  • if there IS an equivalent video that talks about double bass does ANYONE know what it is?

  • was his foot playing all heel-down singles eg 24:45 or is he using some kind of toe-heel?

  • R.I.P Joe!

  • Nice and great, to see you in good health. But all these "pots" are too loud for me, too loud for the people around. I want to make rhthms without so much loudness... so l seized the roland octapads, the yamaha multipads, drum-pads, things like that, to play in standing position. Always sitting, thats too late in life for me... Wan´t be fixed on the chair. But I appreciate much the information and lesson, thank you, keep on swinging -

  • @gmrios check out Bernard Purdie as well.

  • Jingle Bells is realy GOOD)

  • I will never be the same groovestix. Thank you very much for posting this and help making me a better musician. Joe is my new guru.

  • Just, just so matter-of-fact.

"Well, now that the advertising bullshit is out of the way."

  • what do you mean YOU people?

  • This is a no nonsense or bullshit approach to playing and it works

  • A curious question. Why wasn't video #3 ever made? Oh, and thank you very much for posting 1 and 2. They've great teaching methods from whom I consider to be the best Jazz drummer of his time. : )

  • This is a lost art

  • why is this only coming out of my left ear, is this mono

  • One guy doesn't know what a mole skin is

  • Best tutorial vid ever , thanks for posting.

  • This is definitely worth studying.

  • I wish there were teachers half this cool and encouraging because most drummer's egos are in the way of their knowledge. Joe was so amazing!

  • 41:20 he plays Jingle Bells on his snare

  • @d36williams ..effen brilliant ..!!

  • @Brinemusic That was hilarious :)))

  • Dang. Joe Morello was a badass.

  • Oh wow i love getting schooled by old peope! R.I.P. Grandmaster Joe

  • @slowdeathbygrindcore, I own this on video cassette

  • my right side of the brain assimilated that knowledge very well :P

  • I think Joe's style of playing is my favourite amongst the Jazz greats...not as explosive as Buddy or Bellson, but just so natural and sooo cool!! And even in his 60's & 70's he's still got it !

  • Met him in San Juan Puerto Rico in 1968 at Casa Margarida he went to do a 2 days master classes and clinics and it was fantastic as always ..great and clear in every ways...RIP

  • i liked it immediately when my eyes dropped opened when i saw a traditional cross over at 1:20. i'm in marching band, and listen to metal, and this is something even I can appreciate....

  • if you click the dislike button, youtube inmediatly gets your account banned

  • He's like a Mafia Boss in this. lol.. Great guy

  • @Dectheboner Joe suffered from partial vision from birth. I presume that has something to do with the shades

  • @Nanuuk65251 No the way he talks and looks. Kinds has the looks

  • He was absolutely incredible

  • thanks for upload this video!!!

  • RIP One of the most important drummers in the World!!!

    Master!!!

  • What a hero!

  • thank you so much for uploading this vid.

  • Any idea what I'm doing wrong? My trad stick wants to slide forward even though I hold it properly and I don't squeeze and release the grip - it remains constant. Also, it makes the inside of my elbow sore...??

  • @Gretsche87 if your stick moves along your hand and you feel pain, your not doing it correctly it should be a very natural and pain free idea. try by first holding the stick balancing on your hand in mid air and once the stick can stand without falling to either side that is a basic fulcrum of rotation for the stick and from there hit the pad/drum and see what feels the most comfortable whether up or down the length of stick, jojo mayers secrets for the modern drummer talks about the very issue

  • @AROBcyprus

I have Jojo's DVD; It's awesome. What bothers my elbow is just the rotary motion that the wrist makes (like turning a key). It's like it pulls or aggravates the muscle or tendon around the elbow? I think I fixed the sliding issue though.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Thanks for posting this.....the comment that cracked me up was, "how cute"

"this doesn't record well at all, i wouldn't waste my time"

  • Thanks for posting this.....

  • The best left-hand I've ever seen. Thank you Joe. May you rest in peace.

  • haha! "left my muscles in my other coat"

  • best Drummer of Jazz

  • Rip Big Joe....always be with us ....

  • extra!!!

  • I love at 38:30 when he plays phenominal buzz rolls in matched grip he says, "I don't play it well this way". 99.9% of drummers would die to be able to play them as cleanly as that.

  • @DetroitDoc ..to sat the least

  • Every drummer should watch and study this video over and over. No matter what style you play, this is the technique to play it all. Period.

  • @MrDrummerboy79 sure, i agree - but where's the foot technique video?

  • @queenmcsleaze Well this is a hand technique video. In Joe's second video "Around the Kit" he discusses bass drum and hi-hat foot technique, however it's certainly not a modern day discussion on double bass drumming, heels up vs heels down, etc. Joe used and advocated using to his students a solid footboard bass pedal that's essentially always played heels down using that natural approach, and not many drummers today are going to play using that technique, but it can be very effective.

  • @MrDrummerboy79 absolutely. this is a hand video. in my honest opinion however, his second video does NOT feature bass drum instruction. sure he mentions a couple pointers and refers to people using double bass setups and indeed the 'solid heel' pedal but you notice he ISNT advocating heel firmly down because (like Weckl) he believes it's like locking your wrist on the snare and not using arms and fingers...in fact, he seems to think you should use a heel up motion but lowdown...flatfoot?

  • @queenmcsleaze Well if you are looking for double bass drum technique instruction, Joe isn't the guy to be studying. I studied with Joe for years and he advocated a heel down approach to play the bass drum with a solid footboard pedal. Playing heel down with a solid footboard pedal does not lock your technique up, it does just the opposite and lets your heel come up naturally with the footboard while you play a bass note. But study the modern double bass guys for bass drum.
