I have a better idea for encoding the piece during the final trick. Use the direction of the handle to decide color (toward brian = white, toward Edwin = black). Then split the board into 5 sections, the 4 corners and the middle (much like the same trick done with cards).

@heroclix0rz crap, 6 pieces. I can't count. Well, splitting the board into 6 wouldn't be hard either. The whole idea being to reduce ambiguity.

@heroclix0rz I think your idea would be more obvious for onlookers to figure out. Orienting  only the handle and always placing the mug in the middle is much more subtle.
