It sounds likely to me - though not certain, of course - that the effect of the experiment on the people profiled in this series was to present a set of realistic visual images which gave form to some aspect of each person's psyche - personal hopes, anxieties, a need for recognition or importance, a sense of purpose, etc. It's a fascinating and thought-provoking series, and I am glad to have watched Part 2. (I found Part 2 first, & have to go back to Part 1.)
