ourselves.

Exactly, it seems we're always being told that the end is right around the corner. Things change, but we adapt and survive.

Can't agree more. I just can't wait to see nuclear power take over in the 21st century.
We will survive, we always do.
