(Cont.) Animation IS drawings on paper, but so many animators (like Pixar and Miyazaki) concern themselves as not conveying art, but conveying story through art beyond the real. Yet, they bear a sort of realism (I remember how Studio Ghibli films portray human and animalistic movements so realistically that you feel subtle physical or mental struggles of characters) in the established world. Their characters are exisitable through the care of their script (yes, animated movies have those).
Animation, so many possibilities... The issue is that many believe we relate better to live-action because... we see actual humans working to be invested in their characters on screen. Some argue that animation is simply art, drawings, pretentious expression with only a storyline to show of the art which is one of the biggest lies I've heard about cinema.
Well said. I'm a strong believer in believing that the reason why most teens/adults think animation is just for kids is because it's, well, it's animation, it's not real. They much rather dumb themselves down with "reality" shows like jersey shore.
@SnowflakeSymphony Right! Classy is the way to go. That's the catch - finding the line between classy and trashy. it's definitely about mentality - so many adults dumb things down for kids nowadays, we can't even handle anything rougher than rounded edges on kiddy tables. -_-
No one wants to handle the crazy zealots who think kids should live in a bubble. I was going to blab about animation history or whatever, but, seeing as you're an animation major too, it's not necessary.
@heyheypachuco The funny thing about Japanese animation is that in Japan, it's harder to get a live action done than here, and here it's the opposite. But the fact that we came from such films as Winsor Mckay's Sinking of the Lusitania (and I should know more examples, but I don't), I don't see why animation is so limited now, though. I mean, there are some fantastic animators out there, and treat animation as an extension of fine art, but still people treat the medium as very low-brow.
@heyheypachuco I mean, you'll get animators like Jan Svankmajer and, you know, it surprises me that the collaboration between Salvador Dali and Disney is not more well-known (seeing how famous they both are)... But you'll get people thinking the computer does all the work in animation these days (which just burns me up) and it's just not respected. But keep in mind, animation has only been around for a century-- people are still getting used to it...
@xRaineDropsx True! Which is ridiculous. Parents nowadays are putting kids in a soft-padded world - kids can handle more than some adults nowadays give them credit for.
@heyheypachuco that's true adults think their kids are weaker minded then they were at that age cause "our lives were tough" news flash people kidscanhandle what you throw at them aslong as it's in manageable doses, kids are supremely adaptable, they aren't fragile minded whimps
I really enjoyed this, listening to your arguments and the examples you put together. What is the creepy film you showed us with the blonde girl? I hadn't seen that one before. A film that would have been interesting to include in your video is Watership Down, a great film, but terrifying for kids that I have asked about it. I am doing a paper on Disney's Tarzan + Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda, how the celebrity cast in Kung Fu Panda attracted adults 2 the film and the comedy/kung fu/animation 4 kids
The 'creepy' example is Cool World, a Ralph Bakshi film. A lot of people like his work, but I'm not a fan. Even if I were, I'd probably still dislike Cool World.
I've heard of Watership Down, I've been meaning to check it out....oooh, let me know how your paper goes! :)
@MrPunchDrunk1 Oh, definitely. That was part of my point on finding the line between bold and creepy - sometimes it just goes wayyyy too far. Hence, hentai. >___<
First of all, I agree with you! Animation is for everyone! Kids, adults, EVERYONE! But yes, adults can enjoy it too! People should feel this way.
Second, a good animated movie you could have mentioned is Watership Down, which is a great movie that's for adults & tells a bold story. I love it!
Third, I think that day you mentioned already happened! When I went to see Fantastic Mr. Fox, the audience was made up of adults & only adults. How do you feel about this? Does it make you happy?
@DanielLaux429 Sorry for the late reply! And I LOVE that Fantastic Mr. Fox had a primarily adult audience :D It definitely makes me happy - it's a stride for the animation world, if nothing else. The one thing that bothers me - and this is really just nitpicking on my part - is that it was probably the star power behind it that made it so accessible to adults. You know, George Clooney in the cast and all that. I just wish animation weren't (almost) solely using celebrity voices. But ah well!
think adults don't give kids enough credit for what they can and can't handle in an animated movie.
