They don't tell you how anyone can tell the current state of the magnetic field and I bet few know how. It can be done by anyone in less than 1 second without any thought or tools. Seems no-one is capable of un-biased thinking these days which traps you into ignorance. The answer is so obvious and it's right in front of you and you see it but yet you don't. I'll give you the answer but you won't understand. People are brainwashed beyond reason. The answer is the sun. What is different about it?

@docatomics It will have no effect on most magnetic media. Hell you can stick a speaker magnet on top of a hDD these days and it has no effect. Magnetic fields are all prone to the inverse square rule. Sure the earth's magnetosphere is more powerful than a speaker magnet, but it's also much much much closer. Any little peice of metal near a compass skews it. inverse square at work. You people haven't clue of what you speak.

~this process is a tad more involved than turning your speaker magnet over on top of a slightly shield HHD, think Carrington Effect of Sept 1 , 1859 and extend it out over a period of several centuries , when you done corelating these historical events, perhaps you will have a clue as to reality.
