@justintimeforclass i think adventure 2 is a bit harder than this actually, but both games have their challenging parts to them. I think the Sonic "final battle with Eggman" is pretty tough at first, just have to learn the trick to it though.

Man, my favorite thing to do In this game was to play as Knuckles, and go to that one temple place where everyone there Is a girl. I would climb to the very top and jump off, then glide around forever. I would always try to get on top of those barrier walls :D

I'm guessing that is done to prevent players from abusing the emerald for an easy end to a speed run. If the time wasn't padded, time attacking would kinda be ruined on this level, as people would keep resetting the story to bring about the emerald and thus better times.