And sorry for my rant, but I'm just tired of seeing people classify all animated movies as kid movies and then complaining how even after they have been dumbed down that they are still not kid appropriate. -.-
Personally if you ask me, I think movies should just be made the way they are intended without trying to target a specific group, and let the people themselves decide if they like it or not.
themes in them which really don't make them kids movies at all in my opinion. I actually love watching movies with animals as the main characters and such, but I hate it when they are targeted only for kids, and it seems all the themes of real life and such are removed because parents are always complaining about how even kids movies today are not appropriate for their kids, when they grew up on movies that were a lot darker, yet that's what made them great. Which also I want to point out I
Thank you for saying this. I agree COMPLETELY. I'm a huge animation fan (I actually would love to go into the animation field in my future), and I am so sick of seeing adults turn up their noses at animated movies because they are for kids and such. To me, animation is a work of art, and I don't understand is why something that is a work of art is made so that only kids can enjoy it and not adults as well. I personally love Pixar and older animated movies because they are for kids yet have adult
To be honest animations were really made for adults which is why from 1960s to 2000 cartoons had alot of adult theme jokes and violence. But then it grabbed young kids from the 2000s which were raised by pussy ass parents complained about all the content which started this plague of crappy kid shows. I want to make a adult like anime series when I'm older but with all the pussy ass parents I'm scared I might get cancelled in the first episode.
@Daxter609 Yeah, don't you hate that? From the late nineties onward, you couldn't get away with anything. Animation got progressively more fluffy. *sigh*
@heyheypachuco Even in the 30s and stuff cartoons couldn't get away with stuff like drug use their are some banned episodes of old cartoons like Betty Boop, Looney Tunes , Flinstones and etc. But it guess they lightnend up a little with Spawn a 90s cartoon that show was doing single adult related content but got tooken down because soccer moms started seeing it.
Don't worry, with the anime-fan community growing among young adults in the western world, there will be many people, like myself, who will be inspired to take animation to adult audiences. Anime is at its peak in popularity now, so I have a feeling this generation will produce minds more willing to market and accept adult-oriented animated films.
@Rakansen1990 Oh, definitely! And I heard there's going to be a live-action remake of Akira involving Leonardo Dicaprio. I feel as though that could either be really good or really bad.

It was a well-done movie that was essentially a crime drama with bits of conspiracy mixed in, though I had to stop watching because I personally didn't like where the story was going. Others might really enjoy it, and it can be easily found on youtube since it has. . .weird copyrights.
More on subject, I completely agree with you. More animated movies should be made with adults in mind.
Have you heard of Jack Zipes? He writes mostly about 'children's literature' but I feel that it's relevant here. If you ever read any of the original fairy tales that disney took on you might find this whole area where they took children's stories and made them even more sweetened because the real versions weren't suitable for kids. We're constantly separating things into adult and child, which makes little sense when we live in the same world.
@littlelostsheep Haven't heard of him, but I'd love to check it out.
Yes, it's definitely interesting to read the original fairy tales Disney reworks into movies! Some of them are terribly depressing particularly the original Little Mermaid. A powerful story nonetheless, though.
Very well put. There's definitely a market potential for adult-themed animation. The Matrix Proved it, the Riddick series ( a portion of it, anyway), Dante's Inferno, Halo, it's out there, even if they they do focus on a key market, the fans of the original source. Hopefully US studios will come to a point where animation can mean so much more to them in the long run. For one, I'm sure they'd rather replace a voice than to replace an actor that's filmed scenes already.
I agree ten times over. As an inspiring animator that mixes anime with Western style, I wish I could see a western cartoon that has the depth and boldness of anime.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you think I sound smart :) I thought I was just a bit of a ramblin' fool after a while.
