Nice and great, to see you in good health. But all these "pots" are too loud for me, too loud for the people around. I want to make rhthms without so much loudness... so l seized the roland octapads, the yamaha multipads, drum-pads, things like that, to play in standing position. Always sitting, thats too late in life for me... Wan´t be fixed on the chair. But I appreciate much the information and lesson, thank you, keep on swinging -
A curious question. Why wasn't video #3 ever made? Oh, and thank you very much for posting 1 and 2. They've great teaching methods from whom I consider to be the best Jazz drummer of his time. : )
I think Joe's style of playing is my favourite amongst the Jazz greats...not as explosive as Buddy or Bellson, but just so natural and sooo cool!! And even in his 60's & 70's he's still got it !
Met him in San Juan Puerto Rico in 1968 at Casa Margarida he went to do a 2 days master classes and clinics and it was fantastic as always ..great and clear in every ways...RIP
i liked it immediately when my eyes dropped opened when i saw a traditional cross over at 1:20. i'm in marching band, and listen to metal, and this is something even I can appreciate....
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? My trad stick wants to slide forward even though I hold it properly and I don't squeeze and release the grip - it remains constant. Also, it makes the inside of my elbow sore...??
@Gretsche87 if your stick moves along your hand and you feel pain, your not doing it correctly it should be a very natural and pain free idea. try by first holding the stick balancing on your hand in mid air and once the stick can stand without falling to either side that is a basic fulcrum of rotation for the stick and from there hit the pad/drum and see what feels the most comfortable whether up or down the length of stick, jojo mayers secrets for the modern drummer talks about the very issue
I have Jojo's DVD; It's awesome. What bothers my elbow is just the rotary motion that the wrist makes (like turning a key). It's like it pulls or aggravates the muscle or tendon around the elbow? I think I fixed the sliding issue though.
I love at 38:30 when he plays phenominal buzz rolls in matched grip he says, "I don't play it well this way". 99.9% of drummers would die to be able to play them as cleanly as that.
@queenmcsleaze Well this is a hand technique video. In Joe's second video "Around the Kit" he discusses bass drum and hi-hat foot technique, however it's certainly not a modern day discussion on double bass drumming, heels up vs heels down, etc. Joe used and advocated using to his students a solid footboard bass pedal that's essentially always played heels down using that natural approach, and not many drummers today are going to play using that technique, but it can be very effective.
@MrDrummerboy79 absolutely. this is a hand video. in my honest opinion however, his second video does NOT feature bass drum instruction. sure he mentions a couple pointers and refers to people using double bass setups and indeed the 'solid heel' pedal but you notice he ISNT advocating heel firmly down because (like Weckl) he believes it's like locking your wrist on the snare and not using arms and fingers...in fact, he seems to think you should use a heel up motion but lowdown...flatfoot?
@queenmcsleaze Well if you are looking for double bass drum technique instruction, Joe isn't the guy to be studying. I studied with Joe for years and he advocated a heel down approach to play the bass drum with a solid footboard pedal. Playing heel down with a solid footboard pedal does not lock your technique up, it does just the opposite and lets your heel come up naturally with the footboard while you play a bass note. But study the modern double bass guys for bass drum.
if there IS an equivalent video that talks about double bass does ANYONE know what it is?

was his foot playing all heel-down singles eg 24:45 or is he using some kind of toe-heel?
